Facebook Civilization should debut 'this summer'

Sid Meier tells CNN that Civilization World's debut is just weeks away, offers details about gameplay mechanics, design.

With critical darling Civilization V having been out since last September, Sid Meier has been focusing on his next effort: Civilization for Facebook. Now, nearly four months after the start of the alpha test for the title, called Civilization World, the legendary game designer has offered cable news network CNN some details on both its progress and its game design.

Facebook gamers will be able to enter Civ World this summer.
Facebook gamers will be able to enter Civ World this summer.

Of foremost importance to those wanting to play Civilization World, Meier said he expects the game to launch sometime this summer, a year and a half after the project was first announced. He said the long development cycle stemmed from having to combine the turn-based gameplay mechanic of a standard Civilization game with the more gradual pace of a Facebook title.

Having various players contribute to a game at different times "fundamentally changes the mechanics of the game because if you are not there at the same time as other players, there needs to be ways of leaving messages, ways of communicating. Things have to happen at a pace where everybody can be included."

Civilization World's hybrid nature will also require some adjustment from traditional Civ players. Each game's world will consist of 200 people, with individual players trying to win victory in one of the previous game's spheres of influence: military, science, economy, or culture. However, the game will also ask players to cooperate with one another to advance in the game.

"You have your own city to manage and you can do all kinds of stuff [solo]," Meier said. "However, the most successful players will be those that can also work together with other players."

@Phil-teh-Pirate Actually, spells it "Calibur", as Namco does. I think maybe it's supposed to be a play on the word "Excalibur". @radioactive1wiz Yes, that's true... I do prefer 4 anyway.

@Phil-teh-Pirate Well, I stand corrected. I am aware of the alternate spelling in many words that you British folks use versus American English, but I wasn't aware of civilization vs civilisation. For sake of argument, I'll follow your concession on Civilization being a proper noun when related to the series.

@parrot_of_adun Yes but, and it's a big point, they are still there, months after release. They shouldn't have been there on release, but months after? That's made me lose all faith in them. Civ 4 is better. Mods ftw.

@Draxargh Well pardon my English. In England it is indeed spelled as 'Civilisation' but just for you I will concede as its is its title, I'll call it Civilization. Just like Soul Caliber (Calibre) and Medal of Honor (Honour) and whatever other word you care to mention.

@Phil-teh-Pirate - This is exactly my view on it. The further we get from local multiplayer the less social gaming gets.

As much as I love the franchise, I still wouldn't want to be nagged by FB friends to contribute to the game. IMO the social media is for updates and there are other, better venues for gaming.

@Phil-teh-Pirate Would you spell Civilization right, for Civilization? I really doubt it'd be a 2 week wait per turn. The level of addiction that people have for Facebook, add the level addiction of Civilization, I think each game would last about 2 weeks. And if it can be interacted with through the mobile platforms like iOS and Android, that would really keep it flowing, but that might be a while from now and depending on its success. And this definately isn't Farmville.

1 Turn every 2 weeks. Invite friends to level up. Pay $5 for technology. I would do anything for Civilisation. But I won't do that... "Social" gaming needs to end. Real Social gaming is getting your pals together on the weekend and playing Burnout, hitting your friends Rock Band set after a night of drinking, slumping into a bean bag next to your mate and fighting in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Edition. Sitting in front of a computer inviting friends of friends of friends you met for 5 minutes to help you pick strawberries or some crap is NOT SOCIAL. Its like saying "I'm being social" whilst staring at the postman from the window to see if he brings mail.

In all honesty, I'm kind of excited for it after reading the slightly more in depth review at EyeGeeEn. If they do it right, could be a lot of fun, and break the mold of traditional Facebook games. Turning Civ into an almost MMO experience makes complete sense, although I'm worried at what will be sacrificed (It was bad enough losing religion in Civ V, now losing actual countries and everyone being a city-state, I'm not so sure of) I hope they don't stream-line it too much. I'm optimistic, especially since Sid Meier is working on the project specifically. Of course, it'll be a gamble given it's a Facebook game, but given the social nature of the "platform" and social nature of civilization, Civilization definately has some potential. I can't wait to genocide the world with the Axis of Freedom.

@radioactive1wiz They have fixed a number of them though, that's worth at least . But yes, I know there are a good number of problems left. The important part is that they haven't completely abandoned it.

@Parrot_of_Adun Updates? Yes. Friend never said there were no updates. Simply that they should fix the god damned bugs. A rather valid point, truth be told.

If they only spent the time fixing all the bugs, crashes and various problems in Civ 5...before working on other projects.

I'm actually a little excited about this. The only thing that gets me worried, though, is that it sounds like we'll be forced to naggingly send game requests to everyone on our friend lists to progress (something that has made me hate Facebook's games).

Maybe the reason why Civ V was such fail was because they were spending all the effort on this.

So Sid Meier will put Civilization on Facebook, but he won't put it on the Wii? Nice.
