After years of development, one major delay, and the changing of hands from now-bankrupt publisher THQ to Grand Theft Auto company Take-Two, Left 4 Dead creator Turtle Rock's 4v1 monster-hunting game Evolve has finally arrived.

No Caption Provided

The game has not been without controversy, as its extensive DLC plans have been called out as potentially exploitative by some. All the same, it's clear that publisher 2K Games has high hopes for the project.

"Evolve is an innovative and highly replayable experience that will define this console generation for years to come," 2K president Christoph Harmann said in a statement.

But how is Evolve holding up with critics? We've collected a series of review scores and editor opinions below. One thing to note, however, is that some sites have provided impressions only or provisional reviews due to the game's heavy network dependence.

For more on Evolve's critical reception, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

GameSpot -- 8/10

"As with Turtle Rock's Left 4 Dead, Evolve is best when you play with buddies; getting matched with a novice can lead to ghastly results if your newfound friend constantly seeks out the nonexistent 'I' in 'team.' It doesn't take long to whip a newcomer into shape, at least, meaning you can usually focus on Evolve's unique brand of greatness: the suspense of the hunt, the exhilaration of battle, and the drive to dominate Shear. Even Sasquatch would shiver at the dangers." - Kevin VanOrd [Full review]

The Escapist -- 4.5/5

"All in all, when Evolve is working well, it's one of the most enjoyable co-op experiences I have had in a long time. It looks great, the varied classes are all fun to play, and there's almost certain to be one that becomes your favorite. It's a great addition to Turtle Rock's resume, and a solid entry into the early release slate for 2015." - Ron Whitaker [Full review]

Shacknews -- 7/10

"Overall, it's a bit of a time investment, but after learning the ins-and-outs of hunting, Evolve starts to become a more engaging time-killer. Evacuation is a keen way to mix the game's otherwise uninspired game modes and its solid bot play means that I'll still be able to enjoy it even during down hours. The table for an enjoyable multiplayer session is set, whether jumping in with friends or getting more anti-social and devouring opponents as a lone monster. But considering some of the subpar game modes, I can't help but feel this package could have been something bigger." - Ozzie Mejia [Full review]

IGN -- No Review Score Yet

"Overall, I'm very impressed with Evolve. It's a smart, unique multiplayer experience, and the asymmetrical design gets me thinking about new creative tactics that don't even apply to any other game. I crave that kind of incentive and opportunity for inspiration, and I can tell that I'll be playing Evolve, and watching streams of it for quite some time." - Vincent Ingenito [Full coverage]

PC Gamer -- No Review Score Yet

"Evolve’s emphasis on skillful movement, spotting, and out-maneuvering your opponent make it an excellent competitive game. The Hunters and monsters have some of the most elegant, simple-but-deep mechanics I’ve laid hands on. And Evolve is one of the best-looking games on PC, blessed with splashy particle effects, smart UI, and monsters worthy of Pacific Rim." - Evan Lahti [Full coverage]

Kotaku -- Impressions Only

"Everything in Evolve is about evolution. The Monster eats to survive and to grow stronger. Each player individually plays enough to level up their characters across the board--unlocking new perks they can attribute per round, and unlocking new characters and their features. But what interests me most in Evolve is the evolution of the team itself, of players acting out their roles and learning to work together as a team. Because as soon as you lose sight of your goals, and as soon as you abandon a fellow hunter, that's when you lose control and you lose the fight. And that's the end of the relationship." - Tina Amini [Full coverage]

Polygon -- 8/10 (PROVISIONAL)

"Evolve offers something different, even if it doesn't always succeed. Evolve occasionally brushes against a real breakthrough for Turtle Rock, with its distinctive take on a different kind of multiplayer shooter. New territory always presents new problems, and Evolve doesn't always solve them. But it distinguishes itself from the pack of multiplayer options out there with the flair of something truly different." - Arthur Gies [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Impressions Only

"Left 4 Dead's replayability was obvious even during the first run through of every level--the way it toyed with players and how its systems crafted drama with alarming regularity. Evolve maintains some of these qualities--especially when you're surprised by marauding wildlife--but its best ideas are already repeating themselves." - Jon Denton [Full coverage]

GamesRadar -- No Review Score Yet

"It's not a game you can boot up and enjoy casually, mind. Constant communication is required to coordinate the Hunters different abilities effectively, meaning Evolve is much smoother when played with pals rather than randoms. My multiplayer matches so far have usually ended with battles against the Monster that devolve into massive clusterf**ks. But hey, they've been fun clusterf**ks." - David Meikleham [Full coverage]

Anyone notice this game is EXACTLY like Monster Hunter? You chase a monster in Monster Hunter, it runs away...starts eating other widelife...then you find it and fight it in the new area, then you try staggering it over and over so it doesn't run...is this not news to anyone?? It seems like they copied and pasted it and threw in guns at an attempt at making it a functioning MOBA.

The characters are even called hunters...and they kill monsters...

You could take any book, movie, game etc ever made and say it has similarities with anything, its human nature to look for patterns and familiar things.

Play the game, it doesn't play like a moba such as LoL or Dota, its a lot more accessible too.

Kids complaining because they can't afford it but still want it and the DLC skins are totally unnecessary and doesn't change a thing about gameplay.

I dont know what everyone is btching about! Have any of you ever played a "Tales of " Even before the game is released they usally have $20 of costumes and skin you can buy. Then a year later they have over $100 of DLC ranging from Costumes, Skins, Starter packs for synthesis, +10 level ups, 2X multriper, and ect and no one ever btches about it!

It doesn't affect the story! And from what I can tell this DLC doesnt affect the story or the game play. The extra hunters are balances and can be unlocked naturally in the game. You just pay to have them on Day 1. This isnt new either. They been doing this since the PS2 era and earlier for the Tales of series.

<< LINK REMOVED >> First off, the Hunters that you can buy are arguably better than the given Hunters. In a competitive scene, you'll want the BEST medic or BEST assault hunter, not one that doesn't have the right stats for fighting monsters. So, they give you the illusion of "choosing the way to play" by having all these optional purchases of hunters, but really one of them is actually the BEST one at their class (supporter, assault, medic, etc.). Also, you have to buy the monsters...this does affect gameplay because a lot of the aspects of the game are not available to players without internet or money to spare. So, it does affect how you EXPERIENCE the game because Golaith, somewhere along the lines, can be considered anti-meta if they apply balance changes. And if he is the only one you got, good luck.

The game is good for a very short while, but it utterly lacks what made L4D & L4D2 so replayable. In fact, just talking about L4D2 makes me want to go play it again.

Why are people so ret@rded. I'll spell it out. The extras you can purchase may not be pay to win. However it is very basic content that is available when the game launches.

For years and years we had unlockables in games. Skins, characters and other rewards. And now they cut pieces out of a finished product to sell individually, on top of the $60 price tag.

Some people out there will pay $120 for the complete game.

You're a fool if you support this. It could be the greatest game ever. (Which it certainly doesn't look like) and I will still never send these thieves one cent.

Clearly didn't read my comment. I acknowledge it isn't pay to win. And this is one of the worst cases of gamers getting ripped of on a AAA title I've seen yet. But it applies to all games that use this system

<< LINK REMOVED >> Jono, save it brah. oflows on a mindbender about Evolve. Just going by his comments to me, I shouldn't come to a Gamespot forum, to talk about a video game unless I buy it. I shouldn't bash Evolve, because I like PvP games like LoL and PS2, and I should prove the game's bad, by buying it and seeing for myself whether or not I'll like the game. And, I shouldn't comment on how d***ish developers are getting with paid DLC, because it's not related to in game effects.

I could say the same about you. You both are mouth frothing about cosmetic skins that you don't have to buy. Who cares about skins in a pvp game? They are totally irrelevant and why you think this was included content that they somehow are trying to charge you for is beyond me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because they are charging you, for what is normally free. if you go into a fast food store, order a meal, reach for some napkins and are told "That'll be $2.00 for four napkins" you'd be upset. if you went to a clothing store, and walked into a changing booth to hear "Your time in the changing room, will be added to the cost of your purchases" You'd be upset. IF YOU BOUGHT A CAR OFF A CAR LOT, AND THE DEALER CAME TO YOU AND SAID "And that will be $20 for the gasoline in the tank." YOU'D BE FRIGGIN UPSET!!

Car dealer thing maybe not the best example. All cars are sold at a base price with add ons costing extra. Better rims, stereo interior etc.

That's totally subjective, you should first try the game, 3 monsters and 12 hunters is already enough to get you busy for hundreds of hours.

The extra monster and hunters will come later for players who might want more, no one is pointing a gun to your head to buy the DLC.

If you don't like it, go put your money and time in another game.
