Final Fantasy 7, 9, 10, And 12 Will Be On Nintendo Switch And Xbox One In 2019

The modern-era of Final Fantasy makes its Nintendo debut.

During the recent Nintendo Direct, Square-Enix announced plans to release Final Fantasy VII, IX, the X and X-2 remaster, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for the Nintendo Switch. Coming later in 2019, the series' most iconic entries will make their longtime debut on Nintendo platforms, offering fans the chance to play the long-running series in a new way.

Though the series found its footing on Nintendo platforms, it eventually moved to the PlayStation 1, with all following main entries remaining on non-Nintendo platforms since, including PS4, PC, and Xbox One. The last major release of a core Final Fantasy game on Nintendo platforms was Final Fantasy VI on the Super Nintendo. The announcement of today's re-releases on Switch is notable for the fact that it shows the largest focus the series has had on a Nintendo platform in sometime.

Not much else is known at this time, aside from the fact that they will be the most recent ports of each game from other consoles and Steam, and that they will also release on Xbox One as well. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age in particular is a standout, which is a port of 2017's stellar re-release. Along with these ports, we also saw news of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition--originally on mobile--in addition to an enhanced port of the FF compilation game World of Final Fantasy and updated Crystal Chronicles making their way to the portable console.

Well, on one hand, I REALLY don't want to buy the same mothereffing games for a twelfth time.

On the other, these games are easier to play portable now, so since my PSP is a fossil, this might be a better option to do that. We'll see...

@Thretosix: Actually, YOU blew it. Nintendo haven't gotten a core Final Fantasy title for over 20 years. Now that the curse is broken, Square Enix is FINALLY Final Fantasy titles to the Nintendo Switch. Final Fantasy VII and IX will be based on the PSOne original, while Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will be remastered in High Definition.

Your entitlement don't amount to the truth of the matter. Final Fantasy is back where it all begins... on a Nintendo system.

And they still technically haven't, unless FF16 is put on a Nintendo system. The newest game of this lineup, FF12 International Zodiac Job System, is ten years old. These aren't returns to Nintendo, these are port jobs.

@tdawgg30: not really... nintendo consoles are not powerful enough for the latest ff games lol... ff xv will never get a switch port, unless you like the gimped pocket edition. the next mainline ff game will also not be on a nintendo platform. that goes without saying... nintendo can only get OLD games on its platform when it comes to 3rd party support. this is just about money for s-e, not any sort of ff revival for nintendo or anything crazy like that.

If final fantasy 8's problem is a copyright issue for a song... What is the excuse for 6? Also, if song copyrights become an issue, we may be seeing a similar problem.with the kingdom hearts series and utada hikaru's songs soon.

@jbreez00: this is why a song should be forever licenced TO the game. Same with all merchandise, TOCA 3 cant be sold anymore, because of car licenses (that arent even in fckin production anymore lol). I think the law needs to rethink product licencing to movies and games and movies dont seem to run into this issue.

@mattienorton: It's mostly speculation from people about the vocal version of eyes on me, but there's also something about the source code that's possible.... Since sqaure apparently loses parts of source code regularly.

@jbreez00: hmm I never knew about square loosing source code but I supposed it's possible. Perhaps that's the true reason we dont have 6 either. I started with 8. Fell in love with the series and the story. Sure it was a little confusing but not as bad as Ff12-2 lighting returns.

I still havnt played through all of 15, but I'd love to pay through the classics I grew up with forgot buying a PSP hack it, or buy the PC copy I already own but is God awful old. Lol

I've heard alot about the copyrights also. Seems us the fans need to file a petition and demand it be made. We need 6 and 8.

too bad the only good FF games are the pre-3D ones anyway, mostly 4, 5, and 6. And I mean 4, not "2," the dumbed down version of 4.

@soliaired50: Cloud was actually added to smash because he won a poll for who to add. The thing is, the poll had people fill in the blank rather than choose from a list. I didn't think Nintendo would add someone that didn't have a game on a Nintendo platform.

Finally!! Final Fantasy VII on a Nintendo platform! I saw Crystal Chronicles, FF XV Pocket Edition, the Chocobo game and World of Final Fantasy and was like "Oh come on still getting the Final Fantasy spin off games." Then the magic happened, XII, then VII, IX, X & X-2. The flood of Final Fantasy games along with Animal Crossing made my entire year. That was better then almost every E3 I have ever watched. This makes me wonder if Kingdom Hearts maybe coming along at some point as well. Sora in Smash would be so brilliant... Tidus.. Sephiroth..

Well, most of these are based on other ports, and while 9 was redone for the PC/ps4 recently, 8 has a slightly buggy PC port that would be really difficult to port to the switch. The original 8's PC version from 1998 was notoriously difficult to get to work on even windows xp/7, with even 3 hours of community patches getting nothing more then a black screen, so I'm not surprised there's no 8.
