Everything You Need To Know About Xbox Series X

We've rounded up every little bit of information about Xbox Series X, Microsoft's next-generation console.

The Xbox Series X is out now. Our review praised it as a powerful, refined Xbox console with tons of potential to unlock and a bright future ahead. Its counterpart, the Xbox Series S, is a similarly capable but compact version of the console with a few technical tradeoffs. If you're still waiting on your Series X to arrive or already have your brand-new console and are curious about its range of new features, we have you covered. In this roundup, you'll find everything you need to know about your new Xbox Series X, including technical specs, performance expectations, how backwards compatibility works, where to buy peripherals and other accessories, games, services, and more.

What Is Xbox Series X?

Word of a new Xbox console began circulating in early 2019. It was teased as a line of new consoles codenamed Project Scarlett. The official reveal of the Series X branding was unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2019, though a Microsoft spokesperson later clarified that this new generation of Xbox is simply called "Xbox," with Series X simply representing one of a planned series of systems this generation. This approach was further cemented with the reveal of the digital-only Series S in September 2020, which is also when both consoles received their official release dates of November 10.

When Did Xbox Series X Come Out?

The Xbox Series X was released on November 10, 2020.

How Much Does Xbox Series X Cost?

The Xbox Series X costs $500 USD. That price wasn't announced until about two months before the console's launch and about a week earlier than Microsoft originally intended, due to leaks. Microsoft reportedly took so long to reveal a price because it wanted to give potential buyers the chance to understand what the Series X really offered--though it is also likely that it waited until it was ready to reveal the lower-end Series S, to give consumers two price points right from the start.

If $500 is too much upfront, you also have the opportunity to purchase the Xbox Series X and a two-year subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate through a service called Xbox All Access. The bundle offer lets you pay off your Xbox Series X (or Series S), plus Game Pass, in 24 monthly installments of $35 per month. You'll end up saving about $19 in the long run, too.

Things To Do Before Getting An Xbox Series X

Before your Xbox Series X (or Series S) arrives, there are a number of things you should do to prepare, including moving Xbox One games to external storage, downloading and setting up the Xbox mobile app, double checking login credentials so you don't have any issues with two-factor authentication, and more. @merkkrai: agreed. Exclusives ruin the gaming market.

@nargg: you wouldn't say that if it was the other way around. Exclusivity stimulates competition which brings better quality games. Too bad X-Box didn't even bother these last couple of years

@bot101101: Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn. Only two games worth buying in my opinion.

@merkkrai: Really? Huh? The only reason I own a console is for exclusives. Which is why I dont own an xbox.

@UltimateBastard: I hate how people try to nullify the point of exclusives with "them being few u dummy", the great games are priceless and it's not like the console cannot run multiplatform games.

@xhawk27: no point, the service has few games and is not available everywhere. If not, I would have paid gladly to get my hands on God of War 2018 on PC.

@UltimateBastard: If you have Windows 10, you don't need an XBOX because all the XBOX exclusives also come to Windows 10. And the best part about gaming on a PC, is the improved framerate. In fact, it's the only reason I game on PC.

@ronaldmcreagan: Got that xbox gamepass there about a month a ago for a quid. Haven't actually used it yet, but for a quid you can't really complain. Sure as hell wasn't for the "epic" line up of xbox exclusives though.

@merkkrai: Why would I buy it if I can play all the games on a PS4 but have the exclusives of Sony as well? Microsoft needs to up their game, they've had feck all this generation.

@Terrorantula: Because it is the superior console. Both consoles have great exclusives but there are also countless great non-exclusive games. At the end of the day no one has time to play every game so you may aswell play what you can on the superior console which is the Xbox one X. Xbox controllers are far superior, power of the console is far superior, console is way better looking/far smaller and convenient, and the overall vibe of xbox is better than Playstation.

@merkkrai: Xbox One is laggy, the dashboard sucks and the UI is a mess, it is not the superior console. The only thing I like about it is the removable batteries, built in batteries suck.

@Terrorantula: I have owned an xbox for most of my life and about a year ago I bought the PS4 Pro to try it out. Just the other week I sold it to buy an Xbox one X and I couldn't be happier. There are just too many games these days to make exclusives a big deal so if you want to play games the best possible way, in a small form factor, top of the range controllers and in a responsive system the xbox is the obvious choice. All the little things like being able to see how long you play a game for on xbox just add to the more mature gaming experience the xbox offers.

@merkkrai: Dude, I have the VHS type Xbox One and I did not care for it's look then and now. I jumped on it on a convenient price with Gears of War 4. The only valid good point you make is the superior controller. Everything else is just irrelevant at the end of the day.

@merkkrai: and still it sells a LOT less.

Go figure!

Maybe the reason is the exclusives that you claim to be irrelevant?

Well, I don’t know, you are the expert afterall.

These specs look decent besides the hard drive size, but I suppose that's on us to buy a larger drive if we want it. I hope the CPU is a bit more impressive this gen. While efficiency can be achieved with newer tech, both the 360 and PS3 had higher CPU count than this gen. They could have been more efficient, but raw power wise, this gen didn't have the CPU push.

I'm excited to see what next gen brings, I've seen some really cool changes in CryEngine and Unreal Engine. I hope both Sony and Xbox have been working with engine developers to maximize some of the new graphical techniques video cards are coming out with.

@jumalan75: I thought VR would phase out like 3D, but I hear it thrives on Steam and PSVR has grown as well. While I think VR will become more prominent to enhance the gaming experience, until they can get a full integration of movement, I don't see it taking over completely.

Still there are some incredible VR games to experience out there.

Creeping their way to Matrick's original plan one step at a time. IP owners do not want anyone to buy their IP's, just rent and stream them. We will get closer and closer to that with each new gen as countries beef up their networks. When that time comes, my second hobbies of hunting and fishing will become my main hobbies and I'll leave gaming behind. I don't stream movies or music. Not about to stream video games. Plenty of other things I can do with my time. I absolutely hate software as a service. Paying monthly subs for Photoshop and Office etc. sucks. I don't do it for them and I'm not doing it for a gaming platform. Now they even have subscriptions for makeup and dental products and services. Heck, people are buying subs for mystery groceries that come in a box from who knows where? Seriously. These recurring revenue schemes are getting out of hand.

@bdrtfm: I've largely tapped out of the modern gaming scene. It's so boring. On the plus side, there are more old 8/16-bit classics (that demand skill) than anyone could finish in a lifetime.

@bdrtfm: IF console manufacturers eschew discs entirely you can bet one will come along 10 years down that’ll win us over with Nostalgia. Personally, I would prefer terms change and that the software belongs to you and can be exchanged via an online platform that pays royalties to the developers at every sale.

@consolehaven: The reason why MS is not numbering their consoles is because they are 1 number behind from Sony. It would be an awful marketing decision.

@consolehaven: I always thought it would have been cool to go off the 360 thing and call it 1080. However, I can see where that marketing would have backfired shortly into this gen.

@Jrxbarrett: I always thought so. One is just part of that dumb marketing when it was supposed to be a connect all for your media center.

That ship has passed, but I suppose they could always go with Xbox 4K next gen, which would play into it being their 4th Xbox and that it would be native 4k. I'm sure they'll definitely use something different though lol.
