Fast and Furious Spinoff Movies Are in the Works
More Fast More Furious.
It is rare for a long-running film franchise to still be breaking records with its seventh instalment, but that's the case with the Fast and Furious movies. This summer's Furious 7 was the biggest movie in the action series to date, and not only has producer/star Vin Diesel promised another three sequels, it now looks like various spinoff movies are in the works too.
Diesel has told Variety that the team behind the series are already working on taking it beyond Furious 10. "We've written out story lines for various characters," he said. "We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class."
This news was confirmed by Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley, who commented: "We're certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now. It's an ensemble cast and there's room to bring characters in and out."
In September there was some confusion over who would direct Furious 8, which is due for release in April 2017, with series directors James Wan and Justin Lin reportedly turning down offers to continue. It has since been confirmed that Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Gray would take on the job.
Furious 7 has to date earned more than $1.5 billion worldwide, and currently stands as the fifth biggest film ever made.
