Final Fantasy 16 Will Be More Action-Oriented But Not At The Expense Of Its Story

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida also teased more adult themes in the upcoming RPG sequel's storyline.

Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida appeared this week on the Tokyo FM radio show One Morning, where he briefly talked about the development of the upcoming game. Much like Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake, the latest chapter in Square Enix's long-running RPG series will be more "action-oriented," but not at the expense of its story.

"Final Fantasy XVI is quite action-oriented. It's a Final Fantasy featuring story and action," Yoshida said during the radio show as translated by Gematsu. "We really want players to enjoy the story, so we're preparing a mode for players who want to focus on story. Since we have quite the substantial support actions, we're of course preparing something easy to operate and smooth to play."

As for the actual storyline, Yoshida hinted at a tale of hardship that adults could relate to, as he felt that certain challenges could only be understood by an older generation that had experienced "the good and bad of reality."

"I'm from the generation that has been playing the Final Fantasy series from the first game in real-time. I'm almost in my 50s," Yoshida said. "I believe there are certain hardships that are experienced when becoming an adult, so I want to make the main theme of this game something that those who grew up playing Final Fantasy and understand reality can still enjoy, get something out of, and think about."

Development on Final Fantasy XVI appears to be going smoothly, as its reveal at last year's PlayStation 5 showcase had plenty of gameplay footage to show off. In a new recruitment page for Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix mentioned that basic development and scenario production had already wrapped up, with the team seeking new recruits to work on specific set-pieces using large-scale resources.

Final Fantasy XVI will once again launch exclusively on PS5 thanks to a timed-exclusivity deal between Sony and Square Enix. A PC release was briefly listed during the reveal trailer but it was removed shortly after.

So does this mean that FF16 will no longer focus on wonderful stories?

Square Enix has improved a lot with their action-based RPG elements.

FFXV was a great example on what you should not do when it comes to an action RPG game. I'm glad they've learned from their mistakes.

Anyone that has played Shadowbringers and saw how an MMO can surpass the majority of single player numbered titles in storyline and presentation KNOWS that Yoshida, his team and this game are 100% worthy of the hype. Will be the first time in a long time I'm really confident in a day 1 Final Fantasy purchase.

You can tell a lot of folks here are being drama queens or haven't played FFVIIR at all. I would rather we avoid going all out action game, but if it's an evolution of FFVIIR's gameplay, I'm good with that. You cant button mash in that game, and anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous.

@xultima226: A lot of people in the forums and in the reviews says otherwise. I've seen the gameplay and it looks unintuitive as hell. Ni No Kuni 1 had the similar issue with the hybrid combat system (I still liked that game though).

@cboye18: Did you play it? Trust me, anyone who genuinely believes it's a button masher is being ridiculous. You can find videos of people simply holding the attack button XV and winning.

You won't find a single video of someone spamming attack and winning outside of early on battles with troopers. Once you fight things like the Guard Scorpion, button mashing will get you killed, everytime.

You have to account for positioning, animation length, how to block, and parry proper. Despite this, it managed to maintain the complexity of the original's combat intact.

Ni No Link 1 WAS unintuitive, I found it rather frustrating and didn't finish despite the charming cast and setting. FFVIIR has a learning curve, but before long it all gels together very well. I think folks may have a hard time because they aren't switching between characters dynamically to use their ATB gauges.

It's technically the same game, but with real time strategic elements and allows you to attack and block without wasting ATB. Once you see it for what it is, its very intuitive.

Yay fantastic idea... Make a game exclusive to a platform that is next to impossible to acquire by normal means. Good luck selling any copies when most of the PS5's are sat in someone's garage until someone with too much money clicks buy on the Ebay listing at 3x retail price.

Sigh. Too bad. I really want another Great FF. FF15 was IMO the worst piece of trash to land in the FF series. Horrible story (that needed DLC, anime, and movies to make any real sense), MMO quest system, boring combat. Then FFXIIR came out and I was disappointed again. The story was good (at as good as the original) and left me wanting the next game (which is great) but the combat was just boring. All these "action" RPGs are just like hack and slash games. Yea it was hard in hard mode but even that became dull as I got farther in the game. I just want another amazing story with great old school JRPG combat. If the FFXIIR was just and remake with better graphics and the exact same story and combat it would have be so much better than what they are doing. That is my opinion on the matter.

*yawn* yet ANOTHER final fantasy game about kingdoms under threat and crystals keeping the kingdoms together etc. I remember back when they had original ideas and innovating concepts. Now it's just kingdoms and crystals and kingdoms and crystals like we're back re-hashing FF 1, 2, 3 etc AGAIN.

@tom_cat_01: The innovation is not in what the end-target is, but on how the story unravels itself. It's like saying that the game is not innovative because the spells are again called Fire, Fira, Firaga, Thunder, Thundera, Thundaga etc.

Heh,alot of japanese games and especially RPGs handles mature topics (nothing new here) but when 13-15yo looking characters are leading the story,it becomes silly to me.

Lets hope we have adult characters dealing with an adult story and i hope FF16 isnt tied forever to Playstation

@mcnichoj: I played only Destiny 1+2,i was younger then, the characters was still sprites, the game a sidescroller (battles) and as a player, the imagination was greater.

My next(and the latest) Tales game i played was Vesperia.

The characters are portraited typical japanese style(girlish looking male character, too young to be a knight character, cute underage looking girl, oversexualy presented "adultish" girl who is sick of attracting weirdos, a dog etc,etc..

I couldnt relate at all with Juri, the localized english voice was too "manly/deep" in context to his look and his body proportion was odd(upper to lower body)

And about the story...i dont even remember what was it about.

I might have an unpopular opinion but I feel FF15 was a fun game and I enjoyed every bit of its story, gameplay and sound. FF always have amazing stories that is one of main reason why FF is still popular. I am looking forward to playing this one as well and more action gameplay might be a welcome change.

Why do they even bother calling it Final Fantasy at this point? Might as well make an FPS during the colonial era and call it Age of Empires 4.

The story sounds encouraging. SE is right to recognize the Final Fantasy audience skews older and they are suggesting the characters will be adults with adult dilemmas. I got turned off JRPGs when the games featured more and more under-age girls with outlined crotches and panties. The stories are too often repeats of teenage themes of who am I, and making friends when you’re awkward, and that first kiss etc. We don’t need another Tidus or Vaan or Rush. FFXV had older characters but it was a boy gang and not really a step forward in story. Bioware tapped into the adult gamer experience with their stories and it‘s past time for Square Enix to do the same.

@cwyn: To be completely fair to XV, it got there at the end and you got to see them act like proper adults. I wish they could've cut some of the busywork out of the game and made that portion of the game much longer so that they functioned more like equal halves.

Sounds good. Story is crucial in FF games. Also I hope the combat is more involved and strategic than FF XV.

@brazzo09: It's not an assumption though. Them stating it will be more action oriented is pretty clear evidence that it won't be turn based and that it will play nothing like FFI-X. Therefore, I and a lot of older FF fans are completely uninterested because we know we won't get what we want.

@Acheron18: FF fan since the first game on the NES.... FFXII wasn't necessarily turn based and I loved it (knowing I'm in the minority). FFXIII was turn based but the Paradigm system was horrible IMHO. I was satisfied with FFXV because while the battle system was a little wonky, they tried to tell a good story that didn't turn fan favorite summons into airships. With FFXVI I just want a game with recognizable foes and a story that doesn't try to make/force real world situations in a fantasy environment.

@FallenOneX: I recently played FF13 and while I think the paradigm system is a rather convoluted real-time/turn-based combat system, there was still more tactical skills involved than holding down the attack button and teleport spam across the map (and death being a rare occasion). FFXV combat system feels clunky and not well thought-out, especially with how it handles magic and summon.

FFX still has the best combat IMO (Pokemon-style). FXII combat system can be fun but because how easily the gambit system can be abused, eventually it starts to feel like the game is playing itself. It also resembles too much of an MMO-esque style of combat.

@cboye18: I liked the idea of the paradigm system, I hated how they handled the job aspect of it and who got what job. It got to a point where if I had to fight an enemy twice, I just looked at the roster and looked for the character I hadn't needed to use for the past 8 hours. 9 times out of 10 they had some job that none of the others had with the dumbest ability that should not make a fight that was taking you 10 minutes before only last 5 seconds. I liked how summons were activated differently in FXV, but it does get old after the first few times.

"More Action-Oriented". In other words a dumbed down battle system where you fight and win by holding the A-button aka FF15 and FF13. Sigh. Why can't Square just do what they once did best? Please produce challenging combat with a deep combat system, as seen in for example in FF5.

I am playing FF9 at the moment, and though the graphics are seriously outdated combat is still fun and challenging.

I am so disappointed by modern FF. At least I have Persona. Here is hoping Persona 6 will be announced soon with turn-based, challenging combat.

@pmanden: Japanese games are imo the best in the industry when it comes to action-oriented (melee) games, but FFXV combat system must be one of their worst (I dare say even worse than that of FXIII). It's like Square purposefully dumbed the combat system down to accommodate for western gamers.

Games like Dragon's Dogma and Ys VIII: Lacrymosa of Dana shows how it's done. Even the hybrid turn-based/real-time combat system of Ni No Kuni 1 was better than that of FFXV.

BTW I'm also playing FF9 for the first time atm lol.

@pmanden: sadly thi will never happen, so FF is dead to me, other then possible get last parts of FF7R simply cause i waited 20+ years for current graphics for FF7 I am done with FF game as whole till SQE remebers what FF game plays like this Action hack n slash crap with party members that are auto and next to impossible to keep track of when it 3 to your party and enemies that are 4+

FF has not been FF since X, and argueable that X wasnt, but it was last FF game to turnbased XII was MMO/turnbase hybrid imo which was trash imo too but nothing compared to that came after and XV took crown there.

FF7R while I didnt like it combat and would seriously pay 60$ for Add on that bring back turnbased comeback like it was with ever X and Before. It worked better then XV, but i pretty sure it it was FF7 I would of stop playing after 5 hours.

@pmanden: I absolutely hated nearly everything about FF15 but loved nearly everything about 7 remake. They have pretty similar battle systems though. Sometimes a little tweaking here and there can do wonders. Maybe 16 will be tweaked in just the right way to capture your interest.

@noodles227: yeah I'm really hoping they make the combat more involved and strategic this time around. You can have non-turn-based, action combat and still have it be strategic. The sole fact of not making it "Press O continuously" is enough to tilt the combat from automatic and boring to something that requires more involvement.

If they make combat more like ARPGs, meaning where you assign different abilities or actions to different buttons and it's up to the player to use the abilities they want, when they want it, and have different enemies be vulnerable to different abilities, would make the game more strategic. I have not played FF 7 remake but from all the great things I read about it online, it seems they should focus on that combat system and improve it.

Guess I will just have to enjoy the classics. or buy someone else's game from now on.

But thanks for reminding me. forgot I bought this awhile back. I liked that they had the 2d\3d choice as well.
