Every Activision Blizzard Franchise Microsoft Will Own In Huge Acquisition Deal

Microsoft announced it is preparing to acquire Activision Blizzard. Though the deal won't finalize until 2023, it includes a number of big and dormant franchises.

Microsoft shook the industry today with the announcement of its biggest acquisition yet, not just in gaming but across all industries. The $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard will bring together two of the biggest companies in gaming. Activision Blizzard has some of the most successful franchises in the industry, which will fall under the ever-growing umbrella of Microsoft once the deal finalizes.

Part of the size of the deal comes from Activision's own spate of acquisitions over the last decades. Though Activision is no slouch with big franchises, most notably its annualized Call of Duty releases and the ongoing battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone, it has also made big moves of its own that will now fold into the Microsoft umbrella.

Now Playing: Xbox Buys Activision Blizzard For Tons Of Money, Bobby Kotick To Leave in 2023 | GameSpot News

In 2008, Activision merged with Blizzard, bringing the wildly successful World of Warcraft franchise along with games like Starcraft. Blizzard has several other IPs under its belt as well, including more recent ones like Overwatch and the WoW spin-off Hearthstone. Following the success of Hearthstone on mobile devices, Blizzard has also started to stretch into the mobile market with games like the upcoming Diablo Immortal.

And speaking of mobile, Activision also acquired King in 2016. That acquisition has been among the most profitable for Activision, with huge mobile franchises like Candy Crush leading the way. This is significant because Microsoft has had an eye on the mobile market, most recently by emphasizing its cloud gaming through Game Pass.

According to Axios reporter Stephen Totilo, documents show several other older and defunct trademarks that will also become Microsoft property if the deal goes through. Those include IP like Hexen, Gabriel Knight, and Pitfall!, along with out-of-use game labels like Sierra.

There are lots of open questions regarding the deal, including which franchises will remain multiplatform, when the Activision library will hit Game Pass, and whether the deal gets through financial regulators. Check below for the full lineup of Activision Blizzard franchises that Microsoft will own when the deals go through.

  • Activision
    • Call of Duty
    • Crash Bandicoot
    • Guitar Hero
    • Spyro the Dragon / Skylanders
    • Tony Hawk
  • Blizzard
    • Diablo
    • Hearthstone
    • Lost Vikings
    • Overwatch
    • Starcraft
    • World of Warcraft
  • King
    • Bubble Witch Saga
    • Candy Crush
    • Diamond Diaries Saga
    • Farm Heroes Saga
    • Pet Rescue

I think it's funny how much people are focusing on how this will potentially affect the Xbox. lol As if that in any way measures up to the potential impact it will have on PC gaming. Once again, Xbox fanboi short-sightedness. Your console sucks and will always come in third place against Sony and Nintendo. No matter how shitty of a half-assed WoW port they create for it.

As a businessman myself I congratulate MS for this acquisition. What people don't realize that in any business...in order to grow you can't do it yourself unless you have the vision, investment, capex and are willing to take the enormous risk of losing it all.

By acquiring Activision/Blizzard, MS has minimised risk by not having to worry about the vision and core competencies of the company and can just leave it as is. All MS has to do is make sure the right management is in place and that the employees are leading fulfilling roles. It will lead to the Xbox not only having a much more diversified gaming ip portfolio but will also raise its valuation.

This is the businessman in me saying this (also cause I invested lol). The gamer in me is starting see monopolistic tendencies happening where great IPs are being controlled by one company which essentially means that you have to buy their hardware (then again i own all the consoles so don't really care much but for those who have to budget their gaming it can be a pain in the ass).

you have so huge wall. when i look at those names im just imagining things from 1980-2005. and we saw most of those franchises fall from stardom into the gutter. so even if you managed to make absolutely stunning new crash bandicoot people would still compare it to the originals, which you really shouldnt aim for.

i still think the way the original xbox came out with halos, ampeds, fuzion frenzys, blinxs, azuriks and you could even say splinter cell and kotor was magnificent. you didnt take anyones sloppy seconds but came up with new characters and worlds that while not all games were amazing they had surprise and content. x360 also almost did the same when initially gears of war, kameo, dead rising, mass effect and bioshock at least were planned to be exclusive

id hope theyd have the vision and courage to come out with that again. sea of thieveses, gunks and awokens might not be bad signals. but dont jump into crash 13, spyro 8, cod 25, tony hawk 11 etc. wagon

@rancid36: I like Xbox but I do not never want to see that happen. Sony will survive this round but it will be hard. Even though Sony may be on top in the console dept, MS is flexing its muscle buying up companies showing Sony they have lots and lots of money which I must say MS does have an advantage.

I agree, but just because they have the money doesn’t mean they can just buy whoever they want.

Microsoft infamously tried to buy Nintendo a while ago and they just laughed in their faces.

@Subterfuge: Actually, they can if they have the money and if it is legal to do so. As said, I would like Sony to stay in the game, it is all business. Sony did push the buttons of MS and MS responded. Most may not like it but life will move on as this will be the talk of the day for a while but then all will move on.

They can and will. Nintendo makes children's games. The real games are on PC or Xbox.

@Massacher: You can only buy that which is up for sale. Nintendo isn't interested in selling. Microsoft was not lacking for money back in 2001.

FYI childrens properties are some of the most profitable in the world since people will often spend money more easily on their children then they will on themselves, on top of that Nintendo actually primarily builds family friendly games as apposed to specifically childrens games. The difference is that children can play family friendly games but they are fun for all ages.

What Microsoft really needs is a whole division built around the production of family friendly games. Relying on third parties is not a great approach. Kinect was that for a while and then they dropped it without finding a replacement. The Xbox is not viewed as a family friendly machine which is a shame since it's just a gaming machine and could easily accommodate this role. Personally I would like to see the Xbox add support for the Kinect and it's games. It would be good way to quickly jumpstart it's family friendly side.

Personally, I could care less. This merger won't make any of their games console specific. On a side note I'd LOVE to see some Sierra properties get remade or even new ones created. Most notably, No One Lives Forever, SWAT, Tribes, Contract J.A.C.K., Nexus, World in Conflict or a new FEAR game. Oh, my, yes. A new FEAR game would be SWEEEEET.

Tribes yes please. I missed out on it the first time because we only had dialup. Now that NBN is pretty much everywhere it'd be great to jump in and cut sick!

@naomha1: You mean you couldn’t care less. You just said the opposite of what you meant. So many people don’t know this.

If you could care less, it means you care, at least a little, and you could care less. If you couldn’t care less, it means you don’t care at all, and you can’t care any less than not at all.

@ceelogreen94: I seriously doubt this will be the case. COD might be a short timed exclusive and free on day one on the Xbox and PC though. Basically, if you're a COD fan playing it on the PS means that you're basically throwing money into something that millions of gamers will be getting for free. The value proposition alone just steamroll over anything in the gaming landscape. Just imagine, any COD, FREE. Any Fallout free, any Doom game, free, that's not even considering the other studios. Its just crazy.

@Zetler: your definition of "free" might be a bit skewed. those getting it "for free" are paying into a subscription service. while PS players may pay $70, those "getting it for free" are paying monthly to access it. If Microsoft wasn't making more of a profit off of game pass over the traditional sale methodology, it wouldn't exist.

@soulmuncher666: Sony thought they could outcompete MS with a 20 years old business model. WRONG. Exclusives won't sustain them when MS starts giving out everything under the sun on day one with Gamepass. As usual, Sony is slow to adapt. The Japanese always are behind the trend sadly.

They're going to mandate Microsoft accounts for any games that have an online component like they did with Minecraft aren't they (in particular they will probably scrap Battle.net entirely and integrate all the games that use it into Microsoft's ecosystem)? Man that sucks

@somberfox: Probably the opposite, they are going to use Bnet as their MS front store.

On addition to windows own store and cut steam from the pie. Deal with epic % of the cut instead if they want a third party. And i dont mean only this purchase, all of MS owned catalog will leave steam, they have tittles to pull it off now.

@somberfox: I believe that Battle.net is going away. No way is MS going to allow A/B to have a competing platform. They want all their eggs under one platform and that is Game Pass. But I could be wrong, Bethesda still has their own launcher even though it is tiny compared to Battle.net.
