F.E.A.R. Hands-On: The PS3 Gets Scary

One problem - NO HEADSETS! Its a real shame because the game could be so good, it is let down by this and means i will not buy it

my question here is: so long after the original came out and became such a major hit, is it worth buying an overhash for a better fps rate, higher res and a little new content. all that just doesnt add up to $60 price tag. think i'll go back to blowing ppl in Resistance online untill something better comes out!

Same here. I saw it at EB games, really wanted to get it but I have the PC version... still thinking about it though.

This is a port and not given a ground up treatment so it's not surprising that its going to be 720p, I would hope more than 30 frames. I wouldn't expect them to spend too much time optimizing an older title. @livewire29 wow you need to research before you post. The 360 simply scales to an chosen output, but it doesn't render in 1080p, there is a big difference. In fact several titles have been released on the 360 that aren't even rendered at 720p, they are scaled after the fact. These titles are PGR3, COD3, and THP8. << LINK REMOVED >> Anyway 1080p is not that big of a deal and Sony bit off more than they could chew promising it in this generation. 720p should be the focus with nice textures and good framerates. For those that are going to shout the PS3 doesn't have a scaler....wrong: << LINK REMOVED >> They most likely didn't enable access to it in the begining to keep developers honest and prevent what happened on the 360 to happen on the PS3. Good forbid a game wasn't rendered at 1080p on the PS3 and was just scaled up Sony would catch even more hell, like they are in this thread.

This sucks. The PS3 is having a more hard time to work on shaping up the graphics for its games. I think that it's the Cell Processor's fault since it's a very complicated thing for developers to work with and this doesn't allow them to go any further than they can. Lets hope that the PS3 can catch up to the 360's graphics. Also, I've noticed that not many games have taken use of the Sixaxis function. What the hell are those developers thinking? I think that they should start working towards the better 1080i or 1080p graphics and even the Sixaxis function because if they don't, it will only make the ports seem less good than the Xbox 360 versions. Sony needs to get a lot of work done on all these games and on how they can push the Video Game Industry further. Get to it, Sony!

its not just 1080p, point is that considering the success of the game i am sure as hell that it wont sell and wont really offer anything new, or at least enough for ppl to buy. this would equal to releasing ANY super-hit from PS2 on PS3 cuz u can amp up the graphics and add 2 maps and maybe a weapon or two...waste of time ppl!

it is very much a sony issue. if the ps3 can't handle fear in 1080p than we don't have much to look forward to in terms of high end power like has been promised. blast factor is not a good indication of strong 1080p performance. i'm sure the ps3 could run quake 3 pretty well. too bad quake 3 isn't the greatest thing anymore. blast factor is worthless. lets see some real power!

The PS3 can/could run a full 1080p out of the gate. The issue is what the Developers are doing with their games. Blastfactor was 1080p 60fps and I believe Lair is slated for 1080p 30fps as well. This is not a Sony issue, please understand your technical facts before you blast away. It all comes down to money. Cheers!

What is up with the 720 p on the ps 3 games.. 720 p looks good, 1080 i and 1080 p looks way better then 720 p... What is up with the ps3 games, alomost all the ps3 games only have 720 p.. When xbox 360 has 480 p, 720 p, 1080 i, and 1080 p..... MS is giving everyone a chance to get how the full games look on there console, when ps3 is only giving us 720 p... When not everyones HDTV's does not have 720 p... What they are going to make us go buy another HDTV that supports 720 p or even 1080 p... Sony is doing us wrong

Hang on i thought the ps3 was ment to be more powerful than the 360 So why can it only run at 720p when the 360 can do it at 1080p (after a patch) If so thats laughable because then if developers are having to cut games back to 720p less than 6 months after launch whats going to happen in 5 years time. Maybe 480i!! lol

and it gives you the chance to explore what life is like as one of the canon-fodder guys in the game I couldn't understand this part... :-/

Looks great but ive already got the 360 version so no need for me to get it. but seriously someone needs to give a freakin medal to the guy who made the particle gun, its the first gun in ages that has made me laugh and laugh and laugh. seriously its hilarious watching blood splatter over walls while a blackened skelton smolders on the ground.

I really dont like it when they put exclusive content on different consoles. Different exclusive content from each other is worse. I dont want to have to buy two consoles and two of the same game for an extra mission that should by all rights be available to me anyway. Especially if the other console cannot do the game justice, as was the case with Resident Evil 4

YES! Finally a decent FPS for the PS3 (other than resistance). Now I just need to get a PS3... lol.

I heard rumors about a new shotty for the PS3 version, in addition to the VK-12. This one is almost the same although it has a faster rate of fire and what not... Kind of a rip-off for us 360 boys (and girls)... Oh well! Have fun!

You PC freaks are a little over the top. And don't get me wrong I own and love PC's but chill out fellas/gals... There are things called exclusives. For example PS3 will have Sony exclusives, 360 will have Mircosoft, Wii will have Nintendo, and the PC will have theirs... but u need all systems including a PC if you want to enjoy the whole picture. Unfortunately not everyone has the kind of money to grant them that gift. All the talk about game consoles being outdated and blah blah blah... PC guys... your PC is out of date as I write this. That's the problem with PC's their cost is high and they are updated every couple of months if not sooner. So unfortunately you will always be outdated.... So stop talking that ying yang and let these guys/girls enjoy their first shot at a great game PERIOD.

Morning/Afternoon and Evening! :) Have this on the 360 and its a very good FPS. Well worth you ladies and gents splashing out on this for your PS3 if you don't have it on another system. Top class shooter, graphically not fantastic by any meens, theres far better out there, but moody with plenty of action. I wouldn't go with it for the FEAR factor, hardly scary stuff, but decent enough story line and good playability. Still a couple of scenes might make you jump as it does have a few supprises up its sleeves. Certainly keep you going for a while if your hanging on for Killzone. Has a pretty tight multiplayer game on the 360, which offers quite a bit of replay value after the campaign. So if it carries well to the PSN then should keep you entertained for quite some time after finishing it.

that game is so scary and when the girl out it even get worse the girls is like the devil it so scary you going to need the courage to play it!!!

Whats this ridiculous talk. PCs arent made for gaming... and i suppose Alienware is making completly outdated hardware then... You need to understand that for serious gaming the PC is the only way to go. FEAR is old. There is little replay value. The story is good, but aside from multiplayer frag fests its just not worth buying for a console. Whether people delude themselves in an effort of consolation, with the knowledge that their hardware is underpar, is besides the point. PCs are better than consoles. If you own a second hand computer with some no name graphics card then sure, go and play FEAR on your shiny console. Just dont delude yourself, PCs are always going to be better.

whats with all the "PCs arnt for gaming but consolese are"... well yes clever little boy but its like saying a 1litre 50bhp car is designed for driving but that 4litre 600 pickup truck over ther cant go quicker. you right in one aspect of yes Game consoles are made for games, mainly because they wont be programed or used for anything else. But you need to understand that the hardware in the 360/PS3 is outdated by PC's counterparts. Consoles are more efficent than that of pcs with memory and GPU's usage but thats are far as it gets. One day which was last year PC's overtook once again. You come out sayin Im gonna sit in front of my big tv while playing mario then wow god for you ya no those tvs come with PC inputs aswell so we can also get a 360 controler if needs be sit in front of our tvs with beter performance and with crysis comin out a much more "next gen experince". p.s. PC's make your games so of course they can run them and FEAR's 2 years old, be serious when ya go on about saying how good ya new console is playing a 2 year old game =]

guys i cant belive it you guys are soo wrong that fear look better on xbox360 just wait till it finnaly releases and rpg fan i will tell you one thing computer are not made for gamming but gamming consoles are and 30 fps on a computer moniter will never be as good a on a tv screen and plus do you 2 teraflop of procesing power is more than what you can imagagen on a pc and if you want to be stuck in your room in forn of a moniter then go ahead let me tell u someting while you are in you room i will be in my tv lounge with a wireless controler on a high definition tv with 4 foot tall speakers and a wofer and enjoying the sound and graphics while u will be just holding or scroling a mouse and not even be i half a foot away from your "moniter" thats all

Nowdays, you can build a PC for about 600 that can run FEAR @ ~30FPS AMD athlon64 X2 3600+ Brisbane PC Chips Nforce6100 mobo Sapphire x1950pro 256 1GB Buffalo DDR2 667 WD 160GB SATA 300 HDD Lite-On Dual-Layer DVD burner Broadway ATX 600W PSU AS5 thermal paste Rosewill 2-tone ATX case Artic Cooling Freezer 64 And a few fans total: $508.08 w/o shipping I'm pretty confident that this system could run FEAR @ 1280x1024... If you made a few different hardware choices you might be able to have a little higher performance w/ just a slight price increase. Not to mention if u spent a few more bux on a higer-end mobo and RAM you could probly OC it pretty high.

Oh my... what have i got myself into posting here :/ lol The CPU in the ps3 is "superior" to any desktop or server CPU currently available to the public for number crunching. I don't think the ps3 CPU even uses x86 code like Pentiums, C2Ds, Athlons, Opterons, Xenons, etc. @Haliogen I stated the ps2 came out b4 the GC or Xbox and sorry if I didn't clearly imply what you said. However, it's hard for me to accept the idea that the PS2 was processing/graphics power wise superior to the GC. look at RE4. It looks ok on the ps2, and awesome on the GC. now ports don't always look their best on non-native systems so perhaps it's not a great example. RPGfan needs help :p He talks as if everything he says is absolutely true and should be common knowledge. He has some good points, but they aren't put together very well, and some stuff is clearly false or just doesn't make sense. No meaning to "flame" you, just stating an observation. First of All one Geforce8800gtx is about same price as PS3,but 3 times stronger.If u dont belive read gamespot's article about that... PS3's processors is smthing like 3ghz intel pentium,u have bether procesors on PC + u can overclock them 30 FPS cannot look bether on 700p TV than 120 FPS on 1900xsmthing on PC with 16x quality antialising,16x quality antistropic filtering,everything on maksimum,bether loading times if u have good hard disk,(hard disk can go up to few terabytes,on ps3 its no more of 60 gigs,mybe later 120),RAM of ps3 is no more than 700+ on u can get 5 gigs of ram lol or smthing like that,ps3's graphic card is so old... Just another port. Nothing to get excited about. However if you havent played it, then it is probably worth getting. Its an above average FPS in my opinion but nothing special.

So, is Gamespot saying that this will be a great port?

To DesertRat801, first off the Playstation 2 was superior to the Gamecube but not the Xbox. Secondly the fact that the Playstation 2 came before the Xbox would logically mean that the Xbox had better graphics as they were more modern non? Yes i agree that the screenshots don't look better than the Xbox or PC versions but a game ported from the PC to the PS3 is never going to use the PS3's processor to it's full potential. Oh and finally, please correct your spelling before you post you "fanboi".

DesertRat801, PC gaming has ALWAYS been far ahead of console gaming. That is if you have the money. I don't, so a PS3 suits me just fine, and on the matter of games going to be x-box ports, I honestly don't care, I'll save up and get a 360 also for Gears of war. Why the hell do most people here seem to lack the capability of thinking "Damn, too much right now, but if I cut back on going out and work a little over time, I can have it in a few months!" like me. I pay bills, I live alone, but apparently it's oh so difficult for people to just save. C'mon people, who gives a crap which is better, just save and get the ones YOU want, not what other people want.
