FIFA 18 For Nintendo Switch Doesn't Run On Frostbite Or Have The Journey Mode

It sounds like FIFA 18's Switch edition could be more in line with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

The FIFA 18 trailer released today not only revealed the first look at this year's pro soccer game, but it also confirmed details about the Nintendo Switch edition.

Text shown at the bottom of the new trailer confirms that FIFA 18's Switch edition will not run on Frostbite--which powers the game on PS4, Xbox One, and PC--and won't include the single-player mode, The Journey. This time, it's called The Journey: Hunter Returns, which suggests it will again focus on Alex Hunter, the footballer who was the focus of the first Journey mode. The single-player mode also will not be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions of FIFA 18.

Personally, I don't need the 'Journey' mode. What matters is can I play online while I am on the go. The fact that I am going to be able to play this anytime whether I am at home, on my lunch break at work, on the road or on vacation without skipping a beat is the game changer for me.

Do people play the engine or the game?

I've been wondering that lately.

The next E3 might as well have games like Unreal Engine, Frostbyte 3, White Engine, Unity or Crytek among a very few others.

Yeah, let's play the engine!

I am pretty sure EA said it would be in line with the 360/PS3 versions from the beginning. Not a big surprise, considering the hardware limitations.

The Switch is just another Nintendo flop, we all said it needs to be as powerful as a PS4 so it will have third party support... it turns out it's using a 2/3 year old Tegra chip that is less powerful than what is in your phone today.

Stop buying their shit hardware, then they can do a Sega and go third party themselves.

@Terrorantula: really bro...

If they go 3rd party there games would look the same or a tad better... Nintendo is least likely to do realistic graphics, because according to them "realistic graphics doesn't age well"...

Always remember Nintendo design there hardware to suit THERE needs first... MS and Sony design there HW around 3rd party, because mostly likely what 3rd party needs is what Sony/MS will need themselves..

@Terrorantula: Yep. I stopped buying their hardware after N64. I want them to go Sega, as there's a good chance I'd buy some Mario games and stuff on my Xbox, but I don't want to have to buy their hardware to play JUST those. Imagine with proper modern CPUs and GPUs how much better Nintendo games would look, and play.

@NeonicTrash: "Imagine with proper modern CPUs and GPUs how much better Nintendo games would look, and play."

Sorry to burst your bubble but they would look a tad better, because most of Nintendo games uses a simple graphic style, and no matter the power of the hardware, i don't think they'll change..Its one of the many reason why they don't choose a really powerful gpu or cpu, the style they choose to make there games, using a really powerful chip would be overkill..

The system is almost x1 level, they could've made the game much better looking than a 360/ps3 game surely, just sounds like laziness to me. Doesn't bother me since i never play football games.

@perfect_chao: No, it really isn't. Lacking memory and drive space for one. Also, undocked Switch is severely weakened. Can't run X1 specs then, can it? And it has to run the game in both modes. It's not laziness, the Switch is that weak. Developers want their games to look and run as best they can on all platforms, not look shittier than they have to.

@ltjohnnyrico: and that last comment Is what I'm hoping most people do. Keep the sales for the switch also.

I am not into FIFA but would like it to do well so more third parties come on over.

Although for people saying it's not laziness as far as we know now nba 2k18 is the same on every system. If I get that it would be on switch so I can take anywhere.

Just saying FIFA I don't think is THAT crazy powerful that it couldn't run will all modes on switch. It's just ea half assin it. People buy it then they can add more support-- people don't and they can say "see no one buys on Nintendo"

Then ea should release it for a serious discount. But that's not going to happen. Then no one will buy the switch version and ea will stop all support for switch as the sales are not good enough to justify porting more games. It's the same crap every generation for Nintendo.

@joe_b1_kenobi: Why? PS3/360 versions don't get discounted, neither should Switch. Shadow Of Mordor 360 should've been cheaper cause it was gimped and couldn't do everything current gen consoles can? Of course not. Those systems are 10+ years old...people gotta upgrade sometime, or you get what you get.

Are we still supposed to be surprised by the Switch not being able to run AAA games? Although it's surprising even to me that it can't even run regular FIFA, but I didn't realize it used Frostbite.

I've seen this movie before. Withholding game modes is so EA and so lazy but I can give them the benefit of the doubt for maybe not having time to port their engine to Switch yet. Leaving out game modes, there's no excuse for that.

@lebanese_boy: there is no competitor on the Switch so they could've taken their time and release a Switch optimized game later. They wouldn't even have needed to do a lot of marketing for it either. Instead they choose the simplest, most cost effective route which is understandable from a short term perspective. When has the gaming industry really do us a favor as of late?

@lebanese_boy: Technical limitations. Game modes need memory and space. Switch is lacking in both. Time to port Frostbite? Switch can't run the engine. I see nothing in article indicating time as a factor.

@lebanese_boy: Common sense. Same reasons GTA online and Destiny stopped receiving updates on 360/PS3, technical limitations reached.

Frostbite wouldn't be running on Switch for the same reason it isn't running on PS3/360, it can't, not acceptably.

@7tizz: WTF are you talking about? SNES and Genesis were more or less on even grounds in raw power. Also you seem to forget the Gamecube era where all three consoles were getting the same multiplats.

@lebanese_boy: In terms of hardware power yes, they each excel in different areas but overall about the same in power. But he means a lot of Genesis games which had the same title as an SNES game such as Earthworm Jim or Beavis and Butthead, were different games. And some people prefer those Genesis versions.

@lebanese_boy: BLAST PROCESSING.

Genesis won the 16 bit era. Sega was for cool kids, SNES was for babies still clinging to NES nostlagia and silly Mario games.

@7tizz: Both the SNES and Genesis had aspects of their hardware that edge out the other. In the end they were very similar in capabilities and in the games they produced.

Also yes the games were the same whether you want to accept it or not. The base version for multiplats were mostly based on the PS2 hardware which was the weakest of the three and in the end looked roughly the same across all platforms.

@7tizz: They were. I don't know if you were gaming back then but I remember all those games being the very same save maybe for online play in some cases (GCN hardly featured any) and the rare extra compression on Gamecube discs. In fact that generation is well known for being the last one where game parity between consoles was so small.

@7tizz: Yes it's called an example but my point is that your example isn't representative.

Also dude you're assuming a whole lot, how in the hell would you know what I played or not? For your information I played all consoles that generation but only owned the gamecube.

@7tizz: I don't know what you mean by upgrades, at best those same games would be optimized to run better on the Xbox since its more powerful. And I did not deny that once.

What I said, very clearly, is that all three were essentially getting the same game and the game parity was very small. What's so hard to understand here?

@7tizz: Dude are you arguing just for the sake of arguing?

You keep gravitating around the same 2-3 games and claim they represent the majority, you pick the oddballs like Ghost Recon 2 which had different ENGINES and as you said: they aren't exactly the same game either, in fact the only thing they share was the name and setting! Their single-player campaign were totally different stories! It's like two different games entirely!

While the VAST MAJORITY of multiplats are exactly as I described them: essentially the same game with small parity. Also next time you pick a game get your facts right: Ghost Recon 2 never came out on PC.

Taking advantage of the Xbox HDD? Don't get me wrong it's good but this is simply par for the course when developing on Xbox and is hardly a point to add to your ''upgrade'' argument. What's next are you going to argue that the games took advantage of the Xbox's controller and AC plug?

As for online play, I already made my point. And having some bonuses or exclusive content don't make the game DIFFERENT. We are still essentially playing the SAME THING it's just that sometimes one version had something the other doesn't. In PoP Sands of Time for an example, some bonus features were cut from the Gamecube version due to size compression; are we going to argue that the Xbox/PS2 versions were ''upgrades''? Of course not since everybody was still playing essentially the same thing!

And that's basically what I've been saying this whole time: we were essentially playing the same game. Some versions might have features exclusive to a console (due to that console's unique abilities), some versions don't. And with some oddballs like Ghost Recon 2, we had a different thing entirely. But for the rest, there is no argument: they're essentially the same with small parity (graphics/sound quality, etc.).

@lebanese_boy: I think the super ninteno was more powerful (but not by much) because it also came out 2-3 years after the genesis. some games were better on different consoles. i thought the genesis had better versions of earthworm jim 1 and 2 and mortal kombat 1 but the SNES had better versions of mortal kombat 2 and street fighter 2/super street fighter 2.

@CeltaVigo: Yeah this goes back to what I said: both consoles had aspects that outdid the other. So in the end we get some games that look better on either and the rest is just the same.
