EA's Black Panther Game Is Canceled, But It Has Three Marvel Games Still In Development
Marvel and EA's three-game deal is still on, according to the publisher.
EA has cancelled its upcoming Black Panther game and closed its development studio, Cliffhanger Games. But players still have at least three Marvel games to look forward to, according to the publisher.
Black Panther was part of a three-game deal between Marvel and EA. The other two titles included in the deal are the currently in-progress Iron Man game being developed by Motive Studio, and a third Marvel project that has yet to be revealed. But even with Black Panther canceled, the three-game deal is still in effect, according to statements provided to IGN by EA and Marvel.
"Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues," reads a memo obtained by IGN from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele.
"The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong," reads a second statement from an unnamed spokesperson. "Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel's Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios."
What comes after Iron Man is anyone's guess, but it's likely that the unnamed game currently in development will come next, as EA is presumably going back to the drawing board to decide what title will take the place of Black Panther.
The now-canceled Black Panther title would have seen players take on the role of Wakanda's protector in a single-player open-world game. Cliffhanger Games' recently displaced staff have been mourning the cancellation of the project on social media, with artist Karla Oritz describing the game as "Detailed, rich, [and] beautiful."
"It breaks my heart the world won't see it," she wrote on BlueSky. "It also breaks my heart to say goodbye to the team."
Black Panther is the third game EA has canceled this year (the other two were incubation projects at Respawn, at least one of which was a Titanfall game.)
