Everything You Need To Know About Xbox Series X

We've rounded up every little bit of information about Xbox Series X, Microsoft's next-generation console.

The Xbox Series X is out now. Our review praised it as a powerful, refined Xbox console with tons of potential to unlock and a bright future ahead. Its counterpart, the Xbox Series S, is a similarly capable but compact version of the console with a few technical tradeoffs. If you're still waiting on your Series X to arrive or already have your brand-new console and are curious about its range of new features, we have you covered. In this roundup, you'll find everything you need to know about your new Xbox Series X, including technical specs, performance expectations, how backwards compatibility works, where to buy peripherals and other accessories, games, services, and more.

What Is Xbox Series X?

Word of a new Xbox console began circulating in early 2019. It was teased as a line of new consoles codenamed Project Scarlett. The official reveal of the Series X branding was unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2019, though a Microsoft spokesperson later clarified that this new generation of Xbox is simply called "Xbox," with Series X simply representing one of a planned series of systems this generation. This approach was further cemented with the reveal of the digital-only Series S in September 2020, which is also when both consoles received their official release dates of November 10.

When Did Xbox Series X Come Out?

The Xbox Series X was released on November 10, 2020.

How Much Does Xbox Series X Cost?

The Xbox Series X costs $500 USD. That price wasn't announced until about two months before the console's launch and about a week earlier than Microsoft originally intended, due to leaks. Microsoft reportedly took so long to reveal a price because it wanted to give potential buyers the chance to understand what the Series X really offered--though it is also likely that it waited until it was ready to reveal the lower-end Series S, to give consumers two price points right from the start.

If $500 is too much upfront, you also have the opportunity to purchase the Xbox Series X and a two-year subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate through a service called Xbox All Access. The bundle offer lets you pay off your Xbox Series X (or Series S), plus Game Pass, in 24 monthly installments of $35 per month. You'll end up saving about $19 in the long run, too.

Stupid question: could the Xbox X run next gen games at lower resolution? Because if it can, I can deal with 1080 and 720 any day :D

Seriously, the Xbox One X entered in the middle of the generation, could it have a kind of extended life cycle plan?

@santinegretePhil Spencer already confirmed Xbox One X will be supported well into the new genration cycle. However he did not say anything about the Xbox One S getting support.

@creepshow2: What kind of support are we talking about? I planned on getting X1X but I'll pass. It's not that much more of an upgrade over X1S, which I own. Future games will probably still run on all 3 XBOX One consoles. I can't see how Microsoft would exclude their older, weaker brother. We still have new games coming out for 360 even now.

@santinegrete: It should. If I bought an X I would be mad if it didn't. If they can get ps4 games running on switch they can get Xbox 2 games on xbonerx.

@santinegrete: My assumption is that they'll continue to support it. With the specs given above, the X should outperform the Lockhart model, at least as far as the GPU, which I think clocks in over 6 teraflops. The X is pretty powerful and should be capable of outliving the original 2013 model given it's substantially smoother performance and true 4k abilities.

@dr_derogatory: The X's weakness compared to next generation is the CPU rather than the GPU. Sure the GPU is 6 teraflops but the CPU is weak, and if Sony's plans for the PS5 are any indication of what Microsoft might be doing with their next console, next generation is going to provide enormous gains to CPU performance which should hopefully result in more complicated AI. And that's where the X would struggle to keep up.

Having games run at 60fps on next generation and 30fps on X would possibly mitigate for that though.

As for S... well... at least it can play 4K movies, right?

@dr_derogatory: Lockhart is probably just a driveless X with a solid state drive. The way Microsoft is going their consoles are just mini PCs that run the xbox operating system. Hopefully this is the case because I am a huge fan of backwards capability.

Both consoles are going to be essentially the same. They will both use a ryzen and Navi based Apu with gddr6 and an SSD.

The issue with Navi is it's power hungry if you want high performance and that means heat.

It would actually be nice if the Xbox used the architecture coming after Navi but even if it was read as a discreet GPU it's definitely not ready to be put into an APU.

So if Microsoft is going to beat Sony in terms of power they will need to enable more GPU stream processors and get them running at higher clocks. They would also need to overclock ryzen.

The good news is they can do this stuff after launch. With the original xb1 they overclocked the CPU and unlocked another core after launch so I expect the same for Xbox one...two (lol)

They could also add an ARM cortex mobile SOC which could handle Ray tracing which would take significant load off the GPU. There were rumors of this happening and it would be fantastic if true because it would allow better Ray tracing than anything in the RTX series.

Lastly they could use azure (their cloud compute platform) in games to render visuals or handle physics which would take a huge load off both the CPU and GPU but would obviously require an internet connection. Crackdown 3 was just a proof of concept but it's visual complexity in wrecking mode was held back because it had to work on the original xb1.

It's certainly going to be an interesting gen.

@teamparadox2k: I guess I'm unconvinced about the benefits of gaming's supposed lord and savior "Ray Tracing". While I could see them using cloud computing to handle physics, it seems unlikely that they could effectively use it to help rendering. I really want them to use cloud computing to drive better AI.

Imagine playing the next CoD with bots that you can fine tune their skills to how you want to play. Want to wreck noobs? Set the AI to dumb. Want to actually get better and challenge yourself? Set the AI to smart. Though I imagine creating an AI to play games as well as humans could be a whole project in and of itself. Still, having enemies that do more than crouch behind cover and peek their head up every 5 seconds so you can headshoot them would be nice. Not to mention a computer teammate that isn't a total waste if space.

@jsprunk: You're basing your decision off of exclusives? lol If they released at least twice a year then okay yeah but to buy a console for a few games within at least 6 years doesn't make much sense. Games you can beat in 2 days if you had nothing better to do.

@Jrxbarrett: If I play 99% of my games on PC, why would I ever buy a console that has zero exclusives? And I actually bought my first PS4 last year when God of War came out, so yeah my wishlist of games to play on it is decent considering that I spend weeks playing each game, not days.

@jsprunk: Your comment just makes me feel like you don't want to support MS but if you're on windows, you already are. Zero exclusives? Zero? lol okay... not many would be accurate. Also, E3 is next month. Give them a chance. They will already have the strongest console. Probably cheaper too

@Jrxbarrett: Yes, I supported MS when I purchased my copy of Windows 10 in 2014 for $25 and 90% of the games I play on my PC I get during sales for less than $15. I'm not going to go into all of the reason PCs destroy the Xbone, but the only reason I would ever buy an Xbone is for the exclusives.

What games are exclusive to the Xbone?

@jsprunk So are you saying that because they didn't mention the word "exclusive" in this Gamespot article, that it means that Xbox's next generation will never have any exclusives? Is that what you think and feel?

Honestly, they didn't mention the word "cheeseburger" either, but I am sure that people on the development team will be eating when they get hungry.

I guess we are all just not understanding the message you are trying to convey.

@lionheartssj1: that may be my plan too sir. Well, with current orientation of game development already (monetized fragments of content, only multiplayer, forced syncin' increasing load times) the choice could be just easier. The games I want to play aren't in the market anymore except for 1 or 2 every 3 years. This year was golden tough (Metro Exodus, Resident Evil 2).

@lionheartssj1: data sent back and forth can be made incredibly small with 8x compression. We are talking using maybe 10mb per hour on a game where the cloud is rendering some of the visuals and/or physics and it would only require 1mbps. You use more bandwidth visiting 2 websites. The average website is 10-20mb. So cloud compute stuff would enhance games significantly and use way less bandwidth than you think

The future is a mix of local rendering combined with cloud rendering. For example the cloud could render stuff that's far away at high detail while the console locally renders close stuff at high detail

Combing the 2 will lead to visuals that are unbelievably good and wouldn't require a very fast connection or data. Literally loading this page and making a comment used more bandwidth than an hour of a mixed cloud and local rendering system.

@teamparadox2k: Surely you speak of Snake Oil, sir!

Seriously though, I could see the horsepower benefits you're talking about, but I would still need to consider the downstream data vs. time usage to avoid data overages. Very large digital download games are already problematic. That aside, I would be interested in the telemetry on what you've articulated. Have you seen any of the numbers from the Google cloud Assassin's Creed experiment?

@lionheartssj1: yes, I was actually in Google's alpha testing with AC and it used roughly 400mb an hour and the game was running at 1080p30.

That being said if a game is using mixed rendering where the cloud helps render visuals while the console also renders visuals the amount of bandwidth used should be roughly 100mb or less an hour and I'm sure it would be optional. So if you turned it on your game would look better and likely run at a higher frame rate. The word is that the cloud would be in charge of physics which is just numbers so that would uses about 30mb an hour or less and it could also do things like render objects that are far away at high detail so you would have better draw distance and no pop or fade in. The console itself would render everything within X feet of the player. Doing so would mean significantly higher detail all around because it takes 50% of the rendering load off the local hardware.

Doing so should use about half the bandwidth per hour (or less) compared to streaming the entire game like stradia does.

Now this likely wouldn't be available at launch because developers would need to learn how to use the system BUT some tools are already in the SDK and they came from crackdown 3 which was really a proof of concept but it's visuals were held back significantly because it had to work on the original Xbox.

The possibilities are truly endless and they would work on a 1mbps connection and latency wouldn't be an issue because of "project Delorean" and the fact that microsoft literally has a data center in every part of the world essentially. In America everyone is likely within 100 miles of one

The most powerful console has seldom if ever won a console war within the lifespan of it's current generation.

PS beat N64 though the N64 was more capable

PS2 beat XBOX though the XBOX was more capable

XBOX 360 beat PS3 though the PS3 was more capable

PS4/PS4Pro is soundly beating XBOXOne S/X though the X is the most powerful Console ever made

That said, XBOX has still delivered the best version of the Multi-Platform games I like to play

@BadJujuEA: okay a lot of issues with this

N64 vs PS - while the n64 looked a lot cleaner and no Laos times practically the ps could have vastly more complex audio and environmental detail.

Xbox vs PS2 - a brand new console that isn’t proven vs a console that was already out for a year

Xbox 360 vs PS3 - at the end of the console cycle the PS3 sold more consoles. And yes the PS3 was more powerful from pure spreadsheet terms but was so hard to code for it actually made the 360 the more powerful console for a giant chunk of the console generation.

PS4/pro vs Xbox one/X - isn’t a fair comparison. The PS4 is straight up stronger than the One, and that’s when a massive sale lead happened. The pro vs X is a while mother story. The X is selling very well for Microsoft and the pro doesn’t really feel like a worthy upgrade all to much vs the base model.

All in all it comes down to whatever console launches the best, Cause then it snowballs from there. If all your friends has said console you will probably get it yourself.

Have you ever seen a console launch without games being shown.? I never have. Buts its 18 to 24 months away. So what are you expecting at this point?

And it is not needed to say that you won'y buy a console until you see some games. That is true for every person who ever buys a console.

You mean exclusives? Exclusives are 1% of the games market... Sony TOP10 will tell you all best games... all multi platform... please check it.

If you buy a console to play a game per year, then that's OK... LOOOOL
