EA on Battlefield 4/SimCity issues -- "When you push innovation, you miss other things"

CEO Andrew Wilson also says "building games is very hard" and confirms that EA has "changed our process."

Electronic Arts has again responded to the widespread server issues that plagued the launches of SimCity and Battlefield 4, but this time, the comments come straight from the top. During a question-and-answer session held over Twitter recently, EA CEO Andrew Wilson was asked what EA has learned from the technical troubles surrounding those games.

"Building games is very hard… when you push innovation, you miss other things," Wilson responded. "We've changed our process."

Wilson did not elaborate on how, specifically, EA has adjusted its process to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

Just last week, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said part of the reason why Battlefield 4 suffered at launch was due to the "complexity" of the game (64-player online, tablet support), as well as the fact that developer DICE was working with new consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Before that, EA chief creative officer defended Battlefield 4's rocky launch, saying "I think there was a lot of noise about the game, but some of that is a function of your surface area. The more customers you have, the more noise becomes available."

Overall, Battlefield 4 has been an "exceedingly successful" title from a sales and gameplay perspective, Hilleman said. In addition, the Battlefield franchise has not been damaged at all by the technical troubles of Battlefield 4, Jorgensen said previously.

As for SimCity, technical woes beset the game at launch, but these issues have since been corrected. An offline mode is coming to SimCity through its next patch.

Yeah because releasing a game that is bug free or least only having small bugs isn't important at all.

Still waiting for EA to pull their finger out and give us this offline patch... They say they want to deliver a polished product before release but really, what difference is it gonna make when the game is already tarnished in reputation... Just give us the offline mode and be on your way, stop making shitty games or at least turning amazing games like SimCity into a crock of shit...

Is anyone else getting tired of the same old PR bullshit these executives spew out? These guys would make any publicist in Hollywood proud.

I'd be willing to give EA more respect (and possibly my money) if they would just for once pretend that we are not all uninformed imbeciles. Just come clean and say "sorry" to all the fans of these very old, very established IP's. Have some dignity, some humility. People understand that. What they don't understand is double talk, unapologetic executives, and their absolute inability to act like they can make mistakes.

They completely fucked up both of those games and they refuse to take any sort of responsibility for it. Trying to be innovative? Give me a break...

<< LINK REMOVED >> At LEAST the games are "trying" something new unlike Activision which just copy pasta everything from their old games. But for BF4 its been almost 5 months and the game is still a broken mess and yet they are getting ready to release the 3rd DLC. There are only 5 DLCs for BF4 and 3 will have been released in the game's first 6 months. BF3 didn't get the 2nd DLC until about 8 months after its launch.

Battlefield hasn't been damaged at all? it most certainly has, i sold my game for a start because i was just getting sick and tired of the glitches.

Battlefield 4 was and still is a broken mess, a complete shambles and they should feel bad about it.

The question for Sim City is not "Why were there servers issues?" The question has always been "Why are there servers?" It should be a single install, disconnected experience with the side option of multiplayer if that is what EA decided to feature.

Here we have why this company continues to receive worst of the year. I don't understand. When you get that kind of thing, wouldn't you open your eyes a little bit? Sims 4 is going to be a big deal. If that game doesn't meet people's standards I'm pretty sure a lot will stop buying from EA all together. I sure will. Not many games I care for from this company.

Sim City was a disaster for it's release day. NO servers on-line for it's big coming out party, leading to more hatred for a franchise that was already on life support after Sim City Societies. EA should have NOT put that always on-line DRM in that game! Spore laid the ground work for this DRM being put in and now they are going to take it out via patch to save the sinking ship from taking on any more water and going the was of the Command & Conquer franchise, another bad decision when they put the SAME on-line requirement for C&C 4 for the very simular reasons! Sim City also had NO map generator for real world locations to be generated like in SC4 and to add insult to injury for SC fans very small maps and NO huge spanning maps like in SC4's maps. SC is essentally all but DEAD for SC fans now, even I as an hardcore SC fan since SC 2000 back when I had a Macintosh Performa 575, SC 2000 was the game I played a lot before I got Civilization II MGE for my Sony Vaio PCV RS-410 PC back in the day. Bottom line EA do not overreact to Spore's Piracy rates and put that dracoDRM that is always on-line checks in game because you are scared of losing a few dollars to dishonest people that would have never have bought the game in the first place next time! Gamers buy games, we are not renting them game for 60$!

Battlefield 4 on the other hand is just having teething problems because of it's heavy requirements for consoles to manage even the PS4 and Xbone for it's game play with lots of bots and players on the same maps. The new consoles are just like Laptops for your TV because they have the same hardware that is in high end laptops from ASUS and Sony 2 to 3 years ago. Even the PC has problems running this game, because it has a resolution scaler like in MOH:WF and certain emulators like in PCSX2 and Dolphin that require massive amounts of VRAM and a CPU OC'ed to 4.5 GHz to run at max without hiccups. This is a game that will go into the category of games that are going to be used as suites on websites like Anandtech, Tech Report, and Tom's Hardware that are benching new cutting edge CPUs and GPUs like Total War: Rome II, Crysis 1, and Crysis 3 in the nVidia vs. ATi GPU and Intel vs. AMD CPU wars. The game is just to demanding for when it was released in November, because the PC hardware was not cheap for mid range PC's gamers that build their rigs for under 1750$ like for one example an AMD R9 280X with 6GB of VRAM and an Intel i5-4670K Haswell series CPU for one. Give this title another 2-3 years and the PC hardware will eat this game up and ask for seconds just like Battlefield 3, even the dreaded title that is Crysis 1 is slowly being ate up by the new hardware from AMD and nVidia/Intel.

<< LINK REMOVED >> what does that have to do with all the gameplay issues in BF4? or networking issues? Or the shotty netcode, or the lack of standard features that are stripped away only to be sold to you in expansions, like basic game modes and the ability to squad up? What dooes anything you said in your post have to do with anything I just posted?

This still doesn't explain why the PC version was soo shitty. 64 players and creating games on PC were nothing new for you guys...been doing it for years, and yet the release of the game was terrible. As for Simcity, if you didnt force players to be online in the first place...would of never had this issue.

Also there was nothing really innovative at all with either of these games. They were unfinished, pushed out the window to make a profit and we all know it.

So I'm trying to join game and it says "DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE LATEST BROWSER PLUGIN TO PLAY THE GAME." So I download it and install it and try joining the server again but it says "DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE LATEST BROWSER PLUGIN TO PLAY THE GAME." I repeat and it loops. But its okay. This is what EA overlooked. The sacrifice for innovation.

"Innovation"? Really EA, with every new comment you lose more and more money. People, like myself, have come to realize that you just don't understand what the consumer wants. Screw fancy graphics and overpriced DLC, just give us a working game that we can enjoy for years to come.

they have innovated....in the level of bullshit they can sell. almost revolutionary. when you choose profits over the quality of a product and the satisfaction of the customer that's when your company should be burned down to the ground by arsonists. fortunately for you EA, you'll probably burn the company down yourselves from the inside out

Screw 'innovation.' How about you just stick with the same old formula of not releasing the game until its finished?

As for SimCity, it was NEVER BROKEN, so you NEVER needed to fix it.

Just reading this article raises my blood pressure.

I wouldn't have bothered with the paying EA for a new version of SimCity anyway, not after they took down SimCity Social and the rest of their Facebook games branch. Honestly, pulling the plug on the Facebook SimCity, which honestly was functioning quite well, is not going to entice players to drop money on a broken new title. They're just gonna stop supporting the company altogether and advise others to do the same.

@billybell89 That's silly. SE is doing fine. The FF team might be struggling, but they are still publishing great titles. Look at Bravely Default, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Kingdom Hearts, etc... And if Murdered: Soul Suspect turns out to be good, that's another potential franchise.

I would include Thief or Hitman, but that may prove to be too controversial

If it is that hard to make a good game, SimCity should have been beta tested thoroughly and not for some 15 mins. Hadn't brought BF4 because not interested in it.
