Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed a few new details on Final Fantasy 16 during the latest Final Fantasy 14 livestream.

During the latest Final Fantasy 14 Live Letter from the Producer stream, a few new details about the next mainline entry in the series, Final Fantasy 16, came out from producer Naoki Yoshida. The team has finished the main story scenario for Final Fantasy 16 and the English voiceovers are almost done being recorded. Unfortunately, Yoshida-san also said it's likely that Final Fantasy 16 will not make an appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2021. (TGS 2021 is scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 3.) The single-player game could be kept out of the public eye for a bit longer than we hoped.

This information comes from a translation via the r/FFXIV Discord channel of a conversation between Yoshida-san and Nier director Yoko Taro during the livestream. Translators via Twitter have also interpreted what Yoshida-san said during the stream, including the implication that next time he wants to show Final Fantasy 16 when it's ready.

Another FF game where the main character is really just a sentient hairdo with a body attached? Sweet?

Speaking of English voiceover. Do you guys prefer the English Voiceover or the original Japanese voice work?

@illegal_peanut: Thank you for such a question and i feel i need to response :-)

I play jrpgs since the '90s and it rarely happens that the english ost is as good or as the original japanse voice actors performed.

Exceptions were Working Designs ports of PCEngineCD, SegaCD, Saturn and PS1 jrpgs and very few other companies afterwards(like Hudson Soft/Nihon Falcon back then too). Never "felt" a such attention to ports since.

The price of that passion toward the projects, sadly, resulted in high costs and at same time not expected salesnumbers and Working Desings had to close the doors after only few years. 😥

English voice overs tend to sound like kiddy cartoons with all that cringy high pitched kiddy voices or the actors are bored to death while recording and read the text in a such unmotivating manner completely out of touch of the situation in the game, its embarassing.

If there is a possibility,i would always turn the japanese ost "on" and use english subtitles

@sladakrobot: In a fictional world, I tend to view the language of the developer as the canonical language of the fictional world. However, later FF's clearly show signs in English in-game (like the English signs in the diner and gas station in FF15). As such, it can be argued that the in-universe language of FF15 is English, and thus I would set the language to English.

For this reason, I played the Witcher games in Polish voiceovers because I consider the canonical language of the Witcher world to be Polish. However, a game based only on the Netflix adaptation probably would be different, their canonical language would be English.

I do make some exceptions. Despite Street Fighter 5 being made be Japanese developer Capcom, it takes place on Earth and it's far more likely that an international band of martial artists fighting together against M. Bison/Vega will be speaking English as their common language rather than Japanese. As such, I set SF5 to English voiceover.

@illegal_peanut: English… For video games, anyways. It throws things off in movies, because of the whole lip-sync issue.

As far as video games go, I’ve just never understood the point of listening to something in a language I don’t understand, and having to take my focus off of cutscenes, to read subtitles (yes, I can read fast enough, but why do any reading at all, when I can listen to someone speak a language I understand). A good English voiceover sounds exactly like what you think the characters would sound like.

I’ve just always found it weird when people say things like, “The original Japanese voiceover is amazing.” What is amazing about something you can’t understand?

If I babbled incoherently, but did it with a lot of emotion, would people say that it was amazing? It’s the exact same thing. A language you don’t know is nothing but babbling.

Sorry for all this. This subject has actually been on my mind recently, and you just happened to ask the perfect question for me to finally get out what I’ve been thinking. I’m not saying anyone is wrong to think the original VO is better. I just don’t get it.

This looks so generic Final Fantasy. More nonsense about crystals protecting kingdoms etc. The graphics look dated already: very VERY FF14. I'll keep an open mind, but..... meh

@tom_cat_01: Wouldn't be Final Fantasy without that stuff. Crystals, Espers/Aeons/Summons, you name it. People expect those to be in the games, and SquareEnix knows that too.

Anyway, we've only seen one trailer or so so far. Combat looks good to me, but really need to see more to get a more concrete idea about the game. I noticed the main character will earn powers from from Titan, Shiva, Ifrit, etc. and use them in battle. That reminds me of the way Mega Man uses powers, or the MCs in Scarlet Nexus use their allies' abilities.

Unclear if it's a solo game with no party members just yet, but if it is, I think that's an entirely new one for FF.

@armos: Which is weird because a lot of the aspects I associate with FF have nothing to do with any of those things. It's all about the feel of the world, and that's something most truly FF feeling games manage to nail before you even see a summon or hear anything about crystals.

It's hard to expect anything good from Final Fantasy these days, all pretty generic since FFX-2.

@DarkGothic: Which is sad because that's the last time we got a great turn-based/job system from the franchise. Well, World of FF too, but people forget that game exists even though it was quite good.

I don't even mind that we might not see a ton of the game this year. It will definitely come out in 2022. I'm not a huge FF fan outside of FFX, but this looks like a real labor of love, and I'm grateful they learned their lesson from KH3 and FF7 Remake by keeping the marketing close to their chest until it's near release.

@adamsesslerrox: There's nothing definite at all when it comes to a FF game release date... I expect it won't release until holiday 2023 at the earliest.

I have a really good feeling about this game. I have not had a good feeling about a mainline FF in a long time. I appreciate how they waited until they had something to show before they announced it.

@josefo: Wait, what? Tetsuya "fashionista-superzipper-leather-clad-over-the-top" Nomura is not involved?? This may mean that the game could have some actual character development. It definitely has my attention now.

The main character looks too much like Noctis though... Wish we could move away from the edgy teens into more mature-looking characters.

when it 10$ with everything i might buy it, just to not play just like XV the new combat style is turn off to me,

How ever diffrent FF7R combat is and fun to point it not FF gameplay and works horrible when you have 3 party member and 5+ enemies on screen at once it just dont work. i saw this kind combat coming after XII (mmo gameplay) then XIII (automated party member) which where decide to just start moving from FF gameplay. it only got worse XV ( i took offense to the "FF game for veteran players and new players" it was not for veteran player is solo aimed at new players or what ever exact phrasing was) i refused to play cause gameplay and I only played FF7R cause i waited how long to FF7 with current graphics. it would been instant classic for me if it had turnbased in fact I would payed 70$ again for it if there was turnbased option

And FF XV i know more people that refused to play FF game cause it was turnbased the, that played FFXV cause it hack en slash based that said it sucked then they liked it, and most people i know that lover FF and turnbased at that hated FFXV too

Turn based or gtfo till that time SQE is dead to me long with FF games going forward. and if turn dragon quest series to to a hack n slash then they will be dead to as developer/publisher much like konami and activision

@tsunami2311: I could not have said it better myself. SE really should be bring back some turn based games. These action games don't feel the same and they usually don't balance things well in doing so.

I can recall in FF7 remake the system didn't work well without everyone having a healing spell because of the way the little ATG you get from attacking/ etc. You could do what you wanted when you wanted. At least until about mid game, didn't even finish it due to this bad design.

There is a good reason games back then were thought of by many to be just better than games today. They had much more time to focus on story, gameplay, and rpg mechanics. Mainly because they didn't have to waste so much time and money on making the graphics or action based system balanced, which i can imagine is like a rubic cube.

I have always said it is easier to make a turn based game than anything else. It is almost like SE doesn't even look at the sales for other titles that do have this in mind. There is a strong demand out there for this, if only they cared to see it. I ask every year why FF Tactics has not been remade, despite being a massive favorite by FF fans.

If he wants Final Fantasy to be "instant buy" for me they had better make it turn-based. Since it's been confirmed that this will not happen I probably won't get it at all, considering how much I disliked FFVII "Remake". I'm so glad I was able to borrow that game from a friend. They really don't deserve my money.

RIP Final Fantasy

@Acheron18: .. yeah I'm sure it's logical to keep making the same type of game for over 20 years. I'm glad they're changing it up. Luckily for you you can choose between many great turn based FF's. FF is not dead. To you maybe.

@Thanatos2k: Entirely depends. If it's like animated TV shows then they tend to do the voice work first with concept art and storyboards THEN do animations. But i'm pretty sure they have the staff to do both at the same time to some extent.

@Thanatos2k: meh. ff has plenty of disjointed cutscenes with a ton of gameplay between filled with meaningless repetitive banter.

i agree it probably means the game is like 70-80% done but theres plenty chance to add new weapons and enemies and that fill space between start and objective

which is yayyy. it seems even if time is spent of remakes they still can do something new too. but i hope this will take place as gaming icon like ps12 ffs were.
