Final Fantasy 15 Broke Even On Development Costs In First 24 Hours

It didn't take long for the game to recoup its development costs.

Final Fantasy XV might have taken more than a decade to come out, but it didn't need nearly that long to recoup its development costs. Game director Hajime Tabata told Dualshockers that the game broke even in just one day when it launched on November 29, 2016.

The game shipped 5 million copies on its first day, setting a new franchise record. In January, Square Enix announced that the figure rose to 6 million copies shipped. The company has not yet said how many copies of the game have actually been sold to consumers.

No Caption Provided

Before Final Fantasy XV came out, Tabata said the game needed to sell 10 million copies to be a "success." He later clarified that comment, stating that 10 million is the studio's personal goal, not necessarily how many units it needs to move to turn a profit.

Despite only being out for a month, Final Fantasy XV landed in the No. 10 position for best-selling games in the US for all of 2016.

Square Enix, like most other publishers, does not disclose budget specifics for its projects, so we don't know how much Final Fantasy XV actually cost to develop. The game was backed by a major marketing push as well, which would be separate from the development costs.

It was a long road to release for Final Fantasy XV, as the game was announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII more than a decade ago, at E3 2006. At E3 2013, the game was re-revealed as Final Fantasy XV. It was delayed multiple times after that before it finally came out in November.

GameSpot's Final Fantasy XV review scored it an 8/10. Reviewer Peter Brown said it is a "fascinating game" with a "beautiful world and exciting challenges."

In other news, Tabata has talked about possibly bringing Final Fantasy XV to PC. It is currently available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

This is one of those games you play and you want to like, but it keeps doing stuff to make you not like it. For an open world game it was confined to linear motives. It's hard for me to dive back in, even if the graphics and gameplay is incredible.

That's good news then. It means there will be more final fantasies. I really hope to see agnis as final fantasy 16.

I havent played 15 yet because i dont have ps4. But im sure im gonna love it. I never disliked any final fantasy titles. Even the loathed ff13...

An ok game overall. A HORRIBLE Final Fantasy game though. I would rather buy a really outdated FF8 or FF9 than the wasted $80 I spent on the Deluxe Edition for this snoozefest. Take tips from CD Project Red (Witcher 3) on how to properly craft an open world filled with meaningful and fun side quests and secrets. FFXV is beautiful but I hate to admit that in my opinion, there aint much else going for it. I have enjoyed World of Final Fantasy SO much more.

of course it would because at one point staff members on the project was so few when the lost the vision on where they were gonna take it...

In other words they weren't full staffed all the way through development...

Regardless of what money this company came up with for FFXV, I definitely enjoyed FFX and FFXIII way more. I own all 3, and the way the summons work in FFXV are sadly a disappointment, the modern day dialogue in this game killed all character development too. And the open world aspect, as much as I like the idea, should stay with the games out there that normally are sandbox style. And I've put over 80 hours in FFXV.. sadly, wasted my time. I know I should have learned after 10 hours even that it wasn't getting better, but.. i tried to stretch out as much hope as one possibly could for a game lol.

@Lace3: FFXV is a major letdown. I also poured more than 80 hours, level 99 all weapons, blah blah....w/e. Worst story in a game ever. Terrible character development in spite of nice voice dialogue between the 4 main characters. The world is just not that great or vast or diverse in landscape. The dungeons are the worst dungeons ever designed. Nice graphics. Nice music. Nice momentum, but sadly a letdown in the end.

@Lace3: Seems like you enjoy tightly scripted linear games not open world RPGs. How did you enjoy FFXII? That is one of the FF games which is designed similarly to XV.

@jayz0ned: FFXII is MUCH different to FFXV. I see where you were headed in your comment, yes there are some minor similarities such as the change that FFXII started in combat switching from ATB to being able to freely move your characters and more action oriented than any before. But FFXII was much more of a FF game, it maintained the Final Fantasy magical "feel". It had an outstanding cast and the content, both main story line & side quests, were interesting and relevant and extended interests in the game overall. FFXV has purely meaningless fetch quests that are so pointless. I think Tabata basically threw the Final Fantasy legacy and background in the trash in lieu of trying to make the game "more accessible to old and new comers to the series". I know some will disagree, but having been a huge fan of FF since FF7, this is by far the biggest disappointment (with a close runner-up being FFXIII), but my personal hype build-up of over 15 years was absolutely crushed when this sleep inducing game was released. I keep trying to give it another chance and will crank it back up from time to time, but just cant keep interested long enough to finish 2 consecutive sidequests. I hope Tabata is put on another project cuz he ruined FFXV for me.

Back on topic though, FFXII had a great combat system which kept the basics of FF series and didn't completely flush the whole magic idea down the drain like XV did. Almost all of XV's battles can be won by simply mashing the attack button over and over again. I think you should snag FFXII remaster this June when it releases and then analyze the 2 with both being fresh on your memory and then see if you feel the same. Cuz I feel the 2 are vastly different. All opinions are respected in my eyes though. Just how I see it rather!!

@Jimbowesker: Yeah, the games are obviously different... I didn't mean to imply they were exactly the same. They do have some similarities though such as the fetch quests (there were some missions which required you to get ingredients from monsters) and the hunts. My point is that OP mentioned the two most linear FF games so he likely doesn't enjoy the open world or nonlinear aspects of previous FF games which XV doubled down on. The gameplay is obviously very different and I didn't mention gameplay anywhere in my comment.

@jayz0ned: i didn't mind FFXII, didn't beat it sadly, but i did like that game. I do like a good script for a game. I just didn't think that FFXV did a great job for an open world game as reviewers may have given it.

Shareholder appeasement. Same thing MS is doing with Xbox. If they were truly happy, they would announce a PROFIT. The fact they've shipped like 6 million copies and we're only just now hearing the development costs have been covered? Kinda fishy.

@Barighm: They are only talking about shipments, dude many of us buy the digital versions too, also one thing about shipments, almost all of them are made by shops, so some of them nobody is even actually using to play the game. If you ever hear about shipments, then it's just how many games a shops around the world have bought the game (mostly).

@Barighm: By that logic, 99% of games are kinda fishy when it comes to profit, because you rarely ever see a game officially announcing revenue/profit. The most you see are items sold, and sometimes not even that...

This doesn't make it a good final fantasy game. It should have remained a spin off.

Development costs? Sure. Marketing costs? N.E.V.E.R. Just consider all the marketing from as early as 2006 and then consider the Kingsglaive movie, the anime and what not. This game would only break even if it sold like 15 million copies maybe.

@Berserk8989: what early marketing? Back then all we saw was a couple of trailers and artwork then it remained in the dark for a few more years, a couple of announcements that it was still being worked on, a few more art concepts then rebranded as ff15 with a trailer. Minimal costs to make those trailers compared to a full blown marketing campaign

@datriax: Development costs doesn't include marketing costs. I fully believe it covered it's development costs with 6 million sold copies, but to cover all the marketing costs which include everything else basically (like the anime and Kingsglaive) the game would need to sell more than double of that in my opinion.

@Berserk8989: And marketing costs are usually a lot higher than development costs, even so for big-name games. I don't remember where I had seen it (and too lazy to google), but there was a pie chart with video game budget distribution, and about 55% of it was marketing.

@Berserk8989: I doubt the Kingsglaive movie cost them that much anyway since it was made by SE's in house CGI studio which does all the cutscenes amongst other stuff like lighting and cinematography for all their other games, so those people were getting paid regardless of if the movie was getting made and voice actors are paid pretty shitty wages generally. Besides their financial report was pretty good so I'd say they have done fine anyways.

@tommyd79: It's not how many players bought the game, it's how many games were shipped to shops, aka called a shipment.
