EB Games In Canada To Be Rebranded As GameStop By End Of Year

GameStop announced that it will be rebranding all of its EB Games stores in Canada to GameStop by the end of 2021.

GameStop has announced that it plans to rebrand all of its Canada-based EB Games stores to GameStop. Announced in a press release, all EB Games in Canada and the online store for EB Games will be swapped over to the GameStop name and brand by the end of the year, based on "feedback from our valued customers and stockholders."

GameStop acquired EB Games back in 2005, at which point EB Games stores in the U.S. and Europe were rebranded as GameStop. There are about 4,000 EB Games and GameStop stores across the world.

Now Playing: What The Heck Is Going On With GameStop

GameStop has been working on transforming its business and revitalizing it after several rough years. The company was on a downward trajectory in recent years, which was exacerbated by GameStop being forced to close retail stores due to the pandemic. However, early this year GameStop's stock price skyrocketed due to the WallStreetBets subreddit rallying behind the video game retailer. This stock increase helped give the company an opportunity to change its business.

GameStop has since appointed a new CEO and CFO with ecommerce experience, looking to expand the company. While the rebranding of EB Games in Canada might seem minor, it might give GameStop more cohesive branding across the globe.

Booooooo

Let us keep our heritage, even if it's as shallow as a name.

based on "feedback from our valued customers and stockholders."

So in short based on feedback from stockholders. I'm sure most Canadians would have prefered to keep the name even if just out of habit or are we losing our name based on American customer feedback. Cuz that would be sad.

@wahsobe: why is this Canadian heritage if EB Games was an American company with stores in Canada?

@MigGui: Electronics Boutique has been in Canada for almost 30 years and has been the gateway for many a young gamers introduction to the gaming world.

When American companies come across the border they often have to alter a piece of what they are to help to find their place in Canada. After all these years you can bet that EB Canada has become a Canadian company, adopted or not.

My understanding of that situation was not as much about supporting Gamestop as it was about sticking it to wall street and the short sellers. I could be wrong, I only read bits and pieces about that situation. Regardless if the rebranding, if they can get some Xbox series X's in stock in my local store I will be happy either way.

Why are they wasting money on such an unimportant change at this stage in the game (where they only have a few years left in business)? Baffling.

Presumably they'll also do like my local Gamestop and stop stocking games.

Strange to be honest. In Canada we had both EB Games and GameStop years ago but then all the GameStop stores were changed to EB Games and now they are all going to changed to GameStop. It's seems that the company doesn't know what they want.

@Barighm: They did, but then they went back to EB Games (at least in BC, where I live).

That’s kind of a shame as I kind of have a soft spot for EB games (the name.).

My first interaction with a store completely devoted to all things gaming came in the way of Electronics Boutique way back in I want to say 1999 with the release of the Sega Dreamcast.

Before then all my gaming purchases came from Toys R’ Us or department stores.

That being said, I can see why Gamestop would want to change the name to unify the brand but I still will hold onto the memories of my beloved Electronics Boutique.

@videogameninja: Microplay for me. Before then most of my games were bought from flee markets.

@Barighm: A flee market?

So I imagine you were purchasing (or your parents, lol.) a few old used games. Maybe during the Nintendo days or even before?

@videogameninja: Yep. $70 to $80 for NES/SNES/Genesis games was too much for my parents at the time, so I generally got them all used. I didn't start getting newer games more often until the PS1 era.

@Tiwill44: Oh you youngins. They also used to mostly be an electronics/pc shop with a moderate focus on gaming. Not much for console games in those days.
