Farming Game Lets You Play as Women for First Time

In Farming Simulator 17, you'll also be able to hire women to help you on the farm.

Farming Simulator 17 releases later this year, and with it, it brings new vehicles and machinery, animals, crops, and mods on consoles. On top of that, you'll be able to play as a woman for the very first time in the series' history.

Focus Home Interactive announced its new push for diversity in a press release, where it said "the ability to play as a female farmer reflects the diversity and ever-expanding industry of agriculture." When players start a game, they'll be able to choose their character's gender and customize their clothes.

Additionally, you'll be able to hire women workers. Hired help can be assigned to tasks like plowing, fertilizing, and harvesting, so you can divert your focus to other areas of the farm.

Farming Simulator 17 releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25.

Many games have been making a push for diversity. We recently saw Don Bradman's Cricket 17 add women to the game, while last year's FIFA 16 was the first time women's teams had been included in the series.

Uncharted 4 director Neil Druckmann recently said that it is "absolutely" crucial to have characters who are women and people of color in his games. He believes that diversity should be one of the core pillars of game development, alongside gameplay, graphics, and story.

First off...big f-in deal. Second, I'm not sure why every company and corporate entity feels the need to pander to feminist groups and minorities. If someone creates a thing, it's their thing. Not your thing. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

@Gravity_Slave: Well that's the problem, isn't it? Nobody will buy their product, if there isn't any options. So companies want to add diversity so more people will buy their product. There are women farmers in real life. So why can't there be any in the game?

Even if they decided to add it in the game... why brag about "diversity"? People are tired of companies that use that word to brag about how progressive they are. You don't need to brag about diversity to add a woman in a video game.

Of course games like Farming Simulator are still discriminating against people like me who identify as attack helicopters.

Oh. My. God! In OTHER news, Harvest Moon (the original series that changed its name to Story of Seasons which is the original Japanese name), a JAPANESE video game, allowed you to get a boy/man version or a girl/woman version WAY before these guys did this (there's not enough space on a cartridge to fit all the romance options in them, however, why they didn't include such options on CDs/DVDs is pretty weird...).

These guys are frea-kin SLOW! And unlike Harvest Moon, it's a modern realistic farming game (or more precisely, a SIMULATOR), so it SHOULD HAVE BEEN ACCURATE from the start. The fact they add women now only seems weird. I smell conspiracies! Or maybe... prospiracies...!

They made 17 Farming Simulator games? Talk about milking a franchise lol. Activision and EA probably look at the number and get jealous. Anyways, my grandparents had a farm and whenever we visited, I stayed indoors baking delicious treats while the men worked outside. I would hate doing all that physical labor.

@Moonco: Despite it's actual meaning, now seeing many people who use it as a general term to refer to people. It's now pretty gender-neutral, so get with it dude :D

In previous games, hiring workers was simple key/button press. Will we have to choose which gender of worker to hire now or will it be at random? I'd prefer random myself.

cool and all, but does it have any impact on the gameplay? I'm going to guess that no, so how is this news worthy?

It's been around a long time, and while I agree, it really isn't news, I'm surprised it wasn't in there to begin with.

And in the interests of realism I assume the women workers don't get as much done as the men?

Hey it's genetics, don't shoot the messenger.

@Moonco: It would definitely add diversity and realism that SJW are clamoring for - just not in the way they want.
