Star Wars is one of the biggest names on the planet, spawning a galaxy of merchandise, toys, clothing lines, and of course, video games. Multiple publishers and developers are working on the Star Wars series across several genres, and many of them are from some big-name studios with lots of experience and style. These include everything from strategy games to first-person shooters, with the list of upcoming Star Wars games being so diverse that nearly everyone can find something they'll like.
It's not all good news, however, as the last year has been full of cancellations and studio closures that impacted various projects. Star Wars was no exception, as Respawn's reported Star Wars FPS has now been canceled.
There are reportedly plans for two new Star Wars games every fiscal year--one larger AAA title and another smaller project. Some are years away, but others are coming much sooner, and with recent upgrades like Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered, there is no shortage of Star Wars games to play. These are all of the upcoming Star Wars games announced right now.
Star Wars: Hunters
Developed by Zynga, Star Wars: Hunters is another unique take on the franchise--but this time it's coming only to mobile devices and Nintendo Switch. A third-person PvP arena action game, Star Wars: Hunters lets you play as a wide variety of character archetypes, including Stormtroopers, Jedi, and Wookies. A "Hunters of the Outer Rim" competition will run alongside the game, offering rewards for the most dedicated and skilled hunters in the galaxy.
Hunters been frequently delayed, but it now has an official release date set for June 4.
Star Wars Outlaws
The game coming soonest on the double-sunned horizon is Star Wars Outlaws, a third-person shooter that takes place in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This game puts you in the boots of the criminal Kay Vess, accompanied by her space-dog-like companion, Nix. The game also features classic dogfights in space as well as many planets to explore with Ubisoft's style of open-world exploration.
As the name suggests, Outlaws will explore the seedy criminal element of the Star Wars universe, a stark change from the usual Rebel warfare and Jedi spiritualism. Kay Vess is a rookie scoundrel trying to make her way in the galaxy, smuggling goods and dealing with crime lords. Expansions are also planned, including one that pairs Kay up with the infamous Jabba the Hutt.
Star Wars Outlaws will release for PS5, on August 30, 2024. For more, check out everything we know about Star Wars Outlaws and our Outlaws preorder guide.
Knights of the Old Republic remake
When it comes to acclaimed Star Wars games, you'll hear Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic's name mentioned more than just about anything else. The sprawling BioWare RPG is still one of the most beloved Star Wars games of all time, and a precursor to its later hits like Mass Effect. A full remake is currently in the works from port specialist Aspyr, and it's headed to both PS5 and PC. This appeared to be another victim of game cancellations, as we received word that it was no longer in active development. However, Saber Interactive says the project is "alive and well" despite those seemingly rocky developments.
EA's separate Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is still ongoing, but Knights of the Old Republic's story-focused single-player RPG style was riveting nearly two decades ago and should stand the test of time when the remake is ready to launch.
Star Wars Eclipse
An unexpected new game from Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream, the upcoming Star Wars: Eclipse is set in the High Republic era. That era is the newest time period for Star Wars, taking place hundreds of years before the prequel trilogy, when the Jedi were at the height of their power and influence and the Republic was flourishing.
This is an unexplored period in Star Wars lore--at least for video games--and Quantic Dream's unique gameplay and narrative style could make it vastly different from other Star Wars games. The studio has been experiencing its own share of problems recently, however, with lawsuits alleging poor treatment. It's not clear how far along Eclipse is, so no official release window has been set.
Skydance New Media (Amy Hennig) Star Wars Project
Amy Hennig, best known for her work on the Uncharted series, has a new studio called Skydance New Media that has already landed some big projects with Disney. Aside from Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, the studio is set to make game set in the Star Wars universe. Described as a cinematic action-adventure with an original story, this will be Skydance's second announced project. No release date has been set.
Bit Reactor's Star Wars strategy game
In development at the new Bit Reactor studio, this Star Wars strategy game is one of the Star Wars titles EA announced in January 2022, alongside the canceled Respawn FPS, and the already-released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The Bit Reactor game is being made in collaboration with Respawn, and former XCOM art director Greg Foertsch leads the studio. With extensive work in turn-based tactics and hints on a job posting, the studio could head in that direction with Star Wars, but it remains unclear as of right now. Most recently, EA reassured fans that this project is still in the works despite recent layoffs.
