Final Fantasy 15 DLC Includes Online Co-Op

Online multiplayer comes to Final Fantasy XV, if you pay.

Final Fantasy XV will offer online multiplayer in the form of co-op after its launch, Square Enix announced today as part of its Paris Games Week event.

There isn't much to go on yet regarding how online play will work, butit sounds like the mode is only available through Final Fantasy XV's DLC pass, which costs $25. Square Enix also reiterated today that three expansion packs that focus on Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto are on the way. Additionally, these characters, who fight alongside Noctis in the campaign, will be playable in the online co-op mode. Up to four players can take part.

"The main focus of the season pass is three original episodes that take place during the events of Final Fantasy XV," Square Enix said in a press release. "Each episode allows players to take control of one of Noctis' comrades in all-new adventures that offer unique play styles tailored to each character. Players can explore previously unseen areas filled with new monsters, and even obtain weapons that can later be used in the main game."

Episode Gladiolus comes out first, followed by Episode Ignis and then Episode Prompto. These expansions will be available to buy individually as well.

The expansion that adds online co-op is called "Comrades" and as stated, it will allow up to four players to battle together as Noctis, Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis as a group." Comrades will be available through the Final Fantasy XV season pass and by itself. Square Enix did not share pricing details for any Final Fantasy individual DLC, though the pass itself goes for $25.

The confirmation of online co-op for Final Fantasy XV today comes after Square Enix teased that an expansion pack for the game would allow you to play in a "completely new way." Online co-op appears to be that new mode of play.

Square Enix also said today that Final Fantasy XV has "gone gold," meaning that development on the base game is finished. This is a particularly noteworthy achievement, considering the game has been in development in one form or another for over a decade.

Final Fantasy XV comes out on November 29 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In other news, Square Enix has released a pretty cool CG short movie inspired by the game called "Omen."

I actually believe them and understand why this is DLC. Especially according to the development journey so far.
Because in this case with the Episodes and co-op, there are very different characters and have different technical requirements and game mechanics to be made. And this takes time.
Eg. Prompto for example is a gunslinger, and his mechanics will likely be 3rd Person shooter. Very different than how the game would currently play, as Noctis.
Sure it could be put with the main game, but then its more delays.
Got to draw the line somewhere...

I am very skeptical about this CO-OP mode appearing out of nowhere after the game got gold, without any warning, footage, or demonstration. This is probably a separate arena based, "mercenary mode" type of DLC. Like dedicated levels/maps to play together. I doubt it is integrated with the single player story mode. It is highly unlikely you won't be able to play the story with online players.

I doubt it's worth the 25$ (or however you'll have to pay to get this mode alone).

You guys nag to much.

You get the typical solo ff as normal. Which looks a sgood as it can get.

They want to build on the expierence. So they make dlc like every other company and decide to add chapters for noctis his friends and add a coop part for people who want to play with friends. Again all optional.

As it stands ill pass on the coop and grab the others - the VR.

But i dont see any problems here. Ill get my rpg as i pay for it.

@Vavires: Do other companies charge you extra to play their multiplayer content? This is in addition to the yearly subscription you already pay!

@Pac1Man: So all the story revolving around one the characters and new monsters and weapons, is not worth anything at all to you? For me that mp aspect is just a bonus, normally there isn't any mp at all, so what the heck are you whining even.

@sena: IKR? The game's already done. People whine just to whine, it's DLC anyway. They don't HAVE to buy it to experience the main game. (But we all know they're gonna buy it anyway)

Is this actual full on co-op for the main game or is it like just some side multiplayer only mode?

This is exactly what I wish they would have done with GTA V! Someone plays as Michael while two others play as Trevor and Franklin. That would have made for a very cool option!

I would prefer they skip the dlc route, and make a FFXV-2 with this. Already this game cost too much to make, anyways. I can't imagine they could put something like this together for a tacked-on season pass item. Better they do it right, make it worthile than shoehorn it in.

Well, it's better than paying a monthly fee for online like they did for FF 14, right?

@nayce54: Well you can't play online without PS+ so yes- you have to pay that annoying monthly.

I am VERY skeptical about this coop mode, probably standalone arena/mercenary type mode.

They need to expedite the PC port for this game. It'll come eventually, as every other FF title has made its way to PC, but I'd like to play this soon and don't really want to buy a console in order to play one game.

@troll_elite: lets hope x1/ps4 sales go well first. Then we can see the full game for ps4 pro/scorpio and PC of course. I say full because they will probably have all DLC and i would assume some dramatic changes to the design and maybe even game play since SQ did say there were things they wanted to do originally that was not possible with current console hardware.

In order to play as the gun wielding character i need to buy a DLC?
And that only in a seperated part of the game?
SE talks about modern ways of JRPGs but your FFXV is full of restrictions and stoneage design decisions

@Xirtahm: agreed. but it sounds like the coop mode won't allow you to play the entire game with friends or anything impressive like that. most likely, the coop will be limited to a particular quest they have in mind.

@Xristophoros: Which is unfortunate. To have the option to play through a JRPG with a friend... it brings back memories of Secret of Mana on the SNES. :O

@Xristophoros: Hence, EA is not one of the greater greedy bastards among these fishes. There are others who sell whole parts of games as DLCS, compared to maps of EAs.

@skittymiao: EA and Activision are the original greedy bar stewards who came up with season passes. This is FFs first such thing and I'm sure it will include a lot more than just this. VR is one of the features that will be included but let's wait and see before putting them down for something we don't know yet.

@gotrekfabian: How many games needed Season Passes to play multiplayer or co-op?

@skittymiao: You're too young to know better it seems. Games never used to require a season pass. The content was given for free or as income for progression. Activision was the originator of the pass with its CoD franchise. Just because something is the norm doesn't mean that it is right.
