EA details free Origin games as apology for SimCity launch disaster

List of games being given away by EA includes Battlefield 3 and Dead Space 3.

EA has detailed the list of Origin games it will offer to customers affected by the disastrous launch of SimCity.

No Caption Provided

All copies of SimCity registered on Origin before March 25 will give applicable customers a chance to pick one free game from the following list: Battlefield 3, Bejeweled 3, Dead Space 3, Mass Effect 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Plants vs. Zombies, and SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition.

The games provided, with the exception of Sim City 4, are all standard edition.

EA will roll out the redemption process across its three territories in waves, starting in North America by 5pm PDT on Wednesday March 20, before reaching Europe by March 21, and then Asia and South America before the end of March 22.

Games have to be claimed by 11:59 PDT on March 30.

"Our SimCity Mayors are incredibly important to the team at Maxis," said a statement on the EA website. "We sincerely apologise for the difficulties at launch and hope to make it up to you with a free PC game download from Origin."

"Starting today," continued the apology, "every player that has activated their copy of SimCity will receive an email that will give directions on how to redeem this offer, and you can also find more information on our FAQ. We'll be opening up the redemption portal country-by-country so some of you may see it a little sooner than others."

"The portal will be live worldwide for everyone to select their game by March 22. We don't want any of you to miss out on your free game, so please note that you must register your copy of SimCity before March 25, 2013 at 11:59 PM PDT and you must claim your free game by March 30, 2013 at 11:59PM PDT.

"At Maxis, our studio values dictate that we innovate and create something that is quirky, complex and challenging. Sometimes this bites us in the butt, but our servers are green and we're seeing record numbers of players all online and having a great time.

"Here is the list of games that you will be able to choose from once you are able to redeem. It's a great list of games across the whole EA portfolio, so pick one and add it to your Origin library on us!:

"We're getting great feedback from our fans and know that many of you are having fun and exploring this whole new expression of SimCity," the developer continued. "We're humbled by your patience and passion for the game. Thanks for building something very special with us, together."

As much as I'd like a free copy of BF3 or DS3, I dislike Origin enough to stay completely away from this.

@cheamo I don't get why people hate origin, from my experience its just ea's version of steam hardly any difference. I have never had problems with it.

@Aaronp2k @cheamo It's because it isn't Steam. Only reason why.

@SergioMX @Aaronp2k @cheamo I understood the context perfectly. Don't get me wrong I get fanboy-ism it is everywhere but I know a handful of people that hate steam aswell as origin and would rather just buy their games retail. Personally I love steam because of the convenience of digital downloads, I have used origin and I find it very similar to steam and do not get what all this hate is about

@Aaronp2k @SergioMX @cheamo cool, learn to see the context in my comment. But to put it more clearly, people are Steam fanboys and if any other service tries to compete, they will simply hate it.

Buy one shitty game, and get a game that's MUCH cheaper than that one for "free".

whoever would choose bejeweled 3 instead of ME3 or BF3 in beyond me...DS3 is the best offer price-wise you can get from this, since it is a fairly recent game would still cost quite a penny...

@thorn3000 A large chunk of the audience for SimCity games isn't interested in shooting things. They're left with some pretty crappy choices here. They should have offered some of 'The Sims' games and add-ons.

Its like I said last week, at least EA are offering a free game. somebody argued they would be old games nobody plays but the fact they are offering battlefield 3, dead space 3 (only recently came out), NFS most wanted (came out near the holidays last year) proves that EA are not so bad as people make them out to be. I believe EA do make some awful decisions, but so do activision when they recycle every cod game and just add a few more weapons, and so do betheseda when they dumb down content from their successful franchises, and blizzard of course ruined diablo with diablo 3 (or so people say, I personally never cared for diablo anyway). EA aren't out to piss gamers off, that is the last thing they want. They try to look after their consumers because after all consumers are their primary source of income. That is why they offer some of the best sports games, state of the art fps games like battlefield 3, state of the art horror games like dead space (hard to come across scary horror games lately, but dead space pulls it off well). I think people really need to give EA a break, yeah maybe they are a little bit greedy but name one other company that is not greedy (and valve does not count because imo their games are mediocre compared to most gaming companies titles).

oh yeah and their brilliant mass effect sci-fi franchise, although the 3rd game was a bit disappointing story wise it made up for it with brilliant gameplay.

@Aaronp2k "their brilliant mass effect sci-fi franchise" Mass Effect was made by Bioware and published by Microsoft. EA had nothing to do with the creation of Mass Effect. The franchise may be owned by EA, but it is Bioware's creation.

@Blackarrow1020 @Aaronp2k but they own the franchise, like I said. I don't care what you thought it sounded like, what I said was correct not my fault you overlook things when I type I type in the literal sense so you should have taken what I said literally. If I thought ea thought of the idea I would have said "EA thought up mass effect" simple as that. Stop trying to justify accusing me of being incorrect because you were out of order and you know it.

@Aaronp2k Your original comment makes it sound like EA thought of the idea and that i was their original IP. You shouldn't credit EA with the franchise, all they did was buy it.

I wonder how many will choose SimCity 4. The other games are good as well, but not good replacements if you can't play the game or is disappointed by it and want a REAL SimCity.

How about just taking off the stupid DRM so people can just play the game they bought. Oh wait that would be too simple for EA.

EA giving something to the people for free? Whoa, it's revolution =P

Now they should go back to the way they were back in the ps2 days and make good games for a change. I'd love a new Need for Speed Underground and maybe a proper Medal of Honor.

This was very informative. I didn't realize Plants vs. Zombies was published by EA. Normally stuff they publish on the App store have big bold EA logo in the bottom, quickly alerting me to what they publish. Luckily I got it for free. Game is now deleted. I'm going to have to keep researching my games a little further from here on out.

@trdrstv sound it funny as well, but well bejeweled 3 is there mostly for underaged people, underaged accounts are forbidden access to all online functions so for ex. in BF3 you can only play campaign...that is why they had to choose a game that has no online functions and pegi 3 or whatever...

@trdrstv Funny cause Ive put almost 700hrs on BF3. Thats probably more than what youll play in your entire lifetime of this new sim city. Yes, its pretty equal of value IMO.

looking at the list of "free games" i can't help but noticing that most of these games haven't done as good as they should have done. they also rely heavily on on-line services, multi player and micro-transactions and dlc's ...looking for more customers, ea? wait, was this publicity stun???

@JulyAeon LOL....and I mean LOL...BF3 has not done good?...ME3 has not done good? you sir need to read a more about statistics...the only games who have done better last year and are not on the list are Fifa 13 and perhaps, and I only say perhaps, Madden 13, that's all...besides Ea Sports games those are the best games EA can offer from they portfolio......as to relying on DLCs neither DS3 or ME3 rely that heavily on any microtransactions or DLCs as they are mostly singleplayer experiences...BF3 granted needs Premium DLCs, then again there are no microtransactions there...

@thorn3000 @JulyAeon bf3 does not need premium dlcs, you can change filter to only look for original bf3 maps and play matches that way. and tbh I enjoyed bf3 without the dlc as it was, but seeing some of the stuff the dlc offers I am actually very tempted to get them now.

@Aaronp2k @thorn3000 @JulyAeon or you can buy Premium edition bundle from any retailer (almost the same price as Premium alone), use the premium code and give the original BF3 included with it to a friend (or share the price with the friend), best value

Being compensated for time they lost, like they had nothing better to do but play sim city anyway haha. its not like their life suddenly went on hold because of ea. But unfortunately you are correct, because that is how sad people are nowadays :).
