EA Teases Next Battlefield Game, Saying It's Among Company's Most Ambitious Projects Ever

The next Battlefield game is "one of the most ambitious projects" in EA history.

EA's Battlefield 2042 was something of a disappointment for the company, but the franchise remains popular and is set to expand with a major new installment. During EA's latest earnings briefing, CEO Andrew Wilson said making the new Battlefield game is a top priority for EA right now, adding that the company has high hopes for the project.

"The community is energized by what our teams are doing and excited for what comes next. This is not just one of our top priorities, it is also one of the most ambitious projects in our history. We have brought together the very best team, coupled with the resources and technology they need, to deliver an epic Battlefield experience," he said.

Now Playing: The History Of Battlefield

This new Battlefield game, or "experience" as EA is calling it, is being made by the biggest Battlefield development team in franchise history. Teams at DICE, Motive, Criterion, and Ripple Effect are contributing to a "Battlefield universe" that will span both multiplayer and single-player experiences.

Earlier this year, it was reported the next Battlefield will have a free-to-play battle royale mode created by Ripple Effect. The next game in the FPS franchise won't arrive until 2025 at the earliest and still doesn't have an official name. Last August, Wilson said the next Battlefield would be a "reimagination" of the franchise.

EA shuttered Ridgeline Games earlier this year, which was working on a narrative experience for the franchise. Afterward, Halo co-creator and former Ridgeline studio head Marcus Lehto didn't have "anything positive to say" about EA.

During the earnings briefing this week, Wilson said the Battlefield franchise has surpassed 25 million players in the past 12 months, showing the ongoing strength of the series.

Despite Battlefield 2042's issues, the game finished 2021 as the No. 5 best-selling game in the US. EA and DICE supported the game with seven seasons' worth of expansion content. The game is now available on Xbox Game Pass.

Here we go again, it's like deja vu. They said the same thing about the last battlefield 2042. And that they had all the ea developers helping them. The problem is its not battlefield anymore it's missing what made battlefield great like bullet drop and destruction not cod physics. It plays like a big call of duty. I guess that what happens when the guy that took over battlefield was the guy that made the old modern warfare trilogy and the fact that you had pretty much every ea team had thier hands in the pot. How about just make it one ea developer team take your time on it get it right. Cause to me it looks like it's following the same steps as 2042. A battlefield game missing half it's features I do not want.

BF3 was really their last "BIG" game that had me hooked. BF4 hooked me for a while with the huge battlegrounds, but not as much as 3.

Everything after that has been "interesting" but very "meh."

Hopefully they are making a game that will bring back the IP to some heights again, but I remain skeptical. But glad to be proven wrong.

@RELeon: Exactly. I played the heck out of BF3 and BF4 lost me before the final DLCs came out (even though I think I preordered them). I'm not into a "reimagining", because that rarely goes well. Just go back to the formula of what worked. We don't need more bells and whistles or 500 guns with 1000 accessories to unlock.

Yeah, they got me with 4, which didn’t run well for a year and then 2042 which didn’t work for even longer……just wake me up 18 months after release, it may be decent by then

Andrew Wilson is a snake and chronic bullshitter. I don't trust anything he says. 2042 is a disaster that ruined any confidence in DICE/EA's ability to make a good BF these days. The OG talent left long ago and the incompetent noobs left behind have proven to be useless.

Translation: “Our most overpromised, half-baked and under delivered project ever.”

Overly ambitious has never been a good thing for EA. It actually needs to be simplified so they can focus on making a great game.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. They haven't made a good Battlefield since BF4. (After MANY patches even for that one to be good.)

Man, DICE needs to scale it down, not up. Stick to what they know and keep it small enough they can do a good and thorough job. That last Battlefield was a mess because it tried to do waaay to much and everything ended up feeling underbaked.

When EA say "ambitious", they mean it in the sense of trying to take you for every penny they can.
