ESA: 90% of E3 space sold, 40,000 expected

Industry trade group says it is on track to meet attendance goal for annual game exhibition in June.

The Entertainment Software Association is well on its way toward scaling back up its annual game-industry confab, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The industry trade group said today that it has parceled out 90 percent of its exhibitor space and is on track to hit its attendance goal of 40,000 individuals. The 2009 event is scheduled to take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 2-4.

The ESA's new E3 format is in many ways a return to the glitzy events last seen in 2006, before it was substantially downsized from approximately 60,000 attendees to just 5,000 in 2007. According to event organizers, the 2009 show will offer both increased exposure due to the lifting of attendance caps and expanded booth sizes. The ESA also said that it has expanded exhibitor invites to "broader technological circles."

Thus far, the format appears to be gaining the support of the third-party publishing community. "The E3 Expo is bigger and better this year and for EA, the expanded format means we'll have more demos, announcements, promotions and blockbuster games than ever before," commented EA's VP of corporate communications, Jeff Brown. Following E3 2008, EA CEO John Riccitiello bemoaned the show's scope, saying that unless E3 returned to its former state, the publisher would abandon the conference altogether.

THQ VP of publishing Scott Guthrie shared Brown's sentiments, saying as part of the ESA's announcement today, "It is very exciting for the videogame industry to once again have a global platform from which to report on the trends, innovations and exciting new games that are fueling the growth of our market."

Thanks in large part to skyrocketing membership dues that rose 1,600 percent over the past two years, the ESA saw a number of high-profile departures in 2008. However, several notable defectors, including Activision Blizzard and LucasArts, have announced that they will again exhibit at the show. The ESA has also acquired new members in recent weeks, with X-Blades publisher SouthPeak Interactive and Harvest Moon house Natsume both joining the representative body's ranks.

Thats still over 20,000 less people than 2006's E3 but at least its a step in the right direction. E3 2007 and 2008 were a joke and while Sony and Microsoft tried to make the best of it with their press conferences, Nintendo and quite a few others stopped using E3 entirely as the main stage to unveil new games.

Wow that'll be a huge crowd. Also, ready to see what Sony has in store for the PS3. Maybe they'll actually focus more on the PS3 this time, as opposed to last year when talked almost as much about the PS2 as they did the PS3.

Okay listen up...E3 without thousands upon thousands of real fans, is like watching the Soccer Final or Superbowl with an empty stadium.

Without Activision or Blizzard, there are not many good reasons to attend.

I can understand where they're coming from, and what they were going for, quality over quantity; 40,000 attendees still seems like too much. Everyone always hears about the same big names, so in reality, nothing has changed for the outside viewer over the past 2 years. What everyone doesn't see is a flooding of uninteresting no-name attendees.

At least the ESA is LISTENING to people. Good for ESA for not being narrow in scope and listening to the people that give it life.

Makes me chuckle that everyone commenting is happy about the return of the old style E3 format- but have never attended an E3 ever or ever. Kudos to you! Keep on dreaming!

Ohhh YES! The old time, "old school" format of E3 finally returns! So the Industry's most important, most popular Expo is UP and running, again :) I wanna be there!

Looking good. I really miss the "old" E3. Even the new ones hasn't been that exciting to follow, and I'm like a dog with a bone when it comes to E3. But lately it has been weirdly dull to follow. Perhaps it wasn't even the best time for the show to change, as Sony struggled to find out what they wanted to do with the PS3 and it was early on in the next generation, while the old generation was dying out. Hopefully, this year it will change, as gaming on the next gen has really picked up. If everything goes well this E3 should be back to form and I couldn't be happier about it.
