Earthbound Sequel Mother 3 Might Finally Be Coming to the West

The 10-year-old RPG could at long last make it out of Japan.

Earthbound fans have agonized for the better part of a decade over the fact that the game's sequel, Mother 3, has never been officially released outside of Japan. That might finally be changing, according to multiple reports suggesting it will, at long last, be localized by Nintendo for international release.

Word of this recently spread on Reddit and Twitter, and now Eurogamer is independently reporting it as well. According to the report, Mother 3 will launch on Wii U's Virtual Console to celebrate the game's 10-year anniversary in Japan. (It was originally released there back in 2006 on Game Boy Advance.) We don't yet know whether it would only be coming to Europe, or North America as well.

Nintendo announced last year that it would be released on Virtual Console, but only in Japan. Fans remained hopeful it could also come to the rest of the world after the original Mother was released outside of Japan for the first time last year as Earthbound Beginnings. Previously, the only title to make it outside the country was Mother 2, known better to those in the West as Earthbound.

Despite only this single release prior to last year, the series has remained popular due to exposure through things like the Super Smash Bros. series. Meanwhile, a fan translation of Mother 3 has been available online for some time, with the team responsible for it even offering it to Nintendo for free.

Wish if they would take pre-orders for a physical GBA cartridge bundle for all 3 games much like how Gaijinworks is releasing a UMD of Smmon Night 5 for the PSP.

Looks like I was right. It is going to be released outside of Japan. This article might not say anything about an American release, but given the quality of these games, I can see it happening. I just wonder if they'll have an issue with the Mother 4 fan game after this. Earthbound/Mother can be a cash cow for Nintendo if done right.

I would like to see them remake the Mother trilogy with some hand-drawn stylized 2D visuals.

I'll believe it when it happens. I've foolishly gotten my hopes up for a US Release many times before thanks to alleged "leaks" which have repeatedly surfaced in the past only to have them dashed every time, so now nothing short of an actual release would convince me.

Seriously, even if NoA announced it, I still wouldn't believe it until it was released, because not even they can be trusted after their repeated "jokes" at the fanbase's expense regarding the game and a possible localization.

Good thing for flash cards/emulators. I played the English translation version of this on my GBA a long time ago.

If you have a computer and you into this type of games and you haven't played this game, then you nuts. This game has been playable through Computer Gameboy Emulators for a really long time.

With as big a cult following as Earthbound has, I would think anybody who was genuinely interested in playing Mother 3 would've already patched in the fan-translation and just played it that way. I certainly did. They're definitely going to make bank on it just because the cult following is so crazy that they'll buy the game to support the effort even though they've played it already.

It's a shame it didn't come out much later when Kickstarter was around. They would easily get the localization effort funded by the fans. Now that Kickstarter is a thing, I wish that's one thing they would use it for. There's a reason people do fan translations for games and there's a reason why people seek that kind of thing out. Put games that would never otherwise see the light of day outside of Japan up on fundraisers like that and let them fund translations... especially now that you don't even need physical releases anymore.

You know what this smells like? This smells like one of those things reporters aren't allowed report on directly, so they do it indirectly. "My article wasn't about X, it was about this third party potentially leaking something (about X)." You all saw this happen with Bethesda's embargo-embargo.

The original source for this rumor branch is Emily Rogers, who tweeted this:

Along with a since deleted tweet: "One last thing before I vanish: Don't be surprised if Nintendo celebrates a game's 10th anniversary this year...Just some food for thought."

And after those tweets, that's when Liam Robertson of Unseen64 fame basically tweeted out that the cat's out of the bag! Followed closely by Eurogamer reporting that those two along with their own source makes 3 independent sources for this rumor. So although it's still possible that it's untrue and both Liam Robertson of Unseen and Tom Philips of Eurogamer just jumped on the bandwagon, my money is that a lot of people know and just don't have many ways of breaking the news without breaking an NDA.

@Acillatem1993: It costs money, and these days nobody wants to do anything unless they make a huge profit. Just breaking even isn't enough anymore.
