After Final Fantasy XV's big event this week, the news just keeps pouring in. Director Hajime Tabata recently spoke to Dengeki Online about the game's new Platinum Demo and more.

On the subject of the free demo's resolution, he said the team used a dynamic resolution, with 1080p being the limit, according to a translation from DualShockers. As for frame rate, which some have remarked could be better, Tabata made it clear that the demo's goal was not to be a technical showcase, but rather to give the players a taste of the world before launch.

The technical specifications for the Platinum Demo are the same for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, he said, though he's not sure if the same will be true for the final release. He also pledged that Square Enix will spend time between now and launch optimizing the game so it can look and perform as good as possible.

Other highlights from the interview:

  • Final Fantasy XV will be playable at E3 and possibly other events before launch.
  • There are no plans to update the Platinum Demo as Square Enix did with Episode Duscae.
  • Tabata believes there may be free and paid DLC for Final Fantasy down the road, though there is no word yet on what form this will take.
  • He reiterated that a PC version of Final Fantasy XV could be released after the console launch, but nothing has been decided at this stage.

Final Fantasy XV launches in September 2016 for PS4 and Xbox One. As stated, a PC version could come later, but nothing has been decided. For more on all the announcements from this week's Uncovered event in Los Angeles, check out this roundup of stories and this collection of trailers.

Before we start getting on Square-Enix on failing to showcase a high frame rate we should ask them why they decided to showcase such a boring demo as a first impression in the first place? Seriously, what is up with peoples priorities today? I didn't leave that demo being like "well if they want me to order this game they better fix that framerate." I was too busy trying to stay awake.

It's weird since it actually looked like a tech demo to showcase in-game effects such as rain/sunny or day/night. Anyway although it wasn't impressive graphics wise I loved the art direction and settings.

PC/Steam gamers, just wait. Dragon Quest Heroes got a PC/Steam release almost a week after the giant PS4 launch, and it was on no one's radar. Square Enix has a habit of keeping their PC releases hush-hush to not cut into console sales.

For those who are solely PC/Steam gamers without a PS4/XB1, this is a non-issue. For those who also own a PS4/XB1, just be patient and don't pre-order, unless you REALLY want one of those Collector's Editions (there's a 99% chance there will NOT be a PC Collector's Edition if there's a PC release. Square Enix tends to be 100% digital release on PC, except for the two MMOs.)

I don't think anyone should be overly concerned with resolution comparisons at this point.

PS4 will likely have a slight visual edge, locked closer to 30fps. XBO will probably be not as sharp with some resolution scaling.

We've been down this road a number of times.

@mrfriki:

Well I think when the consoles first released there was a genuine interest in how they stacked up. At this point its pretty clear the PS4 is almost always going to have bit more headroom.

They should rather talk about the combat system. I played the platinum demo and it was ass.

@Sozialminister: Square Enix said the final game is going to have two battle systems that can be toggled. Episode Duscae had the "hard mode" battle system while it seems the Platinum Demo has the "easy mode" battle system.

The final game is supposed to have both.

@mrfriki: I played both and Platinum Demo's "hold X to attack" battle system was much simplified from what's in Episode Duscae, whose battle system seemed overly complex but you could do a lot with it, if you bother to learn the controls.

@Elranzer: Hopefully is something in the middle ground between both of them. I recently finished Xenoblade X and its combat system was way too simple to learn and use but utterly complex to master, Ideally I'll want something in the middle.

@brownyyy:

Its not just the hold the button attack. The dodging and the whole movement felt stiff and by no means intuitive.

But the worst thing is: Where is the party? I have no idea why they only let you fight with a single character. This was so boring.

One of the worst demos ever. I dont get what they were thinking by releasing that.

@Sozialminister: I thought the dodging was ok apart from the final boss. I resorted to just using the teleportation move which I felt really cheap for doing. I see what you mean about the party as that's how all the videos have depicted the game. I hear there are 2 types of controls which I was not aware of so its should be ok.

i liked the Duscae Demo much much better. where you could chose weapon skills from a menu on the left side. like dragoon jump or subvita blade.

their are some flaws but square knew that or they wouldnt have given a demo u can smack down.

i liked what i saw and will enjoy the game to the fullest.

pc people need to remember that console players dont care you can do better.

im in my couch holding a perfect(ps4) controller.

i dont and never want to be a pc gamer anymore.

I was pumped for this game, but after trying the combat, I'm left very disappointed. The combat is a dynamic auto select to attack, not aim and attack. Dodging and moving around was also sluggish... The boss fight was pretty bad because of this.

@oshishinobu: well there isnt any point in getting an Xbox one because the biiger exclusives are coming to PC, the only console with a wider range of exclusives and that look good to me is PS4, it has Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank and the older titles like infamous second son, killzone, god of war 3, last of us, driveclub, Knack (yes its mediocre), Order 1886, Resogun, Littlebig planet 3, Grim Fandango, TearAway, GT Sport, and if you dont have last gen Injustice Gods Among US. plus all the great little indies

all these games have different styles look really good (besides Grim Fandango) and the types of games (third person, first person, over top and the different genres like grim fandango) its a console that stands out. if none of these fancy you, theres no point getting a console besides friends

I haven't felt the framerate issue. Was surprised it was a problem. And for me, the problem is not resolution either. However, something with the art direction and texture application (and details) are off. At the beginning, the rocks look very fake, and that is not a problem with resolution, it is a problem of art. THe original Gears of War had better texture than that. THe scene where young Noctis is in that room with the table has some off elements as well: books with very poor quality texture (low res) and other elements (like the floor) very shiny and beautiful. SOme elements cast shadows, others don't.

I mean, the first demo had the same problem. Everything looked fake, plastic. And to be honest, I don't think the final product will improve much from that. It won't matter if you play it on a power horse PC or PS4.5 ... the art direction will be the same.

But I loved how the game plays and the character animation, so I think they should be selling other aspects of the game, since it won't be the visual benchmark they are trying to sell.

Tabata promised an ending to be super emotional that will leave players in tears like Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Type-0.

Here's my bet:

1: All 4 of them die at the end.

2: This is the most likely...all 3 of them will give their life at the end protecting Noctis so he can reclaim the throne...that's why they are in a road trip together during the entire game, so the players get attached to all of them just so the game gives us that blow to the stomach and drops us in tears when they die protecting Noctis.

Who agrees with the 2nd one raise ur hands.

@XDarkMessengerX: More like... King Regis becomes a One-Winged Angel type abomination at the end, is the final boss and Noctis will have to slay his own father.

It's right in the logo art.

Mention frame rate and a console war starts. Imagine that. It's ridiculous how much people fight over it. Video games are just glorified toys. Not a way of life.

@mirage_so3: That's because this site is now controlled by 18 year old people who has never had the chance to play c64, atari, gameboys etc and realize games are fun cause of the gameplay, story, music etc, not cause it's just visually (which differs from one person to another) perfect.

@mirage_so3: It's easier to make "war" over a numerical value than over something subjective like game quality. Not to mention that our generation has a lot of people who will play a game they don't like which is technologically advanced, and who will not play a game they like because it didn't have cutting edge graphics.

Guys, PC version will come eventually. However, SE can't announce it, and won't launch it at the same time as console. The main reason for this is because the PC version will be much superior, and no one would buy the game on console if all versions were released at the same time. So they need to make some money on console first, and then they release PC version to make money on PC too. That's how they can milk money on all platform.
