Final Fantasy 16 Will Be More Action-Oriented But Not At The Expense Of Its Story

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida also teased more adult themes in the upcoming RPG sequel's storyline.

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida appeared this week on the Tokyo FM radio show One Morning, where he briefly talked about the development of the upcoming game. Much like Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake, the latest chapter in Square Enix's long-running RPG series will be more "action-oriented," but not at the expense of its story.

"Final Fantasy XVI is quite action-oriented. It's a Final Fantasy featuring story and action," Yoshida said during the radio show as translated by Gematsu. "We really want players to enjoy the story, so we're preparing a mode for players who want to focus on story. Since we have quite the substantial support actions, we're of course preparing something easy to operate and smooth to play."

As for the actual storyline, Yoshida hinted at a tale of hardship that adults could relate to, as he felt that certain challenges could only be understood by an older generation that had experienced "the good and bad of reality."

"I'm from the generation that has been playing the Final Fantasy series from the first game in real-time. I'm almost in my 50s," Yoshida said. "I believe there are certain hardships that are experienced when becoming an adult, so I want to make the main theme of this game something that those who grew up playing Final Fantasy and understand reality can still enjoy, get something out of, and think about."

Development on Final Fantasy XVI appears to be going smoothly, as its reveal at last year's PlayStation 5 showcase had plenty of gameplay footage to show off. In a new recruitment page for Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix mentioned that basic development and scenario production had already wrapped up, with the team seeking new recruits to work on specific set-pieces using large-scale resources.

Final Fantasy XVI will once again launch exclusively on PS5 thanks to a timed-exclusivity deal between Sony and Square Enix. A PC release was briefly listed during the reveal trailer but it was removed shortly after.

For me FF is dead since FFX. Disapearance of the world map and action combat system replacing the good old tactic battles. Not much a RPG anymore. Some companies have no idea how to respect their older, loyal fans. Capcom took several years and several games to realize that completely changing the style of a classic game can ruin it. They practically killed the Resident Evil series by wanting to make it an action game. It looks like Square Enix is making the same mistake! Good luck with your new action game!

@riptal: "They practically killed the Resident Evil series" This is where I point out RE6 sold really well (as did FFXV) and then you go REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

@riptal: It was dead at X. As soon as the took away the deep customization it was over. The sphere grid and 2 slots for equipment is an absolute joke to this day.

@riptal: Kind of an apples and oranges situation though. When Capcom decided to take RE in the action direction, they created a GOAT tier singleplayer game, then followed it up with a GOAT tier co-op game. Squeenix didn't do anything close to that. Instead, they created a bunch of mediocre tripe. It wasn't until FF7R did they FINALLY make a good action FF.

It's also highly inaccurate to suggest the action REs nearly ruined the franchise. In reality, Capcom wasn't very high on the franchise after RE3 and the core team had a lot of bored devs tired of creating the same games over and over again. Not only did RE4 actually save the franchise, but the successes of RE5 and 6 helped ensure the franchise would live long enough to return to horror. The truth is NOT changing the games would have killed the franchise.

This is a far cry from what happened with FF where every game was somewhat different in some way and the franchise was at the height of its popularity during the turn based era. When people say they want turn based FF, they're not saying Squeenix CAN'T do good ARPGs, but that FF was at its absolute, distinct best when they were traditional JRPGs.

Perfect!

and if they wanted to do an action based series, it could have easily been a spin off of the FF name.

@deth420: They did: FF Adventure, Crisis Core (I think; it looks like an ARPG), Dirge of Cerberus. Type 0, Dissidia, I'm sure there are others I'm missing...

@Barighm: Damn I forgot about a lot of those. yeah see dammit, they could have left FF turned based.

I think it was to compete or have a similar offering to monster hunter.

@Thanatos2k: Failures? The game was a massive hit when it came out. The only failures they had was the development time prior.

@stunningham: Not really. Most of that early surge was the result of hype. Sales then fell off a cliff, that multiplayer game had curious people but it, too, went dead after a short time, and much of the interest for the game revolved around waiting for DLCs to plug in all of the game's plot holes. Most of the game's sales after that first year are the result of bargain bin sales.

@Thanatos2k: And keep in mind Squeenix announced the DLC just a few days prior to canceling it. In Japan, breaking a promise like that is a serious blow to your reputation, so you had to wonder just how much damage the game did for Squeenix to consider doing that.

@pmanden: It was not well thought-out, especially the magic and summon mechanics. And the holding down button for attacks. And the risk of death being almost close to nothing.

Yeah, the game felt really unfinished in more ways than just the sidequests and storyline.

Are we talking DMC levels of action or what? Because VX and FFVII Remake were already pretty action oriented.

@imajinn: Japanese companies think that the majority of western gamers don't like tactical/strategical games that requires patience and thinking. Only shooting, slashing and see things go boom. Can't blame them as the modern gamers do seem to have the attention span of a goldfish. Explains why Nintendo dumbed down the difficulty of Pokemon games over the years.

@imajinn: SE has ditched the idea of bringing classic FF into a more modern game, instead creating old-school FF games rebranded as Bravely Default.

So depending on what exactly you're looking for, either at the end of this month or never.

so more hack n slash action based combat? that dont work with parties? pass, this why I refused to play FFXV and wont play it. FF no long plays like FF game. and till SQE rememebers how FF games play I done.

FFBE is only FF game that play like FF gamemade in last decade, and that mobile gacha game at that.

And for record I HATE that the change the how "FF7" played in Remake but I liked graphics if I didnt want to play FF7 current graphics that took SQE 20 years to do I would never bought the remake, and probably wont buy the other parts till there like 20$ or less and who know when the other parts will be done

Will give Yoshi the benefit of the doubt here as what he did with XIV was a minor miracle especially in the time that he did it. But please o please just if it is action make sure it is nothing like XV or at least greatly improved upon. XV was goofy to play with the party members and everything going on.

At least they're still making turn based and tactics style RPGs in the Bravely/Octopath lines. Would love for Final Fantasy to go back that way, but between XV, XVI and the online variants, I doubt we'll get that again. Sad too. I enjoyed XV more than I thought I would, but still kinda hoped it would be more of an outlier.

@Barighm: I haven't been able to try Bravely Default 2. I really enjoyed BD1 up until the end and they did the weird repeat all the boss fights 6 times thing. Never got to try Bravely Second either, but I heard it was good. I really liked Octopath and I tried the Project Triangle Strategy demo last week and it seems pretty solid.

@thecupidstunts: I don't know because anything Nintendo is a black hole for me, but the arguments I'm seeing say they ditched all of the elements that made the first game unique and went for a drier, less feature rich combat/RPG mechanics style. That does sound a lot like something Squeenix would do.

It'll be at the expense of strategy instead.

It will probably be dumbed down like 15 they should focus on making a good game like they used to instead of making it accessible to everyone

@tbird7586: those two things aren't mutually exclusive. Plenty of good games are "accessible" to the greater population.

Also nothing was particularly hard about pressing up and down to select menu options. I love turn based games but lets be real there.

@mcnichoj: The hard part of turn-based combat is knowing what action to select, not unlike chess or backgammon or many board games which require you to select your next move instead of always going full-out (like monopoly or card games).

The reason that turn-based games have the fame of being easier than action games is because they have generally (from 1995 onwards) been balanced for avoiding grinding even for first-timers, and that if someone still finds it hard, they can still again grind to overlevel challenges. You cannot do that in most action games because if your reflexes or hand-eye coordination are not the required, no amount of grinding will help you.

An example of turn-based games that I consider hard are the Fire Emblem series (up until GameBoy Advance, I never experienced the ones on WiiU, DS and Switch) were very hard for my skill even on their "Normal" setting. Specifically for FE12, which had 5 difficutly settings, I never managed to reach the second half of the game on the 2nd difficulty of the 5.

@mcnichoj: FF might not have been very difficult in general, but there were some tough optional fights, and there are definitely challenging turn based games out there. It's pretty silly to imply turn based games are never that challenging.

@Barighm: True. I played FFX remastered a few years ago and one the last bosses (lady yunalesca) threw a surprising curveball at me that I had to pause the game, laugh and applaud her for outsmarting me.

Haven't had such a cathartic experience in any game since the Shadar boss fight of Ni No Kuni 1 or Knight Artorias boss fight from Dark Souls.
