Final Fantasy 14 Director Wants Switch And Xbox One Version, But Has One Condition

Cross-platform or bust.

Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida has said he's still interested in bringing the MMORPG to Nintendo's Switch and Microsoft's Xbox One, and has had meetings with executives from the respective platform holders to make it happen.

Speaking to Kotaku, Yoshida said he "would love for as many players to be on FFXIV as possible" and "conversations have been had with Phil Spencer of Microsoft, and the upper management teams of Nintendo."

However, Yoshida has said he wants both companies to meet one major condition: "the game has to have the capability of cross-platform play." One of the issues Yoshida noted, however, was that many companies don't consider how updates to the way online services are operated and regulated can impact an MMORPG.

"Those can become a hurdle when we consider operating FFXIV for an extended period of time," he said. "So when I talk to those first-party companies, I ask them, 'Do you have the capability to prepare for that, do you have the resolve that you're going to make sure to take responsibility and take care of those, do you have that willingness?'

"If we are able to come to some sort of agreement, a handshake so to speak, or if it does end up being that unfortunately we can't do a handshake with Final Fantasy XIV, either way we'll make sure to communicate with our players. But we have been tenacious--we've been trying to keep at it and be persistent about our conversations."

Getting Sony to open up its online services to Xbox and Nintendo customers may be an insurmountable obstacle for Yoshida and Square Enix, however. Sony has previously opted not to support cross-platform online player for Rocket League and, more recently, Minecraft.

During E3 2017, Nintendo and Microsoft announced that Rocket League and Minecraft would be cross-play compatible between Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC players. This has meant that, currently, Sony's PlayStation is the only platform not supporting cross-play for those games. You can read more about why Sony isn't supporting cross-play here.

Square Enix recently launched Stormblood, a new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. However, the game has been plagued with network issues which, according to the Japanese company, has been caused by DDoS attacks from third-parties.

I want to make sure everyone understands that im not intentionally hating on the Nintendo Switch as i grew up as a kid loving Nintendo as that was my first ever game console, however at the same time i wont be a Nintendo fanboy either so im just gonna keep it unbiased n factual as all my information is based on facts rather than opinion ok so yea

listen guys first n foremost let's get something straight THE NINTENDO SWITCH cannot run Final Fantast 14 as it's simply not possible as the Switch isn't anywhere near powerful enough to process this game, and for square Enix to develop a version of which could potentially run on the Switch it would take so much effort as they would have to completely redesign the game in such a way that it would have to be graphically similar to something from the ps2 era of gaming as the Nintendo Switch doesn't even have as much power as 2016 high end smartphones for crying out loud as phones with a snapdragon 820 for example such as the Galaxy s7 absolutely destroy the Switch in terms of graphical compute power, and nobody in their right mind would say oh hey you think we could play Final Fantasy 14 on smartphones ? Lmao ? never gonna happen. I know I'm gonna get a lot of mad Nintendo Fanboys talking shit so I'll go ahead n put the facts out there now so we ain't even gotta go there lol

I will give you the exact details of the Nintendo Switch Tegra X1 chipset below.........

TEGRA X1

CUDA Cores

256

Texture Units

16

ROPs

16

GPU Clock

~1000MHz

Memory Clock

1600MHz (LPDDR4)

Memory Bus Width

64-bit

FP16 Peak

1024 GFLOPS (can only be used in limited circumstances as this measurement isn't what's used to determine the total power of a given chipset but rather 32 bit operations is what's used (FP32)

FP32 Peak

512 GFLOPS

Architecture

Maxwell

Manufacturing Process

TSMC 20nm SoC

Those peak power FP32 numbers are the maximum power when the Tegra X1 is running at its max clocks of 1 GHZ, while the Nintendo Switch runs its max power mode when docked of around 768mhz which is approximately 25% less than the 1ghz speed of which the Tegra X1 needs to hit its peak power FP32 number of 512 gflops, and so 25% of 512 glops equals out to be a total of roughly 384gflops for the Nintendo Switch when docked Which means it's essentially almost the power equivalent of its older brother the WII U.........

Then to make matters worse when the Nintendo Switch is mobile it's 40% less powerful Which means when running mobile mode the Nintendo Switch has roughly 153 gflops of total power, and these numbers are the exact reason why the NINTENDO SWITCH WILL NEVER GET CURRENT GEN AAA 3rd party ports of games because it's barely powerful enough to run last gen games because every game for the Switch has to run in mobile mode, and docked mode as it's gotta be the same game per Nintendo requirements, and unfortunately even when docked the Nintendo Switch is getting smashed by smartphones, and getting absolutely CRUSHED BY A REGULAR XBOX ONE which has 1300 gflops compared to the Switch docked maximum of only 384 which means the Nintendo Switch when docked is only roughly 30% as powerful as an Xbox One, and to make matters worse it's Mobile power numbers have a peak performance of only 153 gflops when compared to Xbox one is only roughly 15% the total power of Xbox one, alright these numbers are the most accurate undeniable measurement of the true pathetic nature of the Switch hardware in terms of power n performance as it's an absolute Joke, and Nintendo should be embarrassed of themselves.......

Now that we've got that out of the way let's talk about the Potential for an Xbox version of Final Fantasy, and all I can say is that I currently started playing this game for the first time a few days ago on my PlayStation 4 Pro, and it's a phenomenal game of which seems run damn near a consistent 60fps if using the pro enhanced standard mode which locks the resolution to 1080p while increasing the frame rate to a near locked 60fps which is fantastic as the game feels great, however the truth is the 4k resolution mode is vastly superior in terms of image quality as it's one of the first games I've played of which I can clearly see a huge difference as the 4k mode is remarkable as it's so crisp & clear, and the game looks amazing, however it's a max of only 30fps, and it doesn't feel very good at least not after trying the 60fps standard mode, and so for now obviously I would love to have the 4k image quality but it's not as pleasurable n enjoyable as the 60fps mode because the performance differences are equally as important to me, and there is no doubt the 60fps mode feels vastly superior, and I can't switch back to the 4k mode 30fps it's just not the same experience, and so yea with all that being said the new XboxOneX launches November 7th, and I'll be anxiously awaiting launch day as I'll be in line at gamestop picking up my XboxOneX for sure launch day no questions asked, and so yea FINAL FANTASY 14 for the XboxOneX running full Native 4k locked 60fps oh yea sign me up make it happen square Enix as I'll start my character all over again from the beginning in order to get that Native 4k locked 60fps goodness as it's the best of both worlds as I can't have that with the PlayStation 4 pro because while it's an awesome system it's just simply not powerful enough to provide 4k 60fps for Final Fantasy 14, and that's alright it is what it is I still love my PlayStation 4 pro regardless, however make no mistake I would love to be able to have my cake & eat it too as Final Fantasy 14 running Native 4k locked 60fps on the XboxOneX will be absolutely amazing, and if square Enix gives me exactly that for my XboxOneX then I'll purchase the full game at the retail price as I'm currently just playing the free trial up to level 35 while having no immediate intention of purchasing the game, and not because it's not a great game but because like I said I want the full Native 4k locked 60fps Ultra high end Pc experience, and that's not possible on the PlayStation 4 pro, but make no mistake it's absolutely possible on the XboxOneX as that console could run Native 4k locked 60fps Pc Ultra settings without even breaking a sweat as the XboxOneX is a fully custom, highly modified, insanely over engineered console of which in terms of gaming power n performance the XboxOneX is the equivalent of an ultra high end $1500 to $1800 dollar Pc of which would be absolutely phenomenal to play games on such as Final Fantasy 14 where I'll be able have that full Native 4K locked 60fps experience, and so yea square Enix I'm ready to buy this game as soon as you port it over to the XboxOneX with Native 4k 60fps support, and so get it done already as it would be awesome to have this game ready to go on launch Day ?

FYI i don't wanna hear anyone trying to bash the XboxOneX cpu either because its vastly superior to the older jaguar cores used in the ps4 pro

The single biggest damage control statement from these pissed off Pc master Race jerks is oh but it's the same as the PlayStation 4 Pro because it's got the same CPU but that's totally not true.

The PlayStation 4 Pro CPU is absolutely bottlenecked for sure but the XBOX ONE X CPU is totally different dude ok seriously I'm not sure why people keep trying to say it's the same CPU because it's absolutely not as the new Xbox one X CPU is a revamped fully custom engineered evolved form of jaguar which also has attributes of Ryzen baked into the CPU at the hardware level, and also it's got the added benefit of full dx12 baked in at the hardware level also ok not just some software version but rather a hardware implementation..........

On the CPU side, there's been much conjecture that Scorpio would feature AMD's new Ryzen technology - something we thought unlikely, owing to manufacturing timelines, not to mention Microsoft telling us last year that the new console would feature eight CPU cores. All signs point to the upclocked Jaguar cores we find in Xbox One, and Scorpio's CPU set-up is indeed an evolution of that tech, but subject to extensive customisation and the offloading of key tasks to dedicated hardware.

Loading... hold tight!

"So, eight cores, organised as two clusters with a total of 4MB of L2 cache. These are unique customised CPUs for Scorpio running at 2.3GHz. Alluding back to the goals, we wanted to maintain 100 per cent backwards compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox One S while also pushing the performance envelope," says Nick Baker.

The new x86 cores in Scorpio are 31 per cent faster than Xbox One's, with extensive customisation to reduce latency in order to keep the processor occupied more fully, while CPU/GPU coherency also gets a performance uplift. There's significant hardware offloading too - some of which is inherited from Xbox One, some of which is radically new.

However, potentially the most exciting aspect surrounding the CPU revamp doesn't actually relate to the processor blocks at all, but rather to the GPU command processor - the piece of hardware that receives instructions from the CPU, piping them through to the graphics core.

"We essentially moved Direct3D 12," says Goossen. "We built that into the command processor of the GPU and what that means is that, for all the high frequency API invocations that the games do, they'll all natively implemented in the logic of the command processor - and what this means is that our communication from the game to the GPU is super-efficient."

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.

PUT THAT INTO YOUR PC MASTER RACE PIPE & SMOKE ? IT !!!!!!!!!

This absolutely has nothing to do with Sony. All FFXIV servers are completely separate from PSN servers. It's just a matter of talking to them for being online. That's it. No PSN services are linked to FFXIV. Hell, you don't even need PS+ to play FFXIV. If Nintendo and Microsoft infrastructure can and are willing to talk to FFXIV servers, then all players can play together. Don't try to put the blame on Sony on this one, Gamespot.

This all has to do with Microsoft and Nintendo (mostly Nintendo) having the ability to keep their networks in proper working order to be able to handle FFXIV updates and patches and constant online access to FFXIV servers. If they can't put in the work to do that, Yoshi-P doesn't want to do it. Plus Microsoft has to make sure Xbox Live Subscription isn't a requirement. That was the main thing that was holding back XIV from coming to their systems.

If I remember correctly, when they were discussing FF14 back in the days, Microsoft wanted their servers to be standalone as their cross platform policy prohibited it and Square Enix said no as they wanted 360 to be part of PS3/PC server.

Amusing that whoever is the leader on the console war they switch roles!

Cross-platform is a red herring, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure why this has become such a talking point lately with gamers, developers, etc. I wonder if anyone has a reasonable explanation for why this is such a big deal. You can talk about "instant community" for the game on newer platforms...but, the argument there is that you have new games being introduced all the time, and a community is built inevitably anyway. So, that's not a reasonable argument.

If I recall correctly, MS was equally close-minded about cross-platform play back in the 360 days. The "damnation" of Sony for their lack of interest today is unwarranted. (My opinion, obviously)

@otterbee: Um no. As an adult gamer I can tell you the people I play games with have all types of consoles. It's nice we can all play together. In fact it's quite silly we can't with some games.

The only red herring here is a person who doesn't support cross platform.

I for one am happy it has a monthly subscription. It keeps the riffraff out.

Ever gone to a public event that was free vs one that costs money? I bet you notice the difference.

@millionsedge: I don't know, GW2 doesn't have a monthly sub, but the community in there is quite pleasant compared to some of the other games I've played.

I think in many cases, the quality of the community has less to do with a paywall and more to do with the nature of the game itself, and whether the game's mechanics cultivate toxicity (no, I won't divert a player's behavior from the player itself, but it is quite common that games that have less forgiving mechanics that punish mistakes tend to have more toxic or elitist players).

@millionsedge: i bet that under those paying gamers you will also find some biggest d!ks...it makes no difference.

I play Neverwinter almost everyday. I spent some money for mounts but i dont pay for the VIP status...but there are many VIP players ouf there and the community is still healthy.

I don't see why the writer of this article is comparing FF14 to minecraft and rocket league.

In FF, on PS4 you download the 'client' and once you open it up then the client downloads all the patch updates and installs them - the updates don't go through PSN - you don't even need a PS Plus account to play the game. This is because you already pay a subscription and so the game can push as many updates as it need to day one without getting approval first.

It's totally different to the other games.

If Ms and Nintendo agree to this then it should be good - it will mean there are more players, but Xbox will have to not block it with their Xbox live paywall - like they do with all f2p and media applications - and they will have to be open to letting it update as much as it needs to without a fee every time.

He switch might be harder due to its limited hdd space - maybe it could stream the majority of it just like DQ11 on the 3ds?

Why would Sony ever let cross play with an Xbox happen anyway? There's no incentive behind it. There's more people playing rocket league on PS than on PC and Xbox combined. There's absolutely nothing that gives Sony a good reason to let it happen, and it isn't going to change.

i think it's nice but you'll have to pay for nintendo online service (2018) and xbox live gold ($60, yearly. i think?) just to play with xbox players and switch players, if you don't want xbox live gold, i guess your just playing with other switch users then, for minecraft and rocket league.

there is so much false information below in comments.

FACT IS: Sony will not allow cross platform play because of money (plan and simple) no other reason. Not because of XBL, or any other tech reasons. There is no business that plans to make keep employees, keep growing, keep their install base growing will allow cross platform or "give a reason to potential consumer to not buy your product and or not to continue buying your product if they are already a consumer" plan and simple.

Is it greed, NO- it's a corporation/business where those decisions are weighed against profits and the future - not why joe blow from OhiO cannot play FF14 with their buddy who owns their competitors platform.

This would be good for SquareEnix ff14 and the gamers but would be of no benefit and actually hurt Sony. That is why its is not going to happen. I personally would love to see FF14 expand to more players, but from Sony's point of view - they have the lead..... why give any reason to give it away.

@jenovaschilld: So you have proof that Sony has a choice in this with FFXIV? I've not found one article or interview with Yoshida where he has said that Sony has any say in this. It's always talk about MS and/or Nintendo. Every article I've seen always speculates that Sony has some say but if it was true one would think Yoshida would bring it up. I could be wrong but see no evidence. It always makes me wonder if the people who say such things actual read and digest the article they post on.

@darkelf83: Well also consider Sony bought alot of Squareenix stock 15yrs ago, and please please please - do not forget that Sony is the gate keepers of any games that comes to their platform. The number one main job of a console maker and platform holder, is deciding what games comes to their console and how it is will be used on that system. Since the days of Atari when any game could be made for it an thus it killed the system, after that Nintendo and every console afterwards requires a license to put their games on any systems.

So sony has alot of say,- MAXIMUM SAY, AND THE FINALE WORD. to thE point of whether you see cross platform play, those decisions are made behind closed doors to benefit the corporation. Cross platform play= is simple not the publishers decision alone.

@jenovaschilld: The game is already on PlayStation so not sure where you headed with "what games comes to their console" bit. FFXIV does not require a PS Plus membership to play, it only uses PSN to verify that you own the game before allowing a login. There is no actual cross network involved, it's all outside servers. So unless you've found proof some where that Sony needs to allow this, that Yoshida is concerned about Sony, or something similar I'll stick with not Sony's decision for now.

Also why would Sony want to upset Square over this when they bring so much money to them? It would be nothing but win-win for Sony. They keep Square happily making lots of games for them, they show they are willing to do some cross play if this comes to either Switch or Xbox. If MS doesn't pick this up they show their not really serious about cross play and only want to pick and choose. Sony has nothing to lose here.

@darkelf83: What i meant by what games comes to their consoles, is that when they give out a license to release a game for the PS, they make the rules whether it gets cross platform play or not, NOT square.

Since the main way that sony makes money is the 20-30% it takes in on any software sold on its platform its priority is to have lots of consoles and software sold.

Why would you give your (current consumers and potential consumers) a reason to buy your competition's console. Right now FF14 has a home on the ps4 platform and xbox doesn't and if xbox does get FF14, why would Sony allow cross platform play with its vast amount of current players. That would only give xbox one owners and potential owners a reason to not buy the sony ps4.

Sony, xbox, are not out to encourage the purchase of the other, they do not care about cross play, it does not benefit them in anyway. I personally would love it if XBL and PSN players could cross play with each other in every game, and pc players could play with anyone on console on any game via cross play. But just like I wouldn't share my customers with my competition, I understand why there isn't cross play.

@darkelf83: It's people hopping on the Rocket League and Minecraft headlines bandwagon and presuming all of this with FFXIV *must* be a Sony barrier.

Despite Sony being the first platform holder to support MMO cross-platform play over 15 years ago.

Despite Sony posing no barrier whatsoever for FFXIV PS3/PS4/PC cross-play from the start.

Despite Microsoft declining to take part in a version of FFXIV with cross-play the last couple years, insisting it would also require optional dedicated XBL-only shards (which Square Enix opposed).

Despite PS4 currently having the largest library of cross-play console/PC games on the market right now. It's not even close.

So, no, while they may have declined Rocket League (which has always supported PS4/PC cross-play) and Minecraft (Microsoft-owned) for bizarre player protectionism reasons - Sony clearly hasn't been locking PS4 games behind a wall when it comes to cross-play.

Read between the lines, and you can see - specific to those two games - that Sony may simply not want to help bloat Microsoft's MAU numbers, as MS can claim those cross-play participants as active users.

The MAU is the central, all-important statistic for Microsoft shareholders right now for the Xbox division.

Don't swallow the "good guy" Koolaid without following the money trail for all parties here.

*yawn* If anyone is at risk here with crossplay, it's Xbox owners and Microsoft. How many times has Microsoft been hacked and user info stolen resulting in hundreds of dollars in fraudulent charges. Only for them to say eat the charges or we ban your account? None. I'll be happy to play FF on my PC, thank you. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.consumeraffairs.com/amp/news/playstation-network-accounts-hacked-sony-leaves-victims-holding-the-bag-031315.html

Don't know if Sony ended up changing their stance on this or not, cause I don't own a PlayStation and this is the reason why, shady indeed.
