Now Playing: GS News Update: Final Fantasy 12 Remaster Release Date Announced

The remaster, whose full title is Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, was first announced in June 2016. It reportedly features better-looking backgrounds, character models, and cutscenes, while there will also be support for 7.1 surround sound. Additionally, players can choose between Japanese and English voices, while there will also be the option to use the "original" music or the "re-recorded" score.

Square Enix also said loading times have been reduced, an auto-save feature is being added, and Turbo Mode is being improved. Take a look at the remaster in the video above.

Final Fantasy XII was originally released on PS2 back in 2006. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

The most recent Final Fantasy release was 2016's Final Fantasy XV. While our reviewer, Peter Brown, didn't enjoy the game's characters, he thought its "beautiful world and exciting challenges save the day." For more, check out our full Final Fantasy XV review.

Why can't they bring it on PC aswell since Steam has the biggest Final Fantasy games collection than any console? Seriously who the hell even owns a PS4, only some teenage boys who fail at school while Steam is the biggest gaming network in the world and is used by everyone, its their best chance to maximize their profits.

I'm happy this game is coming out for ps4 finally, but its too bad they didn't make it a remake because there are a lot of things they could have fixed and added. The game has a great atmosphere at the start and as it goes along it gets more in-depth, but the story is way to lacking from the main character's point of view they could have done a lot better by fixing it up a bit and adding a few more things. Besides that the hunts are very well done and kind of blend in with the main story line unlike the latest ff15, but the other side quests are mainly there with the goal to get better weapons and items and don't tie into the story. I played the western version and found it very entertaining, although some people say having the same class for all your character's is what it ends being like they are wrong. Each of the characters have different stats and are better utilized as different roles which you can form yourself making it a very versatile game(for example vaan has the highest hp and is the 2nd fastest and does decent damage most people use him as a tank, basch hits the hardest making him your strongest weapon user, ashe is an all rounder since she is sort of the second main character as well and penelo and fran are better as healers with highest mp or ranged damagers). The international version basically makes the game a lot more challenging is all and adds some options to speed up the game when it gets boring(which tends to happen when your about 60% through the game the start of this game is where they went right it had a great atmosphere and was definitely an amazing game when it came out, but remastering it now when you have next gen games is redundant and obviously has been done because final fantasy has started to sell out since the lightning series). I will probably end up buying it because of the fact that this game was what got me hooked on final fantasy, but not till later when the price goes down as it is only worth about 20-30 bucks definitely not over that unless they remade it. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes an adventurous atmosphere in their game, all round great scenic value, interesting monsters and lore, fun bounty hunter quest lines that tie into the story, and a completely different battle style that is very involving and that you can modify in several ways. There are flaws in this game but every game has its flaws as for the story being lacking plot vice it has its charm in the sense that it lets the player use their imagination more and creates your own world which you can openly explore and enjoy. If this game hadn't come out less than a year of the ps3 coming out I believe it would have gotten a lot more attention and its getting its chance now but as I said they should have remade it slightly and fixed stuff cause we are in the next gen (cough sellouts, least work for maximum profit the Asian moto) back in the day these games were very innovative and fun but now final fantasy needs to step it up a bit more andtake risks(the lightning series was not a risk it was meant for the homo and chick fans it also had a horrible battle system which was overly rpg and gets put to shame by the ff12 battle system in my opinion) or they may lose a lot more fans.

Never played XII so I'll be picking this up to play after I clear my backlog of games. What I'm waiting on is the announcement of the PS4 port of my favorite FF series Final Fantasy 13. I love all three of 'em. And I will pre-order them the second I hear their available and play them for a 4th time to 100% completion. I hope they do a boss Collectors edition like the one the did for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. I would pay even $200+ for statuettes of the 3 versions of my Lightning in a collectors edition.

I remember not finishing this game on ps2 because I heard that in order to get the strongest weapons, you needed to ignore some chests in an area I already passed and wouldn't have passed on them.

Contemplated starting over but became disenchanted so I guess this is a good time to play it again.

@RJS86: it was one weapon, and pretty much worth it back then. Last time I checked it's different for the ZA edition

As much as I liked 12, I don't think I will get it. I told myself I would never fight Yiazmat again.

@DsPsofLife:I kind of think the same everytime I replay it. I play XII every couple of years but I've only beaten Yiazmat once. It's retarded. I'm definitely getting the remaster tho.

The combat system looks much more intriguing than that of FFXV. I skipped FFXV for the shallow mess that it is and I think I'll get FFXII remaster instead.

@cboye18: Good choice! Just remember that first 10hrs or so is just the prologue. And it's not linear, so it's easy to get distracted with side quests. My advice would be: advance the main story for 10hrs or so and then go do whatever your heart desires :)

I already played the HD version twice on pcsx2, I may buy this version as FF12 is my favorite in the series, but, if it's based on the inferior 'International Zodiac' version, then I'll pass on this one.

@dorog1995: I can't see how it's superior, it adds little to nothing to the original game and removes your (SPOILER ALERT) 'freedom' to choose any character and any weapon magic, tecnick, etc. you want, instead you are limited to some dumb classes/jobs (or whatever it's called), and can only use few weapons and magick(if any) tied to that class for the rest of the game. Played it once in a modded ps2, luckly it had a speed up function to finish it asap.

@DeathCrusher91: And that's exactly the reason why. Every character was the same except for some stats by mid to end game. This makes it more difficult and adds more strategy to swapping characters mid fight, while also giving characters a unique role gameplay wise. It's way more RPG.

@Arkhalipso: Looks like you and I have different tastes in games. I'll only buy this version if they let you choose which version to play at least (or if it's based on the original version).

@DeathCrusher91: Being able to pick whatever skill you want is what made the game feel so shallow. What's the fun in raising characters if they all turn out exactly the same way?

@Barighm: Whatever, if at least you could change your class midgame (dragon dogma), in case you choose a class early in the game and didn't liked it, or maybe less class (I think its 12 for 6 characters, like wtf) to choose, I wouldn't complain at all. Like I said before, FF12 is my fav in the series, but the international version is a POS to me.

@DeathCrusher91: I agree. I don't know why everyone like the Zodiac version. The very core definition of RPG's is to allow you to create and grow your character the way you see fit. What Square originally did with the Licence Board was perfect RPG design. I don't know what made them think it was a mistake. Some dumb narrow minded JRPG fans likes do be fed the same linear shit over and over. It's not a tradition to be open world-ish in Japan RPGs. Much later in life I noticed that western RPGs are much more faithfull to classic RPG elements. JRPGs are a niche, their own thing completely. I guess that's why we disagree from people that likes the Zodiac approach. They don't have any respect for classic RPG philosophy.

@aguering: I agree with you, first time I played the zodiac version I thought it would be a blast (like the first time I played original 12), but all I see with a few hours playing it, was a "harder and boring" version of 12, and the few things added was some new weapons, which you wouldn't be able to use all of them because of the classes limitations. The gameplay and license system on 12 is what made me play it once or twice every year after it was released.

the best gamplay feature that i liked about this game was this that you can secure a dungeon room you are in by killing monsters.(which allows you to explore that room without the annoying/stressful encounter system)

Excellent game, I don't understand why Final Fantasy XII gets so much hate, it has one of the best stories in the series and most of the characters are interesting and not obnoxious like in XIII. Yes the gameplay is different but it's fun when you get used to it. I guess most people just aren't willing to try new things?

@Dark_Mits: You can still control multiple characters in battle, and you can select a mode that makes each characters action menu show up for you to choose what they do every time their action bar fills up (when it becomes their "turn").
