EA Exec Ponders What's Coming After Xbox One, PS4, Wii U

"What is the next console?"

What's coming after the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U? It's too early to know for sure, but this topic is one that publisher Electronic Arts is already thinking about and taking steps to prepare for. Speaking at the UBS Global Technology Conference in San Francisco today, Jorgensen was asked to talk about some subjects that "keep EA up at night." One of these, he said, is "What is the next console?"

No Caption Provided

"We believe that deep, immersive gaming is something that consumers are always going to want to do," Jorgensen said. "The question becomes, 'What's the method in which they do that?' We don't believe that everyone is going to go to casual gaming only and leave deep immersive gaming that they have. The trend has never shown that. I think the question becomes, 'What happens to the next console? What is the next console?' 'Who produces the next console?'"

Jorgesen went on to say that traditional consoles are somewhat "odd" in the consumer technology world. Unlike a smartphone that you upgrade every couple years, the same console that sits under your TV today will likely be supported for a decade into the future. Jorgensen said one solution for the future could be a multi-functional PC-like system.

"At the end of the day, a console is a high-powered PC that sits in your living room," he said. "And in fact, it's an odd piece of technology. There are very few pieces of technology out there that sit somewhere for seven or eight years; the typewriter may have been the last one, maybe the Polycom. And so the question becomes, 'Is there something that's more of a PC-like device that sits in your house that does multiple things?' It may stream movies, or music, and also allow you to play console games."

"If it's not Microsoft and Sony, it might be Apple and Google or someone else that wants to go after gaming" -- Jorgensen

He went on to say that there are already "lots of interesting" developments in this area, also suggesting that Microsoft and Sony may one day face genuine competition in the console space from the likes of Apple and/or Google, among others.

"Microsoft's obviously doing a lot with Windows today that might lead to a path they're going to do down," Jorgensen said. "Apple and Apple TV is leading to a path that would include gaming. I think the thing to remember is a couple of key components. People understand there is a large market [for console gaming]; it's a very engaged market; and it's a market, by the way, that's kind of accepted the 70/30 revenue split [between publishers and developers] that's worked in music and books and others. And all of that implies that if it's not Microsoft and Sony, it might be Apple and Google or someone else that wants to go after gaming. Our strategy is be in a position that we can handle a transition from any platform."

Jorgensen said EA is preparing for such a transition by reducing the number of different game engines it uses across its various studios and games. At one time, EA studios used 26 different game engines, which could be problematic for developers moving between teams or sharing ideas with other studios. But now, there are just two: Frostbite and Ignite. In the future, Jorgensen said he hopes Frostbite will power every EA game, a move that would "protect us if there is a shift to another platform because we can move everything all together at once versus have to move 26 different engines."

Clueless but not shoeless. How do these execs earn their titles? The cellphone market is a completely different beast. Phones are subsidized through the carrier. Costs are then passed on to the consumer. Dispersed over a 24 month period. What gamer in their right mind is going to pay 79-89 bucks a month to own a console? Not including purchasing games, EA micro-transactions, etc. Only PC gamers have those kind of deep pockets.

I am hoping consoles go the way of PC, tablet and smartphone markets. You pay more for better specs. Have the Xbox standard, a mid range Xbox and than an elite Xbox for optimal specs. The market is now used to this thanks to the phone markets so I dont believe it would confuse people at all.

@koryc13: Yeah and then have each game have a different graphic options setting with 2 settings each. The cheap one plays medium settings, mid range high and expensive top of line console spec ultra settings. Then have two settings per console. One for performance (can drop to low settings to get 60 fps) and one to max out as much as possible (low end console will max out at medium 30 fps or can go low to 60 fps) That's really what's needed to further gaming development.

I think the next-generation of console's need to rival mid-range gaming PCs. In both price and performance.

As for Xbox ... I'd like to see them continue with this "Backwards Compatibility" thing. Have the console called Xbox Infinite and be able to play any game from the original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on 1 console. It's hardware needs to surpass or at least compete with the next PlayStation's hardware. Kinect should be optional and the price should also be competitive.

What he means is "What is a new system that we can have them buy every year or two years. So we can make more money off of them. I know consoles are sold at a loss in the beggining to control shelf life. But if they were turned over every one to two years. They could really start to make a profit on them initially.

Can't help but feel this EA executive's comments are only self serving.

I think a console is more than just a piece of hardware in the living room -- and it certainly is not defined to just being a PC. I think it takes more than just third party support to make a great console. Great consoles always have and always will have great exclusive content and innovative hardware. They generally will support a type of gameplay that PC gaming generally does not or cannot provide, like local cooperative multiplayer or motion control for example.

Otherwise it is not console gaming; it is PC gaming.

Of course EA would like to turn the console market into cookie-cutter systems with similar hardware and controllers so he can continue to port unfinished and glitchy EA games to multiple cookie-cutter platforms. But that is not going to happen.

The reason that so many gamers are disappointed with this gen of consoles is because the xb1 and the Ps4 largely follow this approach and offer relatively little to the gaming community that cannot be had by virtue of just gaming on your home PC.

In contrast I hold that the Wii U actually has been a great console this generation with tons of quality exclusives and truly innovative gameplay with a focus on family-friendly multiplayer. I hold that gamers who went the Wii U route for console gaming and a PC for third party games have had little to complain about this gen.

But of course, that does not fit the EA model to develop games that can only be ported to multiple innovative systems. They want it cheaper, easier and quicker. Hence, I think this is a self serving statement. Of course a developer like EA would like the future of console gaming and future console products to be nothing more innovative than your run-of-the-mill blu ray player and television; makes it much easier for EA to take a lazy approach to porting and profits. Of course they would like to see more cookie-cutter consoles from as many console manufacturers as possible and do away with the innovation that is Nintendo, but I just don't see that happening.

If anything, I am predicting a HUGE comeback for the Wii U this season. For many reasons, but none more so than the basic fact that PS4 and Xbox One players in general are not happy with their console content in general because they can just get it on PC.

@lonesamurai1: Don't make the automatic leap from standard pc's to gaming pc's. Consoles at launch are generally high-powered pc's but mid range gaming rigs. The statement still rings true.

@lonesamurai1: A Ps4 runs games on a much higher level than the computer of most, it's only gamers and people who have jobs that have stronger computers, and in reality, only the minority of gamers have stronger computers while most pc gamers don't do ultra settings.

@Mirimon78: You are talking about those who don't game with a PC but own one. PC gamers in general usually have cards from the 700 or 900 Nvidia line or from something equivalent from the AMD branch.

Why even bring up basic computers people don't use for gaming? That would be like bringing up a sedan against a luxury racing vehicle.

@UnbornCorpser: no, I am speaking of pc gamers, not people that simply own a pc.

Only 6.81% of pc gamers have the graphics cards required to run vr. That is 93.19% of pc gamers who DO NOT have graphics cards in the price range you are talking about....

Supporting data for this statement can be found via metrics held by media distribution services such as steam. And don't try telling me most pc gamers don't use steam, or things like it.

@UnbornCorpser: it didn't, I simply pointed out that yhe difference in price point is also the line drawn for vr on pc. The majority of pc gamers still don't play on anything more than a 200 buck gpu. Even were I to build a comparable rig at the same price point, it would still be higjer than the average pc gamer gpu.

@beastmode: Very naive to think. Apple has lots of money to throw around at devs if they ever get serious - they would easily get support. Unlike a lot of commenters, Devs/Publishers won't stay loyal to typical consoles companies because they are not fanboys, they just follow the money.

@nintendians: The Xbox is already Windows 10 as of this week.

Engines don't really have much influence on the look of a game. The release of multiple similar looking games has more to do with a lack of originality in most productions and trying to jump on whatever artistic trend looks successful. You can easily have a pastel Mario game and a dirt smeared Call of Duty exercise from the same underlying engine.

What is next for consoles?

I for see Microsoft making a PC/Console hybrid, or they will just make a PC, and make their games just for windows OS like they tried back in the day. This is a good idea since this allows the PC, and console market blend together creating a larger customer base. I think Microsoft having a handful of exclusive games that a re very popular would allow this hybrid gaming system. PC gamers already want Halo on PC, so why not just make a hybrid next go around? I do not see Sony doing this nor do I feel Sony needs too. Historically Sony/PS has had a great amount of exclusive games that are unique to that system. Most of them being RPG, or a action game/movie like Uncharted. Nintendo well those guys know what they are doing, and will not mess with the formula to much. Apple/Google/Amazon god only knows what kind of hipster new thing that some spread sheet says is trendy. I for one am for a PC/Console hybrid, and I do believe M$ will do it snce the XB1 is already heading that way with Keyboard/Mouse on the way. Windows 10 Ui, and streaming to PC win10 devices. They will also step all over their own Dicks by trying to force cloud BS down our throats. Either way I am enjoying Fallout 4 too much to give a rats ass!

Actually a console is an under-powered PC that sits in your living room, but whatever. PC's can sit in your living room too.

@randloev: In the overall scale of computers, modern consoles are pretty powerful, especially at their price point. Sure they're weaker than a gaming rig, but gaming rigs are only a fraction of the PC market.

@Andy639_basic: Actually they aren't powerful at all compared to the 900 cards from Nvidia (can't say on AMD since I don't use their products) and the i7s you can get.

Around 60% of the people I have come across on steam have better builds than me, mine is only 2 years old, which would indicate a good portion have beasty rigs.

Hilariously enough my 2 year old computer is stronger than the current gen and it doesn't even have a high tier GPU.

@UnbornCorpser: Well yeah, they're nothing to write RockPaperShotgun about. I just meant that consoles are on the higher end of power when you factor in all the different PCs out there, many of which aren't used for gaming at all. It's a matter of what scale you're using; Steam users obviously are going to select for higher-end systems than the general public.

@Andy639_basic: That's the whole point though you shouldn't factor in those who don't game with their PC. That only skews the numbers as their machine wouldn't be used anyways towards the gaming scene.

That whole statement from them is to make sure they keep console people seduced by their machines making them think they are on tier with high end rigs. Basic point is my PC is old and needs to be replaced but it is still stronger than the current gen consoles. PC gamers' rigs are normally well above the current gen but if bringing in those who don't game with their PCs make your side of the argument more relevant then go for it.

@UnbornCorpser: That's kind of conspiratorial, don't you think? Console makers take a cut of the sales of EA's console games, while anything EA sells through Origin, they get a cut of it, AND get to keep the profits of their own games, so EA has no incentive to talk up consoles compared to PC.

Really if I have an argument it's just that while the PCMasterRace types like Golrish are quick to point out that the current gen consoles are much weaker than decent gaming rigs, that isn't really relevant to Jorgenson's point: that current and likely all future gaming consoles are just essentially cost-efficient PCs with a custom specification and OS.

@Andy639_basic: Cost-efficient? You do realize they are so far behind PC specs by now that they will never catch up with a reasonable cost stapled onto them. But it doesn't really matter the masses of gaming are usually with consoles and their drove like thinking dictates the gaming market. Being able to plug in play sure it'll work for those who want that but not those who want more.

FO4 being made the way it has kind of shows it was held back for consoles (they can barely even do 30fps with the game). By the time the next gen comes they will more than likely be slightly stronger than my PC right now but up-to-date PC parts will be ever improving. Eventually consoles will reach PC standards, once we reach the technological max for our eyes to perceive, but video game companies will still make games based on consoles first.

I suppose that is my resentment towards consoles but business is business. I just wonder how far, graphical wise, games would be right now if PC was the only platform.

@UnbornCorpser:

I doubt graphics would be as far along as you think because in absence of an affordable and easy option like a console, many people wouldn't bother with graphically intensive games and there'd be less incentive to make them. It's absurd to resent consoles even if they do sometimes result in inferior PC versions. That's most often the fault of publishers farming out PC versions to shoddy companies.

Consoles serve a market function. As you say, business is business, and consoles are what allowed video games to become a big business in the first place. Hell, before Steam there was a time when PC gaming was thought to be dying outside of the MMO genre.

Personally, while I love consoles, I think something more LIKE the steam machines is where things are going to go soon.

Graphics technology is moving too fast these days for consoles to be supported for a near decade. So there is going to have to be some kind of upgrad-ability, ala modular PC parts.

I highly doubt that the steam machine itself with be the answer with it using linux. Rather companies like Sony will have to create their own OS that branches out more than the current offering on their consoles like PS3 & 4.

I think it's a good thing personally, if I could just buy a Playstation/Xbox video card from Gamestop I'd be one hell of a happy camper.
