Final Fantasy 15 PS4 vs. Xbox One Demo Comparison

"Xbox One plays out more fluidly when it hits its target 30fps cap."

Following the release of Final Fantasy XV's new Platinum Demo last week, Digital Foundry has now conducted a technical analysis and compared the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.

No Caption Provided

Both versions use a dynamic resolution, with a cap of 1080p, the site reports. Typically, the PS4 edition will output at 900p, but, using the dynamic resolution, can rise to full-HD for some sections. The PS4 version can fall to 1568 x 882 during the demo's final boss section, but it doesn't go any lower.

Now Playing: The Evolution of Final Fantasy XV Over 10 Years

The Xbox One version of the Platinum Demo runs at a native resolution of 1408 x 792, Digital Foundry says, with the highest native resolution being 1568 x 882 and lowest at 1360 x 768.

"In other words, Xbox One always runs at a lower pixel output than PS4 and it translates to a perceptibly clearer image for the latter, in the main," the site explained. "However, image quality takes a hit due to the aggressive in-house post-process anti-aliasing, causing the image to blur on each console regardless of resolution in use. Coverage is also spotty, particular on Noctis and Carbuncle's hair, and high contrast elements can flare up in aliasing for a few frames before returning to a blurred state. For the second demo running [following Episode Duscae], Final Fantasy XV is let down by a post-process image treatment that's inadequate for the subject matter at hand, and it distracts from the great visuals at its core."

On the subject of frame rate, Digital Foundry reports that both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the Platinum Demo can dip below the target 30fps during some sequences; this was also true for the first public demo, Episode Duscae, which was released in 2015.

The PS4 edition performs at an average of 5fps better than the Xbox One version for the Platinum demo, but both versions struggle during some sequences. For example, in the final boss battle, the game can drop to as low as 15fps on PS4 and Xbox One.

Digital Foundry also explains that the PS4 version has a frame rate issue not found on Xbox One.

"Similar to Bloodborne, a faulty 30fps cap causes PS4 to render in new frames at irregular intervals, causing its frame-time to switch erratically between 16 and 50ms," it said. "As ever, this creates the perception of stutter where there should be none--a frustrating bug, and one that means Xbox One plays out more fluidly when it hits its target 30fps cap."

Since this is only a demo, it's possible things will change for resolution and frame rate for the game's final release. In fact, Square Enix has said it's spending time now polishing and optimizing the game for launch. Further still, game director Hajime Tabata has said the new Final Fantasy XV demo is not meant to showcase the game's technical prowess, exactly, but is more designed to give players a feel for the world.

Digital Foundry's full report has many more details, as well as images and videos. Read it here.

Final Fantasy XV launches in September 2016 for PS4 and Xbox One. A PC version could come later, but nothing has been decided. For more on all the announcements from last week's Uncovered event in Los Angeles, check out this roundup of stories and this collection of trailers.

@numinex10: Did you not read the article,

Digital Foundry also explains that the PS4 version has a frame rate issue not found on Xbox One.

"Similar to Bloodborne, a faulty 30fps cap causes PS4 to render in new frames at irregular intervals, causing its frame-time to switch erratically between 16 and 50ms," it said. "As ever, this creates the perception of stutter where there should be none--a frustrating bug, and one that means Xbox One plays out more fluidly when it hits its target 30fps cap."

In other words both versions are crappy looking. PC is the best place for this game. Highly recommend this on PC if you have the rig capable. Should cost much to have a system more powerful than the PS4.

@legendaryh1tman: I enjoyed kingdom hearts, the part in the room reminded me off wonderland and running the table fighting the heartless and turning into a truck was random.

and reading through the comments people think this demo is how the game will be when final fantasy episode duscae is the actual game and true demo.

the only connection this has to the game is for a little bit of backstory to add to the lore and when beating the platinum boss you get the lil creature as a minion dlc for 15, which is a nice touch and I hope comes across to 14 someday.

Ya i could def see that the resolution was better when you went into that giant room but still didnt seem as crisp as 1080p. Biggest problems are the crap AA used that kills detail, and the LOD is atrocious when something isn't right in front of the screen. Textures were bad as well. Low polygon environments. Not to mention the rain effects were awful. Seriously PS2 quality. The hold a button combat was kind of weak though im sure there is more to it in the final game.

It did have some good lighting, motion blur but they definitely need to fix the overall haziness, and upgrade the detail a ton. The soundtrack sounds like it will be great though.

Wasn't really impressed by the visuals or the performance. They really need to polish this out and do better with those post-processing effects.

@7tizz: When it hits its target 30fps. Both are capped at 30fps and PS4 runs 5fps better on average. Those two facts together mean that the XBone version only rarely hits that 30fps to present more fluidly.

Doesn't really matter. This is beta and the game will be further optimized. Frankly though, I find these reports disappointing for both consoles (no, I'm not a PC master race person...I play on all).

I didn't play the first demo cause I never bought Type 0.

I played the Platinum Demo on PS4 this weekend and came away a bit disappointed.

The frame rate was fine. I never noticed any issues. However the environments didn't seem to have much detail. Which was weird for a sequence where you're in a dream.

I didn't like the combat much either. Since when is FF using a hack-n-slash type combat system? I'll reserve final judgement until I see how more of the game plays out.

@sladakrobot: Prompto(Noctis best friend and a character in your party in the main game) has a revolver. Pretty sure you can't control him though, just command. You only have full control of Noctis, the main character of the game.

@sladakrobot: no you start as a kid and use a Toy Sword and Hammer as weapons. Then you morph into an adult and get a real sword and heavy weapon for fighting the boss. Only one character to play in this demo.

I was about to say they shouldn't release a demo pre-polish and assume gamers won't assume that's how the final product will play, but looking down at the comments, I already see that ship has sailed. Clearly nobody read the part about the game not entering its period of polishing and optimization yet. No game, on any platform, runs as well as it could without polish.

i miss a time when a game was measured & looked at by its gameplay and story more than its performance and resolution.

PS4.5 is just an admitment that the PS4 is already struggling to keep up with games that PC can run better and faster. If i bought one and now found out i need a new one because they released a pile of Sh*t in the first place id not be happy. 2 Playstations in less than 4 years! could of built a decent PC with the money and would still be better than the 4.5 and have your own choice when to upgrade. Not a console hater but it's becoming a joke. Just get a steam box or build a PC

@hardski7676: WTF is an "admitment"?

PS4 is not a pile of shit by any means. It's been a great gaming experience from day 1, and I like it just as much as my high end PC. Sony releasing a new one that's been upgraded is just Sony finding ways to continue competing and improving their product. Nobody expects a console to be able to render as well as the most extreme of the gaming PCs, but like 0.1% of the population has a PC like that, so nobody cares.

Anyhoo, does your PC go get you a towel when you're done sexing yourself about it? Grow up.

And Steam Boxes are garbage. Total garbage. If you're going to build a PC, build a PC. Don't buy any of the Stem Box nonsense.

@hardski7676: No, it's just a stab at 4K using Sony's standard Slim design with an unlocking of a couple graphical cores. The reality is every console has released multiple versions of the same unit every generation. There are 3 different 360's, for example, each one getting more efficient than the other. There's probably a few more. And the reality is 4K PC's are rare and represent a very small minority of the PC market. Of course, we all know most internet posters love to exaggerate.

@lonesamurai1: And that single GPU will still cost more than a PS4.5 for quite a while...several months, if not a year or more.

"They'll be telling you that buying their TV is the best way to play 4K properly with a console."

No they won't. I mean, sure, of course they'll have deals in which you can buy both together and such, but nobody is going to believe that somehow, magically, sony TVs produce better results with a PS4.5 than any other 4K tv. It depends entirely on the TV itself, not the brand. I doubt Sony will even bother trying that as a marketing strategy, particularly when people can go somewhere like cnet.com and get a quick review of tvs that will include tell you all about latency and processing issues noticed when computing and gaming.

@lonesamurai1: Nonsense. Name me an SLI setup that will cost less than $450 and will play in 4k. You won't see that for like 2 years at least. Moreover, you won't get a full PC that can do 4K for the price of a PS4.5 for even longer. If you don't understand that the price point is a deal-breaker for a lot of people, that's fine, but reality isn't interested in whether you understand it or not.

Also, quit it with the irrelevant stuff. Bringing up all you can do with a PC that's not gaming is irrelevant. When someone goes to the store seeking a console, they've already made the decision that they want a gaming-only product. Maybe they already have a high-end PC or a medium-level PC that does everything else that they need...maybe like me they just want the different options...but whatever the reason, they're not in the market for a multi-function piece of technology. Yes, everyone knows that PCs do more and different things than what a console does, but here's the thing: we always know when one of you self-aggrandizing PC "master race" slobs has been backed into a corner in this argument, because that's when you trot out the irrelevant "but it does all this other stuff" argument.

Your initial comment was about single GPUs becoming available that will pump out 4K like a PS4.5 will and which will be comparable in price...not to mention you calling everyone who owns a PS4 or might buy a PS4.5 "bozos". I corrected that and you've thus far provided no substantive counter because you know I'm right. Single GPU 4K solutions won't be in the PS4.5 price ballpark for some time, and the PS4.5, provided it works as advertised, will be providing a comparatively affordable alternative to an expensive PC rig for the the purpose of gaming for some time to come.

And newsflash: bold is not cruise control for correct.

@Barighm: 4.5 won't be able to play games at 4K it's just for blu-ray and as for just unlocking cores ur crazy. All the different versions of 360 and PS3 didn't offer anything different except it's design and price. Sony geting desperate because they know PSVR need alot more power if it's ever gonna run well enough

@hardski7676: It can ALREADY play video and display photos at 4K. Where did you get this idea that they're not attempting this upgrade precisely to make 4K gaming available on it? That is, in fact, the ONLY reason for them to do this.

And no, don't cite me some rumor-mill bullshit from youtube or some ranting idiot on a PC-centric gaming cite. Even sites liek Kotaku state that the existing PS4 can output 4K video and photos and that this is intended to make the PS4.5 able to output games at 4K.

You people just make shit up as you go along to fit your biases.
