Ed Boon Discusses Bringing Injustice 2 And NetherRealm Games To Nintendo Switch

Nothing has been confirmed yet, though.

If you have a Nintendo Switch, odds are that you want a version of every game to come to the platform. We've already seen some traditional 2D fighting games released for it, but those have primarily come in the form of older titles like Street Fighter II and Neo Geo classics. We spoke with NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon at the Brazil Game Show, and he was enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing Injustice 2 or future games to the system.

According to Boon, it would be possible to get Injustice 2 running on the system--though he suggested that there could be some shortcomings (presumably in terms of fidelity). "Yeah, I think at the end of the day you can make almost any game... there are inevitable compromises, but you know, you can make some version of Injustice on the Atari 2600," he told GameSpot. "It's not going to be great, but I bet you can make something."

Now Playing: Injustice 2 Video Review

Speaking more generally about the idea of developing games for Switch, Boon seemed optimistic. That said, the technical challenges could see NetherRealm turn to an outside studio to handle the process.

"Yeah, actually, I do," he said when asked if he has interest in exploring Switch games. "It is a pretty different hardware architecture; it's not like you can go from a PlayStation 4 to a Switch really easily. So I think we would need to set up something in terms of an external team. I know on the art team, we have enough people to do three console SKUs, and that would be something we'd need to work out.

"From the game player's perspective, would it be fun to play Injustice on [Switch]? I do think it would," he said. "You could have tournaments, everyone comes over with their own system and you can have whole structured tournaments and parallel gameplay and all that."

Earlier this year, Boon seemingly teased the possibility of a Switch version of Injustice 2. On Twitter, he posted a poll asking whether fans would rather see a Switch or Vita version, with the Nintendo console winning out. No official announcements have been made, but with support for the game continuing, it's not hard to imagine seeing a port eventually--perhaps that includes all of the DLC characters.

The Switch is Under powered! So why would anyone want to pay full price on a game with "Short Comings"? I know I don't and I luckily picked up 4 Splatoon bundles at Walmart! I will sell 3 of them and keep 1 of them!

On the topic of Netherrealm on Switch, I would actually like to see MKXL appear, if only for the possibility to include Ganondorf as a guest character. (In terms of moves though, I reckon he'd be similar to Shao Kahn's playable appearances)

@romeothebeast: The last games that came to PC were ports done by outside dev houses. And last time there was a HUGE backlash due to how poorly the port was done and updates were doled out. If I had to guess, I would say if a PC port was coming, it may be getting developed in house this time, after the main games are done. Currently they are still technically in development with all the DLC and all that.

@OniLordAsmodeus: I did read about them dropping the ball with the MKX port. I didn't have a gaming PC then so didn't care too much and got it for PS4. Though I read that the game is great now on PC but I guess the damage was done. I'd like at least a confirmation that a PC port is coming even if I have to wait for the complete edition.

Switch is slowly becoming the defacto handheld system.

I predict a Vita-like "Switch Lite" (with non-irremovable Joy-Cons, but a much sleeker design) will come out in the near future.

@Elranzer: That would defeat the entire purpose of the Switch.

Injustice should be a no brainer, Mortal Kombat? they did it on SNES and MK3/UMK3 were kinda superior on SNES [better sound, had blood and gore, handled a little better as well] so I say do it for both.....

>the short version: there's really no reason not to do it cus they did release the MK games on SNES in the 90's

@MJ12-Conspiracy: Well, MK games where also on N64 (MK4 and Trilogy). MK DA was on Gamecube and MK Deception best version was the Gamecube! And if I remember correctly MK:A was on the Wii, not sure if that was a good port tho.

I was JUST looking at Injustice 2 Tournaments yesterday on Youtube (don't own a PS4 or Xbox) and wondered why it DIDN'T come to the system. Ed Boon is a saying stuff like they are or have tried to get a running version on the system, which they haven't obviously because this game would EASILY run on the Switch and the only Downgrade if ANYTHING should be a resolution drop to 900p in docked... It's absolutely asinine for him to make bold statements on a system he most likely has never touch in a developer positioning. There are already games, while not having some of the graphical nuances, look just as good if not use more CPU and GPU power then this game would... A little less lighting and shadows MAYBE but this game should run like butter, ANY fighting game should... If they DON'T It's the developers problem for not being "good enough" and optimizing their games or ideas.

@zabieru: Wow dude, that might be the most ignorant post I’ve ever seen in my life. Do you honestly believe Ed Boon doesn’t know what he’s talking about?

I love my Switch an incredible amount, but there are obviously technical limits and hurdles when it comes to the hardware and porting these graphically heavy games.

@wexorian: I deduce that you have not once seen a single line of programming code on anything, let alone write your own, if you think that to port a game to another system is just clicking a button that says "lower graphics".

@videogameninja: what's funny too is both Wolfenstein and Doom were on SNES back in the day and on N64 they had Doom 64 which surprisingly was it's own thing and OMFG were those levels next level intricate for that era....IMO we need a Doom 64 port at some point if they added free look to it the game would be a blast, the on;y thing that held it back was the N64 con...
