Factor 5 developing solely for PlayStation 3

Onetime Nintendo loyalist and Rogue Squadron-maker now devoting itself to Sony's next-generation console.

As the dust settles from last week's E3 in Los Angeles, a few stories that slipped into the background by the din of gaming's biggest event have begun to emerge. One such story concerns Factor 5, the developer of the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series.

While speaking to GameSpot sister site News.com on the last day of E3, Julian Eggebrecht, president of the San Rafael developer Factor 5, said his company is now creating games solely for the PlayStation 3. "I was shocked by how powerful the new consoles are," he told News.com. "They should really free our development." Eggebrecht said the power of the PS3's Cell CPU was the deciding factor, as it will let Factor 5 create games closer to virtual reality.

Eggbrecht's comments come little more than a year after Factor 5, which had developed almost exclusively for the GameCube, announced it would no longer make games for the console. At the time, he downplayed speculation the studio would abandon Nintendo. "We are extremely excited about both DS and GCNext, so any talk of us abandoning Nintendo platforms altogether is just not true," he told GameSpot, apparently speaking too soon.

They must feel like idiots. They gambled on the Cube last gen which came in 3rd place (as far as installed base), and now they gambled on what they probably thought was going to be the Winner in the PS3 and that again came in 3rd place.

I wonder if they will make a RS for the ps3? I would doubt it, what with licensing and all but its possible. If so it would be amazing, but I wish they were a little more stable in their loyalties

Damn... Factor 5 is an excellent company in terms of quality, I love the Rogue Squadron games and it's a shame we most likely won't see a RS4 for the Wii

Gee, this sounds a lot like that Rareware. Swearing their undying loyalty to Nintendo and the GameCube, but then jumping ship after Star Fox Adventures hits stores. Whatever.
