EU Approves Microsoft's Bethesda Acquisition, Clearing Another Big Hurdle

The regulatory group was one of the biggest roadblocks standing in the way of Microsoft buying Bethesda.

71 Comments

Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda is one step closer to a reality, as one of the last big roadblocks has now been cleared: the European Commission has approved Microsoft's purchase. The acquisition was approved without conditions, and pending approval in the US, it appears the $7.5 billion deal will indeed come to fruition. [Update: Indeed, Microsoft has officially bought Bethesda parent company ZeniMax.]

The ruling was similar to other Microsoft purchases (including GitHub most recently), with the competition commission finding that the merger "does not raise serious doubts as to its compatibility with the common market." Once the purchase is final, Microsoft's in-house studio tally will jump up to 23, with studios such as Arkane Studios (Prey, Deathloop), iD Software (Doom), MachineGames (Wolfenstein), Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), Tango Gameworks (Ghostwire: Tokyo), and more joining the fold.

As part of the new arrangement, Bethesda's future games will release on Xbox Game Pass for no extra charge the same day they launch elsewhere. It's unclear if Microsoft will move toward making future Bethesda games purely Xbox and PC titles, though it's honoring the agreement between Bethesda and Sony to make Deathloop a timed PlayStation exclusive. A new subsidiary called Vault has also been created to handle Bethesda properties in the future.

Microsoft is rumored to be hosting an event later this month, where it could potentially detail some of the plans it has for future Bethesda titles. The question around exclusivity has been a hot topic since the merger was announced in September last year and could be telling for the futures of projects such as Starfield, The Elder Scrolls VI, and more.

This acquisition is one of the biggest in the history of the games industry. For instance, when Microsoft acquired Mojang, the studio behind the massively popular Minecraft, the price was only $2.5 billion.

PS fans should be excited. They claim exclusives are better.

I've been waiting 10 years for Skyrim to come to GOG, and right now we're only 8 months and 3 days away from when that would traditionally happen. I really hope this acquisition doesn't change those plans.

Wow....i haven't written any thing on Gamespot for YEARS!...but i have to after this one.

This might be the biggest acquisition of all times in the gaming industry. I don't remember the last time anyone bought a PUBLISHER, it's usually publishers that do the buyout. And this awful if you are a console only gamer and a PS fanboy. But the real problem is.....MS destroys every company they bought until now, so...........does this mean Bethesda will be garbage from now on or is just a matter of time for them to go independent again like Twisted Pixel, which became garbage after being bought? But all in all, unless their games go console exclusive, this move is rather pointless in the "console war".

This is not, in any way, a Sony vs MS, i don't do that crap nor i care for this "wars", but it's a fact. Remember Digital Envil? Lionhead? Rare (kinect crap)? Emsemble?

@Evil_Sidekick: Lionhead killed itself with Molyneux’s famous over promising and underachieving with the Fable series. It would be dead owned or not, just like his other companies are. Rare, I agree, but they turned it around years ago, their past couple games were very successful. And the thing is, this is a very unstable industry. Look at the devs of Diablo II, one of the most successful games of all times, they were closed halfway through a Diablo 3 that never saw the light, then created and killed two or three more studios in the wake of their Torchlight series...

@MigGui:

Before Lionhead there was Bullfrog, which was bought by EA and destroyed years after (with Origin and Westwood). MS bought Lionhead in 2008, the same year Fable II came out (which means it was being made before the buyout). So, the only AAA game they ever did under MS was Fable III, after that it was a XBLA "Fable Heroes" and the Kinect crap "Fable: The Journey". So, all in all, you can't say that Lionhead "killed itself". Lionhead death was about Molyneux leaving, in both cases, because he was disgruntled with EA and MS.

As for Rare; they were one of the greatest companies in video game industry when working with Nintendo. They were even great when in the 80s, making games for the ZX Spectrum when they were called Ultimate Play The Game. So, they were great in the 80s, they were great under Nintendo...and now they are "just one more team".

Last but not least, Blizzard North. BN, like the name states was an division of, an internal developer of Blizzard. As sad as it is, is not nearly the same thing as to buy a company and destroy it.

@Evil_Sidekick: yes, the only AAA game Lionhead made while a Microsoft company was Fable 3. But Fable 1 and 2 were exclusives and published by Microsoft, so there was already a big entanglement going on. And one of the reasons why the other two games were not big names was precisely because Molyneux burned bridges by making Fable 3 a lot worse than people expected. After that, he became a joke with his constant flops at 22cans, which is basically defunct now, with no blame from MS.

Rare was one of the greatest while working for Nintendo, now they're "just one more team" which made one of the most successful exclusives of the last generation Xbox. They also made Perfect Dark Zero and Viva Piñata for Xbox 360, and are now working on a huge AAA exclusive for current gen, Everwild. It's very hard to argue that MS "destroyed" Rare just because they're not making Donkey Kong anymore.

And yes, Blizzard North was an internal studio, but you completely ignored my whole argument of how independent studios fail all the time too, which was exemplified by the studios that emerged from the ashes of Blizzard North. I wasn't even talking about BN specifically. This argument that "companies buy studios and destroy them" is nonsensical, as there are dozens of indie studios, internal studios, and acquired studios failing all the time. Studios fail. It's a hard business.

@Evil_Sidekick: Think that is a bit unfair as Sony has closed their fair share of studios as well, Bigbig Studios , Evolution Studios , Guerilla Cambridge , Incognito Entertainment , Machester Studio , Studio Liverpool , Zipper Interactive and most recently the rumor is Japan Studios. Also I would argue that all of those closures were before Phil was in charge of all things Xbox.

@keiser69:

Evolution Studios was closed, is a fact. BigBig was a sister developer for Evolution Studios, making it the closing of one being the closing of both. Guerilla Cambridge was formerly known as SCE Studio Cambridge, which makes it an internal Sony studio. In 2012, they changed their name and became a sister studio of Guerilla Games. Guerilla Studios, as we all know, still exists. Incognito Entertainment was always a division of Santa Monica Studio, which in turn is a Sony internal developer. Zipper Interactive was also a internal studio. All developers that have "studio" in them (Manchester, Liverpool and Japan) are internal.

All in all, the only studios of the ones you mention were actually bought and close was Evolution. But the most important take is that Sony actually creates studios (they also buy of course), MS buys them all....except for 343. That was always one of the biggest problems with MS when compared to Sony, MS works by "see an Ip they want as exclusive, so they buy the company". Sony actually creates Ips.

Again this is not a Sony vs MS crap, i still have a 360 which i love to death, so i don't do those fanboys wars nor i care for them. This is about facts.

@Evil_Sidekick: So wait the fact that Sony internally created the studios means when they close them it doesn't count ? They have still closed their fair share of studios. Not only that but closing Lionhead was a good call , Digital Anvil made Brute Force noone liked it , Ensemble is the only one I might have a problem with but I dont know the particulars of why. Rare still makes games and havent made any Kinect crap obviously since Phil took over. Sea of Thieves is doing really well now. Again everything you are complaining about happened before Phil was in charge of all things Xbox. What has happened since he has been in charge? They removed Kinect lowered the price of the One, developed the One X , created Game Pass which is almost inarguably the best deal in games , developed the Series X and added 17 studios. 17 studios added since Phil took over. The biggest complaint about Xbox is they dont have the AAA 1st party like Sony , well adding it slowly over time is not enough to compete. They cant just work internally especially now that they need to feed game pass with new releases. They have made internals besides 343 as well , The Coalition , The Initiatve and Worlds Edge. I would also put Playground and Undead Labs on this list since basically they have been second party until MS bought them outright. They have only ever made games for Xbox

Until they start coming out with the big games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Dishonored, Prey, etc. Thats when I'll snatch me up a Xbox Series X. For now I'm enjoying my Switch and PS5.

@iamthetruth101: Elipses... have only 3 periods...

Also... grow up. Nobody is "finished." I hope Bethesda can return to form after this acquisition, but as they're being given full autonomy (according to my last peek into the topic) I highly doubt much will change.

As an owner of both of the new, current-gen consoles, it is good to see that both of my entertainment 'investments' will be worthwhile at some point.

@blissrevisited: I wouldn't worry about Bethesda having autonomy. One of the reasons they made the decisions they did ... cough Fallout76.... is because they needed the money. That's not really a problem anymore. Their costs for the kinds of games they were making were astronomical, and while Skyrim sold 30 million it seems they used those profits to expand..hence Doom development Wolfenstien reboot, Dishonored etc

@iamthetruth101: I sure hope not! This is why fans of both consoles should celebrate competition. It just ends well for us gamers. I've been buying Sony Playstation for more than a decade now. If Game Pass starts getting these new titles on it then I'll definitely subscribe using my PC.

People do not understand what a brilliant move this has been for Microsoft.

Microsoft looked at the entire gaming market and with the exception of Playstation, you can play Microsoft's games almost anywhere. Where as Playstation exclusives will only be available to those with a Playstation, Microsoft exclusives will be available to those with an Xbox or a PC or any Pad/Mobile devise, and in some cases, Nintendo Switch. Microsoft has approximately 80% of the gaming market covered.

So all the Microsoft haters out there that say "I can play these games on my PC" I hope you realize that that is exactly what Microsoft wants you to do. They don't care where you play the game...just as long as you play. And GamePass is the platinum business model and the best deal in gaming today.

Kudos to MS.

Sony’s big titles are one and done games by definition.
