Following the news last week that Mad Max: Fury Road's Charlize Theron was joining Fast and Furious 8, it's now been confirmed that another series newcomer, Scott Eastwood, has come aboard.

Theron plays the action movie's main villain. However, there is no information yet as to the role Eastwood, the son of legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, will play in the film.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Fast & Furious 8 Adds Series Newcomer Scott Eastwood for New Character

Deadline first reported the news, before Eastwood himself tweeted about his involvement.

The best-known actors from the Furious franchise include Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Paul Walker. Walker died in a 2013 car crash, and Furious 8 will be the first entry in the series he won't appear in.

Over the years, Universal has added to the Furious franchise's roster of actors, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, and Jason Statham all appearing in 2015's Fast and Furious 7.

Furious 8 is just the latest high-profile project for Eastwood, as he'll also be seen in this summer's Suicide Squad and Oliver Stone's Snowden in September. Eastwood also has a role in Ben Affleck's 2017 crime movie Live By Night.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that there would be at least two more films in the Furious franchise, with parts 9 and 10 due in 2019 and 2021.

Star and producer Diesel's plan for more movies was revealed last year, when he stated: "I promised the studio I would deliver one last trilogy to end the saga." The actor has also hinted that additional spinoff movies could be made, focusing on some of the individual characters from the action series.

Fast & Furious 8 opens on April 14, 2017.
