EA Origin's Next Free Game Is From 1995

Download a free copy of Crusader: No Remorse today on PC.

Electronic Arts is currently giving away copies of 1995 game Crusader: No Remorse as part of the "On the House" promotion for Origin. The game normally sells for $5, but you can get it free today.

EA's On the House games don't come with any strings attached, but there is no saying when the deal will expire, so you're encouraged to act quickly if you want to pick up a free copy.

Crusader: No Remorse was developed by Origin Systems and originally launched in August 1995. You play as a "Silencer," an elite enforcer who works for the World Economic Consortium, but later joins the rebellion. "Now, your former employers better watch their backs because you're coming after them with all the firepower at your command," reads a line from the game's description.

This is an old game, so your current computer shouldn't have any issue running it. But just in case you're wondering, here are the minimum system requirements:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Windows XP or Windows Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
  • 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended)
  • 2 GB HDD
  • Mouse, keyboard

EA launched the On the House promotion in March with Dead Space. Other past freebies have included Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Dragon Age: Origins, and Bejeweled 3, among others. EA says the goal of the On the House promotion is to show off Origin and "provide a great gaming experience" to players. The publisher also runs Game Time, a promotion where gamers can play titles, usually newer ones, for free for a period of time--often 48 hours.

Are you serious? This game ran on my 486 DX2/66mhz with 8MB RAM, and it needs 1.8 ghz with half a GB of RAM? It also had no 3D card in it (they didn't exist at the time). And 2GB HDD? It was on like 7 floppy disks. What have they done with the game to make it require such dramatic requirements?

The game could NEVER fit 7 floppies. It used an entire CD-ROM, since it had lots of FMV scenes and voiced dialogues.

As for the requirements, it uses Dosbox emulator, which is quite demanding. And don't worry: the game will not take up 2 GB, just something like 800 MB (including the emulator).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I had the floppy disk version. Back then not everyone had a CD-ROM so a lot of games came in two versions, CD version with audio or disk version without.

In any case, I don't know why they need 2GB HDD space. These drives didn't exist back then. Dosbox is a tiny app, it can't make up the difference.

I'm sure you are confusing this game with another one. This game was NEVER released on floppies. Only on CD. I know some games used to have two versions, but this one NEVER came out on floppies. Aren't you confusing it with Little Big Adventure? This one had a floppy version, and had some similarities (namely the isometric view and the SVGA graphics).

And it does not require 2 GB, just 700 MB or so. They just put the 2 GB as a random requirement, I think. The game's installation will not use 2 GB.

I got it just now - that's 3 free games I've got from them now. I feel dirty. The dirt doesn't wash off... I scrub and scrub and scrub... so much blood, so much guilt...

The game is awesome, but do yourself a favor and get it on GoG or simply download the DosBox version from an abandonware site.

That way you won't have to deal with Origin DRM and you can get "Crusader: No Regret" as well while you're at it.

If there'll ever be a sequel I hope it's not developed and published by EA but an independent developer instead that self-publishes it because we all know that everything EA touches turnes into sh*t.

That has to be one of the most conceited and biased article titles I've seen. You could have said "EA Origin's Next Free Game Is A Good Old Classic", or "EA Origin's Next Free Game Scored 8.4 On Gamespot". Hell, the game was Action Game of the Year on CGW.

The writers on Gamespot should take a reality check. From MacShea's drivel and VanOrd's pretentiousness, to Haywald's Nintendo fan-boyism and the lazyness that doomed the PC review of DR:3 to a 3 score just because the nobody that did it is a self-righteous whiner, the general quality of the articles here is decaying fast.

Don't think I've forgotten the article about a 19 year old trashing a motorcycle because of the XBox. Come on.

@spectralmerc Horse and carriage was a brilliant invention, scoring a 9.4 on transportation spot. How about your local electronics store doing a "on the house" program giving everyone a free betamax player, a system that was considered superior at the time.

The writer of the article has a valid point, if you don't really want to give something away then dont. Stop pretending with these pathetic attempts to get people on your inferior drm system. The 0.0003% of the gamers still interested in "crusaders:no remorse" probably got it already on gog.

And then not stopping there but going on insulting the whole gamespot staff while your at it? What is wrong with you man? Really? I suggest that you take a long hard look at your life and focus on fixing what is wrong with it instead of acting it out like douchebag on the internet.

<< LINK REMOVED >> My life is perfectly fine, thank you. Not that it's any of your business.

And nobody is capable of giving me a valid reason on why Origin is so inferior. The only point they can give me is that is only EA games, but I don't think that makes the cut. It takes less memory than Steam, it has a better overlay and there is a refund policy that actually works. And even if the games are not bleeding edge, they still give away more free games than Steam. Giving away Dragon Age Origins and its entire DLC isn't a bad deal ever.

Don't get me wrong, I love Steam. But it's tiring to see this kind of poison always floating around. I like to think there is such thing as redemption and second chances, and given EA's past, I think they're on the right track. Granted, Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 3 were money-grab crap, but there's still Mass Effect and Dead Space 1 & 2. Mirror's Edge is great, Alice: Madness Returns is unique and I'm having fun with Titanfall.

But enough of the EA apology. I'm not a fanboy, and I don't want to sound like one, but that's just my gaming experience. Having said that, I do think I went out of line with the Gamespot staff remarks, and I'll take the chance to take them back, but I do think the general quality of the reviews and articles have decayed to give room to very biased opinions of what a game should be. It's okay for a reviewer to have their own views and tastes, but if you know a reviewer has strong conservative views, it's a big mistake to assign him a game like Dead Rising 3, knowing just how silly the game is (on purpose). Same with a writer that tints articles so much with incendiary opinions.

TL;DR: EA ain't so bad, sorry Gamespot staff, I apologize, but the articles are still downhill.

The strange thing is that it no longer says until what date it will be available for free. It just says "available for a limited time only".

@ojmstr It, along with it's Ultima cousin, was pretty much cutting edge engine-wise when it came out. You needed a hefty PC to even get it running halfway smoothly - and it was actually pretty damn good.

I like how the headline emphasizes the release date over the title. Guess I better respond accordingly:

OMG! Origin is so lame, giving away a 20 year old game. That just ruins my entire life. You don't see any free games that old on PSN or Xbox Live. Origin obviously hates gamers and needs to just go away. I'd be better off paying $5 for it.

How did I do? Lol.

Great classic, got it on GOG some time ago... The controls are a letdown, but if you manage (I did) to bind them to your gamepad with a program like Xpadder, it's a BLAST to play!

I remember this game being free back in the day as well. PC Gamer magazine's CD-ROM, I think, gave it away.

I used to have this game backin the 90s. You had to run it off DOS. I could never figure out how to run the thing. I followed every instruction to the letter.
