EA: Demise of console gaming 'very premature'

COO Peter Moore says even though mobile is growing, gamers continue to show enthusiasm for core titles.

The demise of traditional console gaming is not a reality the industry faces, according to Electronic Arts chief operating officer Peter Moore. Speaking with Bloomberg TV, Moore said even though the mobile space has grown, gamers still want core titles they can play on a big screen.

No Caption Provided

"The console business is still a core part of our business; it's the majority of our business. The demise of console gaming is very premature as far as we're concerned," Moore said.

"We still have thousands of people focused on developing current-generation Xbox 360 and PS3 games, as well as people focused now on the next generation when that finally arrives," he added. "And so, people still want core games. People want to sit back in their living rooms, take advantage of their HD TVs, and and play fully immersive games like [Battlefield 4]."

Also during the interview, Moore said he expects EA's digital sales--which includes mobile, downloadable content, and subscriptions--to possibly overtake its traditional packaged goods business by 2015.

"In two years we could be looking at the tipping point where digital becomes bigger than the traditional core,” Moore said.

Moore is believed to be a leading candidate to take over as the next EA CEO. He would not comment on this conjecture, but praised John Riccitiello for leaving the company in "tremendous shape." Moore said one thing the new EA CEO needs to do is execute.

"We did not executive to the level that we needed to in [fiscal year 2013] and [John Riccitiello] took accountability for that. And I think the future CEO will focus on pure execution because all the ingredients are there; we have the world's best developers, we have a tremendous publishing pipeline, and we've made the hard decisions about our platform.

Peter Moore has been there throughout EA's failure and I have no evidence that his presence at EA is helping anything. Why hasn't an official offline version of SimCity been announced yet? EA leaders are going to have to make it happen, even if it means firing Maxis lead developers. I suggest firing EA management one at a time until this gets fixed. Does Peter have what it takes to make EA do the 180 degree turn around it needs? John may be assuming "blame" but this means nothing. EA's failure is probably not John's fault unless CEO's are now being held responsible for game design decisions. Maxis leadership needs adjustment IMHO. There is nothing more important than a video game company getting back to its roots: producing FUN games.

Can't you do this already with just about almost all gaming platforms including PC's and mobile devices, it is called [insert port type] to HDMI, most phones and tablets of the last 2-4 years support it. Not trying to degrade the value of the console here, just stating that the console is not the only device that plugs into a TV lol.

Demise of console gaming is very premature...unless your console starts with "Wii".

"we have the world's best developers" that's a brave statement.... I mean, they have some great devs, but the world's best? nope.

and I'm not an EA hater - I play and love lots of games published by them. I just don't believe for one second that they are the best in the world.... far, far from it.

They probably do have some of the best developers. However, they are reigned in by marketing and management. Imagine the amazing games EA could put out if they gave their develepment teams more creative licence and let them take greater risks.

Yeah, no doubt they have a lot of great programmers and people, they bought enough companies and even though many key people from ORigin, Maxis, Bioware (etc.) fled after getting eaten by the EA-Monster there are still a lot of them around.
But you can only be as good as you're allowed to. At EA you're not allowed to do anything but produce games as fast as possible. It's unlike, say, Rockstar who take time and release a game when it's done and they say it's good. EA doesn't care, they are only after the money, good quarter reports and satisfying the share-holders.

Actually, they do get their numbers from up their asses. All data, is an estimate. And VGChartz has only 2-3% of the North American market as a sample

"One of the most unexpected results in the recent NPD charts for May was the appearance of the poorly reviewed Iron Man game for PlayStation 2 in the Top 10 of the charts, with 130,000 copies sold.

Thinking about it carefully, with the movie rocketing to unexpected success during the month, it would make sense that the game would sell well. But it's not the kind of game that you're likely to estimate in the Top 10 - and indeed VGChartz did not, estimating 53,000 units in sales, according to VGChartz staffers.

But what's surprising is that Iron Man for PlayStation 2 has been adjusted in its official VGChartz page so that its first four weeks of sales (encompassing May) add up to 111,000 units. "

http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2008/06/analysis_what_vgchartz_does_and.php#more

So, guess what? You made a total, utter, complete fool of yourself. Congratulations. Next time I kill a enemy in DayZ, I'll happily laugh at you.

I reckon at some point, consoles will be replaced by in TV cloud based services which won't be too bad in my opinion as the internet gets more reliable.

@fillup0 Shulman's prediction for 2062: Communication occurs through touch, voice, and even thought. Global warming and rising sea levels; U.S. power concentrated by wealthy under a near-totalitarian government.

I'll ask this guy he guessed that as a third grader in 1962.

For me mobile gaming is complete sh*t.

What i seek from console(or PC) gaming is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from what i seek in mobile gaming and i'm pretty sure that it's the same for most gamers in the world.

Imo only morons would put the two things together.....

@MalakTawus Totally agree, it's not that the mobile games are bad(and they are) it's the fact that they are not what games should be.. Unlike PC and Consoles games they lack substance and Story also it set's bad precedent for gamers like me whom thinks the industry could do without the Mobile and Facebook crap games that are out they're along with half the devices that run the games.. I swear this country is turning into the movie plot of Idiocracy....

Console gaming have became a double-edged sword to me. I don't see a point anymore in spending like 500$ in a system plus 30, 40$ games per game (pray to get good used ones) if, after 7 to 8 years, this system "gets replaced" by a "new one" of the same product line (PS2, PS3...), thus making you go through the "buying ordeal" again...

However, if you can afford a super duper computer, apparently there's no reason to buy system anymore. You just fill it with "your magic" and happy gaming everly after, right? The thing is I'm neither ready or to get this amazing computer or giving up on systems, although I have zero enthusiasm for the so-called next gen but I still enjoy VERY MUCH playing games on TV, while spending hours in the computer makes really tired.

Just my gamer point of view instead of a "money brain" one.

You're not very good at making a point. You call it a "double-edged sword" but only list pseudo negatives (which really weren't negatives, just you whining about spending any amount of money).

And I hate to break it to you but you don't just buy a super duper PC and own it forever. PC rigs become obsolete 3 times faster than a console. 7-8 years for a console is a long time buddy. I don't know anyone with a PC gaming rig that is 8 years old, let alone still playing todays games on it. Where you spend 300-500 on a console...you'll spend over a 1000 easy on a rig...and you're not done. After a year, if you're lucky, you'll have to spend more on upgrades like memory. And lets not even mention that you CANT trade PC games in like you can console games towards the purchase of a new game.

5 year old rig, playing FC3 and BS:I on high to very high settings. PC gaming has become a doodle, now that the industry doesn't dare pushing hardware anymore because of console limitations.

Heck, a huge number of PC gamers even play on laptops these days....that wasn't even considered an OPTION 10 years ago.

Back then you may have had a point (and even then a disputable one)...but not now.

Besides that, for once i agree with a statement coming form some1 at EA. People will want to keep playing console and PC games on big screens and high quality sound in the comfort of their homes.

Assuming you got a total amount of 10 million people. five million of those people are already established gamers who either own a console or gaming PC, The other five million are people who own a portable device like an android phone who commute every day by public transportation and decides to play Tetris for 25 minutes pass the time.

The real difference between already established gamers is they are willing to spend 12-24 video games a year rather a casual mainstream gamer will only get 1-3. Nintendo Wii was targeted to casual gaming market, look at out well that have turned out for them. That console was a lame duck four years later.

@Hayden Roberts PC elitist much? At the time of release you can't get something far more powerful for less then the ps4 or nextbox, if the prices do indeed turn out to be 400-500 dollars, it will not be possible. Maybe after a few years but not at time of release.

Yes i understood it.

@ "COO Peter Moore says even though mobile is growing, gamers continue to show enthusiasm for core titles."

I just kinda responded to that.
Because most rich bald men can really be that stupid and think one might prefer more mobile approach so you can game while being in trafficlights. Some people really are that stupid who don't know much about gaming.
I know this Moore knows core gaming has not shown any big drop.

It's just the way he expressed that.
I mean shoudn't it be pretty obvious that core (read: console/pc) gaming is going to beat mobile gaming anyday.

@Gravity_Slave @Nefarious13 The problem isn't the existence of shooters. The problem is the overindulgence in shooters.

You can only do so much with a FPS game, and it is only one small segment of what has already been shown to be possible in gaming. Yet this one genre makes up a ridiculous proportion of the high-budget games which are being produced. Too much of any good thing can be bad.

EA and publishers like them are too scared to try anything new, because it's not, in their mind, absolutely guaranteed to sell; so they are constantly falling back on the easy, no-risk FPS. As anyone in any entertainment industry will tell you, when you become afraid to innovate and diversify, you are in decline and no longer moving forward. EA is in trouble, and it's the games that are the problem. They need leadership that are game industry veterans, not from Pepsi and Sara Lee.

@Gravity_Slave @AlwaysRunning My point was that big-budget games are lacking variety. If you don't like gory shooters and online gaming--a large portion of gamers do not--then you're out of luck. The obsessive focus on this one genre IS holding the industry back. That's not saying Bioshock Infinate "sucks," there are simply too many of these games, too often, and it's ruining the market through oversaturation. Activision did this with their music games: There were too many, too often, and people got tired of them because of it. Have your high-quality Bioshocks, Call of Dutys and whatever else; but can't we stop with the endless wannabes that could be doing something different and satisfying a different part of the gamer population. Even EA is starting to learn this, from their Medal of Honor flop.

*golf clap*

Brilliant. Fact is, just because you don't like competitive shooters, doesn't mean they can't be innovative. Have you even bothered to play Bioshock Infinite? No, of course not.

Seems to me you're just another EA conspiracy nut who is afraid to pick up a CoD game because he's not social competitive or articulate. And FYI; you can over indulge in anything...that just means its good.
