Epic Now Requires Two-Factor Authentication To Claim Free Games

For a month at least.

If you haven’t already claimed For The King from the Epic Store as this week’s free game, the application will now require users to use a two-factor authentication to claim this game and free games going forward until May 21.

Epic Games users will need to enable the two-factor authentication setting on their account, with a prompt popping up if users attempt to claim a free game without enabling the setting first.

Epic is bringing in two-factor authentication in order to help protect user accounts from unauthorized access, adding an extra level of security for accounts when signing in.

Last year, Epic was sued after a security breach allowed hackers to access the personal information of users with Epic Games accounts. The lawsuit was centered around Epic’s failure to maintain adequate security measures and notify users of the security breach in a timely manner. While the lawsuit was dismissed, it seems Epic is taking steps to improve account security.

After enabling the two-factor authentication, players can claim a free copy of the strategic RPG For The King up until April 30. The next free games lined up are the famous horror title Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and the action RPG Crashlands, which will be available from April 30 to May 7.

Ive always had 2FA enabled and it proved useful during their hack a couple of years back I think when folks were having their accounts hacked by people trying to steal fornite accounts (I had an epic account For years but for shadow complex). Since then I’ve enabled it for all my game accounts.

This is like a voter ID law, which just ends up with fewer people voting. That's Epic's goal here - they want fewer people to claim their "free" stuff.

@Zorlac: Then they'd mandate it for all accounts, not ones claiming free games.

Man, this really sounds like they're going to send you a 2FA request just to claim the game, not so much sounding like it requires you to enable 2FA on your account going forward to effortlessly claim it.

FYI, it is the latter...

I have 111 games from them now -- bought 5 during sales, and never missed a single free game since the first day. (..and oh, how the fools have whined about it all.)

They're not getting my phone number, nor an authenticator app, on ANY platform.

Looks like they'll also support email, so perhaps this won't be a a complete stop... They already have one of my trash addresses, so that should work.

So now the security breaches will hand hackers over my phone information as well, on top of everything else.

That's great!
