Fable Legends Officially Shuts Down, Refunds Available

"All stories have to end eventually."

Microsoft originally hoped Fable Legends could enjoy a 10-year lifespan, but the game never made it out of beta before it was canceled in March. The game's servers stayed online for beta testers following its cancellation, but have now officially gone offline today, April 13, as previously announced.

No Caption Provided

The ability to purchase Fable Legends' in-game currency was switched off in March. If you purchased the currency, called Gold, but never spent it, Microsoft will give you a refund. Instructions for how to get a refund can be found on the Lionhead Forums.

"From all of us here at Lionhead Studios, we would like to thank you for participating in the closed beta and being a part of the game's development," the developer said in a statement. "All stories have to end eventually, but the memories of Heroic triumphs and Villainous plots will last forever. Thank you for your support--you are all Legends!"

Fable Legends was in development for Xbox One and PC. It was originally scheduled to launch in 2015 through an open beta, but that never happened. Microsoft had high hopes for the free-to-play game, as the company said the title had the potential live for 5 to 10 years, with regular content coming to keep it fresh.

A recent report citing sources inside of Lionhead claimed that there have been talks about continuing development on Fable Legends. More specifically, Lionhead employees were asked if they'd be interested in continuing to work on the game as opposed to being let go with a severance package. One source indicated that there is the possibility of picking up development as an independent studio.

Asked about this possibility, a Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We aren't sharing additional details beyond that we have ceased development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees at Lionhead about our proposed closure of the studio as well."

Lionhead has been around for almost two decades, having been founded by Peter Molyneux after leaving his previous studio, Bullfrog Productions. Following Molyneux's departure in 2012, Legends was announced in 2013 as an online RPG and was later revealed to be a free-to-play game for Xbox One and PC.

With the onset of Fable 2, Lionhead went downhill with this franchise.
It took most of the charm of Fable 1 and changed it. (You always ended up as a lard ass... Unless you spent most of the game snacking on celery)
With Fable 3, they tore the rest of it out and gave us a steaming pile.
Then they gave us Fable Heroes... Followed by Fable: The Journey (Peter Molyneux is the father of lies in the gaming industry. "Not an on rails shooter" my hairy aunt)
Thereby telling us all what they thought of the Fable universe. They didn't care.
Then they tried to give us all what we wanted. A step back into the wonderful world I loved and still hold dear... Then proceeded to rip out all of the charm, again, and give us a steaming pile of crap.
Am I surprised to see Fable Legends gone? A little.
Am I happy that Legends is now dead? Oh, God, yes.

I'll admit, I didn't even know this was a thing. Either I need to pay more attention to gaming sites (not likely to happen, admittedly,) or things need to be advertised better.

It wasn't a good game as it was. They should have kept the single player adventure and made it still look as good as this game did look and it would have been a seller.

Such a shame, Fable had a couple of games that changed the way other games were made and this could have been the one to bring greatness back to the franchise.

RIP Fable.

Does this mean that players will be able to post vids from it if they were ever recording while playing? I'd like to see what could have been.

They made people pay to play during the beta? They're beta testing your game for you and you force them to pay still? Wow.

@brn-dn: They didn't make us pay to play. When they were testing the market they gave us gold to spend to test it out. Once all wipes were done that's when you could chose to spend money to buy gold. It was free to play and you could get anything that had an effect on gameplay by just playing the game.

It's disappointing to read the comments on this game. Most have never played it and yet they pass judgement about it. It was not Fable IV and for those that loved the Fable I,II,II I can understand why you are so bitter. However you missed out on a fantastic time. It was a lot of fun. @kloffolk, you're right the 4 v 1 is a challenge and no one had got it right, but Fable Legends was very close. It just needed a few tweaks here and there and the balance and matchmaking would have been just right. I played so many games both as the hero and villain and I loved it. I feel privileged that I got to play. I feel sad that so few got to experience the game. While Fable Legends may be gone the friendships formed will continue for years to come.

@kloffolk: The closure of the entire studio for one, let alone the canceling of the game, the destroying of the Fable franchise, the crapping on the fans. Then there's the Kinect. Then there's Quantum Break for PC. Then there's just about every other XB1 exclusive going to PC. Then there's delays, delays, delays. Then there's Phantom Dust disappearing like a fart in the wind. Then there's indie devs initially abandoning MS because of nonsense clauses. Then there's the XB1 getting hammered by the PS4 in virtually every way, from sales to performance to you-name-it. Then there's the XB1 launch (enough said). Then there's working with the NSA. Then there's the closure of a list of other first party studios. Then there's Xbox Live going down all the time lately. Then there's the fact that no big XB1 exclusives, what little exist, score in the 90s on metacritic. Then there's Gears on PC. Then there's.....you get the point. The list goes on and on.

Such a shame. Should have stuck with making Fable IV. Making a new IP is one thing, completely reinventing an established IP is quite another and doesn't always work out so well. I'd be willing to bet this game would have suffered from a serious lack of community within a few weeks of launch anyway.

@bdrtfm: I agree.

Ultimately, Microsoft overestimated the cachet of the Fable name. Many Fable fans lost interest in the franchise after the last core Fable game (Fable 3) left such a bad taste in almost everyone's mouth, Not sure why they thought spin-offs (Fable Journey, Fable Heroes, Fable Legends) were a good idea when their core Fable entries were already declining in both quality and popularity.

Visually, it looked great. I wasn't so sure about the gameplay. They should take these assets and at least use them somewhere else.

@amaneuvering: Seriously, I was looking forward to this one when I first saw it. Wasn't until they said it was getting the axe when I noticed testers talking about how it was just a MOBA. The game looks too good to scrap in its entirety.

@Red_Frog: While it had MOBA elements it was not a MOBA. It was 4 v 1 but with two different interfaces (over the shoulder or top down) depending on if you were a hero or a villain. Very fun to play as a villain and then go and play as a hero knowing the tricks the villain could employ. Made for some intense and strategic matches.

Personally, I think that after Evolve's disappointing post-launch sales and rapid player drop-off, the industry realized that these asymmetrical 4-v-1/team-centric type games don't work on a broad scale. Conceptually, they sound awesome. In practice, not so much. Refer to Rainbow Six Siege as another similar example.

Why? Because these games have a fundamental design problem; teamwork and communication are integral parts of the experience. Therefore, it is best played with a group of your friends. However, it's not always easy to get a bunch of your friends together to play at the same time. So what happens? You end up playing with random people instead, which diminishes the overall quality of the experience.

Basically, this genre was a fad that died out faster than the Guitar Hero/Rock Band music genre.

@kloffolk: I don't agree with this. There have many teamwork only orientated games that were very successful. Left 4 Dead, for example, and Mass Effect 3's multiplayer was considered a money maker for years (it's still around too, surprisingly).

Evolve sucked just because it plain sucked: the maps were way too big, the hit and run tactics meant you spent most of your time searching, and nobody like the DLC plan. It has nothing to do with the teamwork concept.

@Barighm: The big difference is that the games you mentioned are 4-player PvE. Evolve (and Fable Legends) were 4v1 PvP.

For Left 4 Dead and ME3, teamwork was only essential on the hardest difficulty levels. Lower difficulty levels could even be completed successfully solo. I'm not saying you're wrong about Evolve sucking for other reasons as well, but there is a core difference between it and the games you mentioned.

@NoahRoalson: Oh, I agree with you. The major difference, however, is that games like Battlefield have other modes that can be fun and aren't built around the idea of requiring teamwork. With an asymmetrical game, there is really no other option; it's teamwork or bust.
