EA Revamping Star Wars Single-Player Game, Shutting Down Dead Space Dev Visceral

The Dead Space developer will shut down and see its Star Wars game overhauled.

Electronic Arts has announced some major news regarding one of its most anticipated upcoming games, as well as one of its oldest studios. EA revealed it will shut down Visceral Games, the studio responsible for the Dead Space series, among many other titles. Additionally, the single-player Star Wars game it had been working on will be overhauled and moved to a different EA studio, leaving a major name's future uncertain with the company.

"Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe," said Patrick Soderlund, executive VP of EA worldwide studios, in a post on EA's website. "In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design."

Now Playing: GS News Update: EA Shuts Down Visceral, Shifting Development On Its Star Wars Action-Adventure Game

No Caption Provided

The untitled project will now be developed by EA Vancouver, which had already been working on the game. Soderlund says it will "maintain the stunning visuals, authenticity in the Star Wars universe, and focus on bringing a Star Wars story to life. Importantly, we are shifting the game to be a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency, leaning into the capabilities of our Frostbite engine and reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore."

However, as an unfortunate side effect of this change, Soderlund said EA "will be ramping down and closing" Visceral. It doesn't sound as if its entire staff will be laid off, as EA is "the midst of shifting as many of the team as possible to other projects and teams at EA." But this still marks the end for Visceral as we know it.

Visceral has been around for the better part of two decades, starting out life as EA's Redwood Shores studio. Its name was changed to Visceral in 2009 following the release of the first Dead Space in 2008. (Subsequently, general manager Glen Schofield and COO Michael Condrey left for Activision, where they remain as the leaders of Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer Games.) Its catalog of games is extensive, covering everything from Tiger Woods golfing games to Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel. It also developed a number of licensed games, including those based on Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, and James Bond (such as the surprisingly good Everything or Nothing). With the Dead Space series seemingly put on ice, Visceral has spent its recent years working on Battlefield DLC and the spin-off Battlefield Hardline. An ex-Visceral staffer has subsequently spoken out about the performance of Dead Space 2 and EA's expectations for it.

Due to the changes the game is undergoing, it has been delayed. It had been due out in EA's 2019 fiscal year, which runs from April 2018 through March 2019. Soderlund said, "We're now looking at a new timeframe that we will announce in the future." He also added, "We look forward to answering more of your questions, and sharing more on our plans and timeline for this new Star Wars experience, in the months to come."

The Star Wars game Visceral had in development was being headed up by Uncharted veteran Amy Hennig. When she spoke about it last year, she said it may be "spiritually similar" to Uncharted but that it will also be its own thing. It's unclear how or if she is still involved.

Update: It seems Hennig may no longer be involved with the project. Contacted for comment about her status, an EA spokesperson told GameSpot, "[W]e're in discussions with Amy about her next move." It declined to share any additional information beyond that.

Greetings all.

Extremely unfortunate for Single Player RPG fans (like me), it seems that MMOs are the future of gaming. 5-10 years from now there might not be any more single player games. And as for EA they have had the exclusive gaming agreement with Star Wars for 4 YEARS and have produced only 1 console game in that time!!!!!!! One. Pathetic.

What a giant waste of my favorite franchise. Hopefully Star Wars learns to not sign any more 'Exclusive Contracts' (especially with EA).

Wishing all the best for the folks at Visceral.

Starwars the Old republic sucks and has turned me off to the Star wars genre. I loved all the Deadspace games and was really looking forward to playing Dead space 4 but I guess its the crappy Star Wars which I won't be playing. The biggest problem with SWTOR was money, money, money, pay , buy this buy that AFTER you paid full price for a game. Then the uneven levels of you the player and the AI's in the or the non player foes were always level 34 while you were a 25 or something to low to defeat them unless you bought something, I have hundreds of good in fact some very excellent games on steam like Alien: Isolation - EA never did one this good, and very few EA games. Looks like they are killing off all the good stuff and keeping the bad.

First 1313, now this. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but these were 2 games I was really looking forward to (especially because of Visceral's involvement on this one.) I was really hoping for another Dead Space game as well, preferably without EA's interference this time; the first two were great games.

I'll probably avoid this game out of principle now that EA has [once again] hijacked control from Visceral. RIP.

Dead Space was AMAZING. I just don't know what to think...this seems like EA's best studio besides Bioware, and they can it?!?

And they trash at least some of the work put in to that Star Wars game, by Amy Hennig no less?!?

So they give us a lame multiplayer game with a Star Wars skin...I mean honestly I don't care if you like it, but it's not for me (and then ruined by microtransactions anyway even if you were looking for a Star Wars skinned deathmatch game), and they can their actual real Star Wars game that by rights would probably be much better than the non-Lucas Star Wars movies...UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH.

And this after they announce no more Mass Effect?!? EA's apparentlytrying to make me not care about them at all.

It sounds like they're likely to turn it into a co-op or multi-player title which means it'll fit in with EA's other titles that don't have a proper campaign, ie Titanfall & Battlefront.

We need to vote with our wallets, Don't buy it, I haven't bought Battlefront but will buy Battlefront 2 as it has a campaign. It's the same with Titanfall, I only bought 1 because it was dirt cheap in a big sale and as expected apart from an hour when I bought it I've never played it since. Titanfall 2 has a decent campaign. I didn't bother with BF1 either because the so called campaign was a cop out with no depth or real story just a gimmicky style of play. I bet the so called players they've been taking feedback from are specifically co-op/multiplayer people anyway.

@nashathedog: EA Never learns, people voted with their Wallets against Mass Effect but did EA learned anything?
No, they are doing the exact same thing with bioware all over again. Dragon Age without Mike Laidlaw? Yeah don't think so.

This is bullshit but I guess it's the future of gaming. Less and less single player, story driven, rpgs. More mmorpgs and multiplayer crap for the stupid masses.

So they are going to turn it from potentially being one of the best Star wars rpgs ever, into an MT/loot crate ridden grinding cash cow. Bravo EA fucking bravo. Greedy shit bags.

@stev69: and Soderlund thinks we can't hear this ringing throughout his words.

Hopefully no one buys the game, EA crumbles but has the decency (doubtful then) to allow the studios to keep making games without their over bearing, game ruining rules, and the gaming world would be better for it.

Not happy.
I'm a single player and I find this game developing trend annoying and lazy. L-A-Z-Y.
It's hard to tell a story. A good story.
At this rate I see my self doing only retro-gaming in the future.

Having said that I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, while I cross my fingers.

I am sure this game was going to be a single player joy with 20-30 hours gameplay, but no, they need games that players can play for a "long time", which means it will either become a crappy MMORPG or have multiplayer content that will require micro transactions and such.

I can't recall when was the last time I played a really, really good game coming out under the banner of EA.

This does not sound good at all to me...I bet they're going to turn it into yet another godamn MMO or something...Ugh...Leave my story-based single-player Star Wars game alone dammit...I really hate EA...Also, if they actually do kick Amy Hennig, the brilliant creative mastermind behind the old Legacy of Kain series (my god those games were good) and Uncharted, off the team, then that would be the worst and dumbest decision ever, and I'd want to punch them in the face.

@J_P-: For the same reason that this will, mind you. EA's vice-grip ruined what Dead Space 3 would have been, had they not exerted their influence over the creative direction.

The folks at Visceral were already people you should have known about when they created Visceral. Dead Space was an immediate fan favorite as well as one of my personal favorite games of all time. 2 was even better. 3 was good. Not as good as the first two but still creepy and fun. What I'd like to know is why they shuttered the studio. Visceral was FULL of talent and ideas. They could have made a Dead Space 4 and I'd have bought it. 3 had the trademarks of EA all over it though. Run and gun sections, DLCs, micros, etc. It's sad when EA takes over a studio. It truly is. Because you can, quite literally, watch as all the greatness of that studio gets sucked out of it so EA can make more money. Sad. I hope the talent that put Visceral on the map is reborn into something great again. I'd love to see these devs strike out on their own again and make something awesome.

By overhauled, they mean full of microtransactions, DLCs, Loot Boxes and with a meaningless single player mode.

For real though, best of luck to Visceral Games's people. I hope you leave EA if you did not already and find better jobs on better companies. First Konami, now EA, F*** you two!

EA Vancouver is heading up the development of this new Star Wars game now. Considering that EA Vancouver is also responsible for all of the EA Sports games (NHL, FIFA, Madden, Need For Speed, etc.), they're probably going to turn this into some crummy Star Wars-themed multiplayer sports game.

So what happened was they focus tested it with teenagers and they said their favourite games were multiplayer and co-op games they could play with their friends. Something like Call of Duty. They also really liked loot boxes and progression rewards. Microtransactions were fun because mum doesn't realise how much money I'm spending. Also stories are dumb, if I wanted a story I'd read a book. And I don't read books.

Freakin sad, man. Overstrike -> Fuse was the warning shot across the bow. This is how EA treats games.

basically... Long story short... battlefield was set to be annualised after 3, in spite of BF's co-creators' wishes for it to remain a steady release, Im guessing balancing attachments, spawns, game modes all that shit just took too long, but EA went ahead anyway, and made BF4, in the credits you see Visceral Games, literally the whole team helped, with all the negativity bf4 received, and how hard they continued to work long into it's dlc releases, they also did BF Hardline, which commercially was a failiure because it was made, and designed to be a battlecod with ridiculous weapons, minimalist approach to graphics so it actually ran a stable 60 fps, but still failed in spite of all their hard work (I personally loved bfh), then they're time and resources is monopolised with a fucking star wars deal with disney, all of which off the back of a dead space 3 commercial failiure, it's no wonder really. ran into the ground literally by EA.

Just be straight EA. There is "no money" in a single player story so you need to make a big money maker into another piece of garbage multiplayer game. There are already too many mp games. As the first generation gets older, we do not have time to play hundred upon hundreds of hours in a mp game.

"Listening to gamers" my ass. Stop being greedy.

Ah man that is a bummer. As much as i like mp i still love a sp game with a killer story. I grew up on dark forces, xwing, jedi knight, that evolved in to kotor and those star wars games were so good due to the engaging story. Sure they were simple but engaging and that is what made them great. What ever it is it better be good, id take a fully fleshed out star wars galaxies game. I loved that game pre NGE
