Elden Ring: Can You Pause?

This pesky but familiar mechanic returns in Elden Ring. Here’s how it works.

The Soulsborne games are notoriously difficult for a number of reasons--one of which is that, except for Sekiro, you cannot pause them. If you set your controller down, you run the risk of being invaded by another player or being attacked by a gigantic creature. That remains the same in Elden Ring, sadly, but there are a few things you can do to mitigate being taken out if you have to step away for a moment.

In short, you can’t pause in Elden Ring, at least not in the traditional sense. Going into the menu simply places an interface on the screen while everything in the world remains constant. You can actually continue to control your character while the menu is up, which is nifty. However, if you’re playing in offline mode, you can put your PS5 system into suspend mode, and it will effectively “pause” the game. As soon as you jump back in, you’ll be able to pick up right where you left off. We haven't tested this on Xbox, but it presumably works the same way. However, keep in mind that if your system decides to update and restart, your latest save data on PS5 will likely kick the bucket, too.

Make sure to stop at a safe place if you need to step away. Or simply quit the game.

If you happen to be playing online at the time, and need to pause, your best bet is to simply quit out of the game. Thankfully, you’ll be able to load back in pretty much exactly where you last were, so it’s only slightly less convenient to do it this way.

Otherwise, it’s recommended to go to an area where you know you can’t be reached by enemies in-game, such as close to a Site of Grace or merchant. These areas aren’t always safe, but for the most part, you can gauge if enemies are likely to be nearby. This doesn’t prevent you from being reached by an enemy invader, so use this method at your own discretion if you need to pause.

@zander80: Actually, most adults would likely be smart enough to look at the comments-or just read the frickin' article-and educate themselves. They will then realize they can just quit the game wherever and they won't lose any progress.

Then there are people like you who would rather ignore the article and drop a snarky comment.

@Barighm: You're wrong. Article clearly says, that at least in PS5, he would have to go into PS5 suspend mode for the game to "pause", I mean how stupid is that. He is right, as an adult, we have phone calls perhaps coming in from our bosses, from our two girlfriends, or we forgot some important crap in the car, or whatever really, so each time, while we play and something comes up, we have to go into PS5 suspend mode to "pause" the game?

Also, nothing tested on XBOX yet in this regard, they got no idea yet.

So, he is absolutely right to say what he just said. I won't get this game because of exactly this reason. I want to be able to pause a game, this option was given to me since the days of Amiga and Ataris. Not being able to pause to make this game be "notoriously difficult" is just dumb. Definitely a game more intended to hardcore gamers.

I'm wrong that the comments state you can just exit the game? Perhaps you should reread my post.

In all likelihood the reviewer is wrong, because every single Souls game has always had the option to just exit the game which would leave you standing right where you were when you quit the game. And at no point have I ever said the lack of a pause feature is a good thing since you still can't exit during a boss fight or something, but this lack of pause feature thing is truly overblown and is just a foothold the haters are clinging to. This isn't like an MMO where you have to commit to long raids. You get a phone call, you die, oh well I guess I need to spend 20 seconds running back to where I was. Come on, guys.

@Barighm: Oh yeah, let me just exit the game to go take a piss, or answer the phone, or tend to my kid, in the middle of say a fight instead of FUCKING PAUSING IT. Incredible. fanboys can't even go "you know what? This is an actual legitimate criticism for a game like this" but have to contort themselves in every possible direction to shut down the legitimate criticism.

@phili878: He's not. A kite shield doesn't appear rightside up when the arm is at the side. Bring the arm up to defend though and it'll be the proper way.

Sorry, I don't think a game in real-time where you can't pause can be considered a "masterpiece." I actually liked FromSoftware's Enchanted Arms more than the Soulsborne games I've played (Demon's Souls and Dark Souls), but it shockingly got *worse* reviews . Despite the blind adulation Elden's Ring has received, it's safe to say I'll definitely be avoiding it like the plague.

@DukeGallison: You must also avoid all online and multiplayer games because none of them can be paused.

Seriously, how hard is it to just use the "quit" option? You literally reappear right where you left off. It's not a pause but it's pretty much the same result.

The new consoles have SSD so exiting the game is no problem. But if you put yourself in a safe spot and are somehow invaded and killed, it's easy to get your souls back. You can't get invaded twice in a row quickly. This has never been a problem for me, and I've played all the From games.

Just exit the game. You'll be standing at the exact same spot when you log back in unless you're in a boss fight or about to be killed.

@videogameninja: You can clearly see the game pausing while I'm navigating the menus at the 7min mark:
