Final Fantasy 15 Director Has No Plans for Lightning Trilogy-Style Series

The last time Square Enix released a core, single-player Final Fantasy RPG on consoles--Final Fantasy XIII--it ended up expanding into the Lightning Trilogy. You might assume something similar could happen with Final Fantasy XV, but Square Enix doesn't currently have plans to do so, according to director Hajime Tabata.

"To answer the question of whether we have any intention of making further games with Noctis in them after or continuing the story after Final Fantasy XV is out, I can tell you we don't currently have any plans for that," he tells GameSpot.

"There may be a call for it business-wise, but personally from our point of view, the way we see it is there are people that have been waiting for this game for a very long time now, and we want them to keep enjoying it for as long as possible."

Final Fantasy XV has been in development for more than a decade, initially being revealed as Final Fantasy Versus XIII in 2006. It's been delayed repeatedly during that time and was just pushed back once again. It's now slated for release in November.

While Tabata may not plan to expand on XV in the same was we saw with XIII, he could still leverage what the studio has created.

"In terms of what we want to do with the technology, we want to use that technological foundation that we've built up with Final Fantasy XV and move on to do something completely new using that knowhow and that base," Tabata says. "We're going to look into new directions with it."

Whether that means another Final Fantasy game or not is unclear. We do know there will be more Final Fantasy XV content to play beyond what's included in the main game, as it has a season pass. That adds new episodes featuring different playable characters, as well as an expansion pack that adds "a completely new way to play."
