EU Approves Microsoft's Bethesda Acquisition, Clearing Another Big Hurdle

The regulatory group was one of the biggest roadblocks standing in the way of Microsoft buying Bethesda.

Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda is one step closer to a reality, as one of the last big roadblocks has now been cleared: the European Commission has approved Microsoft's purchase. The acquisition was approved without conditions, and pending approval in the US, it appears the $7.5 billion deal will indeed come to fruition. [Update: Indeed, Microsoft has officially bought Bethesda parent company ZeniMax.]

The ruling was similar to other Microsoft purchases (including GitHub most recently), with the competition commission finding that the merger "does not raise serious doubts as to its compatibility with the common market." Once the purchase is final, Microsoft's in-house studio tally will jump up to 23, with studios such as Arkane Studios (Prey, Deathloop), iD Software (Doom), MachineGames (Wolfenstein), Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), Tango Gameworks (Ghostwire: Tokyo), and more joining the fold.

As part of the new arrangement, Bethesda's future games will release on Xbox Game Pass for no extra charge the same day they launch elsewhere. It's unclear if Microsoft will move toward making future Bethesda games purely Xbox and PC titles, though it's honoring the agreement between Bethesda and Sony to make Deathloop a timed PlayStation exclusive. A new subsidiary called Vault has also been created to handle Bethesda properties in the future.

Microsoft is rumored to be hosting an event later this month, where it could potentially detail some of the plans it has for future Bethesda titles. The question around exclusivity has been a hot topic since the merger was announced in September last year and could be telling for the futures of projects such as Starfield, The Elder Scrolls VI, and more.

This acquisition is one of the biggest in the history of the games industry. For instance, when Microsoft acquired Mojang, the studio behind the massively popular Minecraft, the price was only $2.5 billion.

Having Tango GamesWork will not be a huge deal honestly, and I say that as a huge fan of Evil Within/ Psycho Break games. Ghostwire has been in development hell due to creative differences with Bethesda, making the studio go a direction that was not originally intended. And from what I've read Mikami Shinji will leave for M-Two soon after his contract expires. Likely with a lot of remaining Tango joining him.

The big one is id Software. They are one of the best developers on the planet. And that is from someone who thinks Eternal was a little too edgelord the game. I think Microsoft would be smart to have id Software develop Halo games in the future too. Xbox loyalists pretend to be big fans of current Halo but no one truly believes 343 is better than Bungie. id Software however?!

Last note, don't hold out for Elder Scrolls VI to be anything special. Same people who developed Fall Out 76 after all. Skyrim was ten years ago, abandon all hope.

@RSM-HQ: Fallout 76 was not developed by either the same team as Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Bethesda Maryland is the one that developed those.

@keiser69: From my understanding they're the team who has been doing all the content post launch. Bethesda themselves took claim as the primary developer back when the game was announced.

@RSM-HQ: Actually after a disastrous launch they turned over a lot of the development of 76 over to the ESO team(Zenimax Online). Bethesda Game Studios is actually 4 different developers Maryland, Montreal , Austin and Dallas. Maryland is responsible for traditional Fallout and Elder Scrolls. Austin was 76. Montreal and Dallas are more support studios.

@keiser69: Thank you for this information. Was not aware the studio was split up into four, and three are not involved with the studios bigger portfolio.

Which does beg the question what has the Maryland one done since Fallout 4 in 2016. . The Skyrim ports? I find that difficult to believe personally.

We know of the two games they're developing I suppose but since 2016 is a very long time, considering we've seen nothing of both.

@RSM-HQ: Well when you consider after Fallout 4 they had some DLC and then they had a major engine rewrite 5 years to Starfield is about right. The rumor is Starfield was at least planned for this year. No idea if CoVid has impacted that. But it could still release Bethesda is famous for showing games very late within months of release

I think Microsoft having those not joining GamePass pay full price for those games on rival systems is far more satisfyin than locking then behind exclusivity.....after all someone has to pay for development cost, who better than the gamers from other platforms.
