Epic Worked on Gears of War 4 for Six Months Before Abandoning It

Not everything was lost, however.

A new report today from Game Informer shines a light on the work that Gears of War creator Epic Games did on Gears of War 4 before the studio ultimately decided to drop it and sell the franchise to Microsoft.

Epic did preproduction on Gears of War 4 for more than six months before deciding to move on--with the game and with the franchise overall. Producer Rod Fergusson, who worked on Gears of War 4 at Epic and is now leading the game at Microsoft studio The Coalition, said he saw the writing on the wall for Epic going in a different direction as it related to game development.

No Caption Provided

"Back in the days of Unreal Engine 3, [Epic] had this belief that we'd only build technology that we would use," he explained. "So if Gears didn't need it, it generally didn't get put into the engine. That was from a perspective of, if we don't use it, it’s going to decay. If we don't touch it, it will just rot on the vine and then we'd have bad code.

"That's not how it was with Gears 4," he added. "Epic's initial Gears 4 engine was very mobile- and PC-centric more than it was console-focused. You can see their focus shift towards games like Fortnite and Paragon and stuff like that."

Game Informer goes on to mention that, following Chinese Internet giant's major investment in Epic, the North Carolina-based studio started making more PC-focused titles. "It's possible that Epic didn't know how the Gears franchise fit into this new vision," it reported, adding that, after Fergusson and Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski exited Epic, questions about the future of the brand emerged.

Epic ultimately started up conversations with Microsoft about selling Gears of War. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer was part of those negotiations, and he told Game Informer, "[Epic] didn't have a real clear roadmap for where Gears was going" after Tencent invested in Epic and Fergusson and Bleszinski left.

Microsoft officially acquired the Gears of War franchise in January 2013 for an undisclosed sum.

As for how Epic's vision for Gears of War 4 differs from The Coalition's, it's not exactly clear. But it is known that Epic came up with the idea for the fourth game to be set in the future with Marcus Fenix's son in the lead role, two pieces of the story that The Coalition kept intact.

While the new Swarm enemy type was part of Epic's original plan for Gears of War 4, The Coalition changed it significantly. "We started talking about what the Swarm would be at Epic, but [The Coalition] completely changed it as we developed the game on our own. The name stuck, but none of the monsters stuck," he said.

For more interesting insight into Gears of War 4's development, be sure to read the full Game Informer story as well as the magazine's cover story in its April issue.

Gears of War 4 has co-op, a staple of the series, but it is limited limited to two players locally and online, and not four, as was the case with Gears of War 3. It's unclear what Epic had in mind in terms of co-op for its original vision for Gears of War 4.

In other news, the sequel's resolution and frame rate have been confirmed, and The Coalition has teased that a PC version is "possibly" in the works.

Gears of War 4 will launch in full in fall 2016 and a beta will be held in April.

Hmm that's a lot of time and money down the drain, but ultimately that was probably for the best seeing where Epic is heading down. That being said, Coalition seems to be doing a fine job with GoW4.

@SpicyRamen10: well MS bought the franchise, so I'm sure the work that was already put into GoW4 was factored into the purchase price

Epic has been a Chinese company for a couple of years now. Don't expect anything else than F2P games for the Asian market.

That killed it for me. Sadness.

What's with Microsoft and Developer relations? Happened with Halo 4 when Bungie left and then with Gears 4 when Epic departed. There's been others as well that have had issues. I dont get it.

@goodgamesguy:

Stop spreading myths. MS and Epic left on GOOD terms. Their deal just ran out and they went their ways. Epic according to the article just thought it would be a good idea to sell their ip to MS since they were not doing anything with it. Completely different from MS vs Bungie.

@introvese: I think that was more to do with Sony wanting a MOBA on its console because MS got Smite as a timed exclusive and a deal was struck etc.

@goodgamesguy: Those are two completely different situations.

Bungie was an internal studio that wanted to get out of their contract as soon as possible, so they made Halo 3: ODST (which was obviously a rush job) and Halo: Reach (which they did better with). After that, they sold the IP to MS and the folks at Bungie that wanted to stay at MS went to 343i while the rest went to the refreshed Bungie that is now owned by Activision (or at least the Destiny IP is). Bungie released 5 games under MS.

Epic was a third party studio that made games for multiple platforms including the Xbox brand. It just so happens that Gears of War was their biggest IP (possibly bigger than Unreal Tournament, if not almost as popular) and was exclusive to MS because they helped spawn the franchise by funding it....

@LPDisturbedHU: 2 different situations yeah but both of them clearly didn't want anything to do with Microsoft in the end. Also do you play on Xbox? Ever since I bought the Gears Remaster Digital 2 weeks ago it won't allow me to purchase any of the other backwards compatible gears games. I don't know why.

@goodgamesguy: For Bungie it was because they wanted more creative control and didn't want to be limited to one series. Obviously they partnered up with the wrong company in both cases.

Epic didn't know what the hell to do with the Gears series after Judgment (which was a mess anyway). How is that MS's fault?

And you don't get the Gears games (1-Judgment) for free UNLESS you played Gears Ultimate last year, just as it was advertised.

@LPDisturbedHU: Alright. No I mean the store won't let me buy them separate. Before I bought the ultimate edition I could but then after I bought it the store says the titles arnt available. I'm guessing it's fucked up because of the previous deal.

@goodgamesguy: Explains why half the staff from Bungie decided to stick around and form 343i, and the rest eventually got fired from the team before Destiny could ship.

Meanwhile on the other side, Gears was the baby of Rod & Cliffy, neither of which work for Epic. Meanwhile Epic's new moba is apparently heading to X1, which negates your 'clearly didn't want anything to do with Microsoft' statement.

@suicidesn0wman: WHAT, NO one from Bungie left to form 343 studios!!!! only one guy from Bungie left and that guy had nothing to do with the halo story or game development. All the developers at 343 studios came from other studios that closed down. go to wikipedia and read the info

that is why halo 4 and 5 felt so strange if you play halo 1 2 3 and then play 4 and 5 right after

@icelandichossi: If you call Frank O' Connor (Development Director), Vic Deleon (Digital Artist), Chad Armstrong (Tester), Donnie Taylor (Environment Artist), Will Christiansen (Senior Animator) and Dan Callan (Level Designer) and a few others nobodies then you'd be correct. If you consider them somebody then you are wrong. You can't really say NOBODY from Bungie joined 343i then turn around and say some guy did in your next sentence. You are contradicting your own statement without anyone's intervention.

All I can say is, games like Halo 5 and very likely Gears 4, are made out of necessity instead of inspiration and usually aren't as good as they deserve to be and usually end up focusing on their online elements as a fall back. I hope I'm wrong cause I really enjoyed the first 3 Gears games.

you don't need a story with these games. just put monsters in front of the player and shoot them until they stop moving. done. whoever plays gears for the story has no idea what storytelling is and likely has never read a good book or watched a good movie in all their life.

@Xristophoros: Sounds like someone is judging the "Gears of War" campaigns without actually playing them.

The stories are great. Sure, they aren't "The Last of Us" level of story telling, but that's why TLOU is special.

@Xristophoros: One of my favorite past times is reading books. The story of the original 3 Gears games wasn't bad as far as game stories go. It's a cover shooter so it doesn't have to be Shakespeare, just competent and interesting enough to move the game forward.
