Fallout 4 Graphics Upgraded With First PC Mod

Slight update to textures and lighting applied; See comparison screenshots inside.

Ahead of the long-awaited Fallout 4 release date, one enterprising fan has already created a PC mod for the game that will improve its graphics.

The Enhanced Wasteland Preset, created by a modder going by the alias 'Razed,' is said to improve the open-world game's lighting and textures with a mod file that appears to be less than one megabyte in size.

According to the mod's description, "the goal of this preset was to slightly add more vibrance to the wasteland environment in Fallout 4 and make it appear less washed out. There is also usage of other settings that I think make the game look better."

A series of screenshots, demonstrating the extent of the graphics comparisons, can be found below.

Ever since Fallout 4 was first revealed, two weeks prior to E3, the game's graphics has been a topic for debate. In August, Bethesda marketing chief Pete Hines responded to graphics criticisms, saying it "definitely doesn't upset us."

"I mean, certainly it ought to look and feel familiar," he said. "If you played Fallout 3 you ought to be able to see things that are recognizable or similar or whatever. Because we didn't make a completely different game. But at the same time, when you're playing it it’s a mix of familiar and different. There are things that are the same and there are things that are very different."

Fallout 4's release date falls on Tuesday, November 10 across Australia, the UK, and North America. GameSpot's Fallout 4 review can be found through the link.

Color grading is nice, but I like how the original looks at the moment. What I need however is a high resolution texture pack. Texture is probably the major graphical inconsistency in the game.

And this is why the PC version is, and will always be, the definitive version of this game. When I saw that Bethesda didn't update the graphics engine, I cringed at first, but then I realized that ALL the awesome mods that kept me playing playing Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 will in some way exist for this game as well. Here goes another 100-200 hours of my life.

Until a full re-texture and enb-Shader mod is applied, there isn't going to be much of a difference. But if GFX is the only thing that Bethesda failed to impress us with, I'm OK with that. My main concern is the fact that this game seriously does look like a slightly prettier Fallout 3. It still seems to suffer from the same idiosyncrasies of Bethesda's previous open world engines.

@BuzzLiteBeer: I think a complete new engine is required for there to ever be any real change, maybe the next Fallout will finally be the one that people have been waiting for? This game is still awesome, although it is as you say a slightly prettier Fallout 3.

The only meaningful change appears on screenshot #7, the rest just removed the grittier tone.

I think the reason for this article is to show how quickly a mod has come out, rather than how good (or not so...) the mod is.

well if I change the color tone of my monitor I can achieve this as well :P Or just wear other glasses :P

I don't know why gamespot is adiment to make such a fuss of this. It'll just enable more graphics whoring for nothing.

It's a universal SweetFX/ReShade preset, and a poor one at that. Are we really reporting on minor mods such as these now? Is PC gaming really so unfamiliar to this site that it can't differentiate a shader overlay and a texture or lighting mod?

SWEET FX is a suite of post processing shader effects - Not really a mod, its usable for almost all modern pc releases. This is just an early preset for FO4. You can change SMAA anti-aliasing, sharpening and tweak the color, gamma, exposure and more, so those saying its just a saturation tweak really underestimate the power of this tool. Like ENB's it can make a noticeable improvement to image quality

The game is visually underwhelming, like skyrim, no amount of mods is going to change that.

@zerofrust: I found that the mod that made the colors more saturated and outspoken helped a lot for Skyrim, it looked pretty nice at the time. I'd like the same for Fallout 4.

@Damnation_6:

I don't know what it is with Bethesda and graphic engines but they don't give a fck about it lol. No amount of overhaul is going to turn a "meh" into a "nice". I have made armors/weapons and creatures mods for skyrim and it just saddens me to see my work looking like sht in game. I wouldn't mind having something remotely looking like CDPR RedEngine 3 or even 2(with metal looking like actual metal and proper cloth animation support).

@zerofrust: And that is why The Witcher 3 should probably be GOTY over Fallout 4, CD Projekt Red has shown to be more competent game engine wise and probably even design wise (even with the perceived "Downgrade" in mind). But I can't say anything about the story just yet...tho I doubt they will be beating CD Projekt Red on this too.

CD Projekt Red has given most if not all other household (western) RPG makers a run for their money...the other studios will have to step up their game.

@dcno07: Only perk I can think of is the fact that, if you got a retail copy, you can sell it off again when you are done with it on console, not the case on PC. But no...don't expect any graphics improvement mods other then some filters.

That's as much as Mod as me going into a game's options and changing my gamma setting. Honestly, what is this; a small saturation shift and an opacity reduction of the colorizing effect in the game world?

Well not really a graphics update as much as a slight color and contrast correction. Even so, it depends on taste. but fear not, there will be HD textures and ENBs very soon.
