Fed Up With Switch 2 Scalpers, Nintendo Fans Are Fighting Back

Nintendo fans are mobilizing to report scalpers on sites like eBay.

Like most sought-after devices, there has been some concern that the Switch 2 could end up in the crosshairs of scalpers ahead of its launch in June. While some people are already attempting to sell the console at a higher price on sites like eBay, Nintendo fans are stepping in to report these listings en masse.

On the Nintendo Switch 2 subreddit (as spotted by GamesRadar), there are numerous posts detailing the war on scalpers. Currently, eBay's rules state that an item may not be sold unless it can be shipped out within 40 days, and at the time of writing, 55 days remain between now and the Switch 2 launch on June 5. Nintendo fans have been reporting these listings as soon as they pop up, and the subreddit is full of tips and tricks detailing how people can help out.

Back in February, Nintendo spoke about its preparations for the Switch 2 launch, including taking all "possible measures" to discourage scalping. "We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date," Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said back then. "We are making preparations."

One of Nintendo's measures for fighting back against scalpers is that it will sell the Switch 2 through its store, but potential buyers will have to meet certain criteria to be eligible to purchase the console. People who have had a Nintendo Switch Online subscription--that they purchased--for at least one year and who have at least 50 gameplay hours on their profile will be given preorder priority.

While the Switch sold quite well following its launch in 2017, the COVID pandemic and the global semiconductor shortage saw demand for the console surge. As a result, scalpers were emboldened to grab as much stock as possible and resell it for a profit. The late-2020 launch of the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles was also beset with stock shortages that scalpers exacerbated.

The Switch 2 is currently available for preorder across the world, but it's a different story in the US and Canada. Preorders in the US were supposed to begin on April 9, but following US President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs, these plans were put on hold. Earlier this week, Trump temporarily lowered the tariffs to 10% but has since escalated his trade war with China by increasing their tariffs to 125%.

What this means for the Switch 2 release in the US remains to be seen, as it was reported that Nintendo shifted production to Vietnam and Cambodia to get ahead of the tariffs. The tariff rate for these countries was set to 46% and 49%, respectively, but the new 10% rate in place will expire on July 8. Analysts predict that the $450 price tag for the base model Switch 2 won't be changed, as they believe that Nintendo will ship even more Switch 2 units to its warehouses in the US.

Scalping isn't illegal, just scummy. To best combat scalping, Nintendo should be making enough fukn consoles from the get-go.

Come on, Nintendo! Take a look at the 3DS and PS3 price reductions and listen to your fans to lower the prices of the Switch 2 and their games and include physical game cartridges for all their games.

@sonic_rareware8: I don't know if they can really control the latter. They can control what they do with their own games, but if a third-party publisher is like "yeah we aren't paying for carts", then the only thing Nintendo could do is say "Ok, then your game is digital-only", which doesn't fix the issue.

We'll see if they decide to adjust the price after launch (if sales slow to a catastrophic crawl right after launch), but right now things are pretty chaotic with the tariffs. There's a limit to how much of a loss Nintendo can take on each Switch 2 unit before it stops making sense to even produce the console at all.

Wasted energy, the listing will just come back by the end of April. Nothing will stop people from pricing it however they want.

Better incentive, don't buy them. Easier said than done though, as we can't speak for the world that wants one.

that's great, so the scalpers can't get them and jack up the price on ebay.

It's worth noting, something that I haven't seen any gaming site talk about, Canada has Video Game Console tariffs imposed on imports from the US as part of the reciprocal tariffs, that's why preorders in Canada have been delayed.

Didn't Nintendo have a plan to combat scalpers?

Is their plan not working?

@girlusocrazy: Nintendo's plan is to have plenty of stock at launch, but nothing stops people from pricing whatever they want on Ebay. I can price a Q-tip for a million dollars on Ebay if I wanted to.

Whether the system sells out and people that want one can't buy one remains to be seen, but at any point people can price whatever they want on Ebay. It isn't an indication that people are buying it though, at least not yet.

How to report a fake pre-sale listing:

  1. Click on the item you want to report.
  2. Scroll down to the "About this item" section – on the left side, click "Report this item".
  3. Fill out the form like this:
    • Report Category: "Listing practices"
    • Reason for Report: "Inappropriate seller terms"
    • Detailed Reason: "Presale"
  4. In the description box, write something like this (or copy/paste):

This seller is listing a Pre-Sale (Pre-Order) item without actually owning it.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to release on June 5, 2025.
At this time, no one has the Nintendo Switch 2 in hand.
This violates eBay’s policy on pre-sale listings.

  1. Click "Submit report" – and done!
