Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo Out Now On PS4, Gets You A Free Theme

The demo will include all of Chapter 1 from the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive.

After its existence was previously leaked, the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo is now officially out on PlayStation 4. You can download it from the PlayStation Store for free.

The store description states that the demo encompasses the first chapter of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which includes the now memorable Mako Reactor 1 bombing run that introduces Cloud to the Avalanche eco-terrorist group, and many of Final Fantasy VII's main characters. It ends with the Guard Scorpion fight.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Official Opening Movie

The description also notes that your progress will not carry over into the final game--which launches on April 10--and that some content may differ from the final product. Downloading the demo by May 11 will also entitle you to download a free PS4 theme, which will become available on April 10. You can get a peek at what the theme looks like below.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake demo leaked in January, and allowed data miners to uncover numerous details about the game that hadn't yet been revealed. This remake was initially meant to launch this month, but was delayed to the beginning of April for additional polishing time. We recently got hands-on time with the first three hours of the anticipated remake, which included new looks at the action-orientated combat and companion abilities in a saga that Square Enix wants to continue for generations.

As an old time gamer who´s memories from playing the original is clear as day. This demo brought back memories.
I would say the remake stays true to most of it. The very important Music, the enviroment, cutscenes and much more.. The combat is not the same anymore as pointed out. By selecting "classic" i thought it would be turn based like the original but it was not. That is my only gripe with this game, but i will have to adjust to it and say nothing else. I do not want to fret about nothing with this game, why..?
Because, this is a game the fans have been pestering Square-Enix to remake. so i would say, shut your pie holes and enjoy what you been asking about for YEARS! This remake product exists partly because of YOU fans!!
Looking forward to replay my favourite game of all time in a brand new updated skin.

@Sindroid: Same. I was in high school when FF7 released and before that I only ever played arcade type games. My school friend was hyped about it and tried to describe it too me. When he got to disc 2 he gave me the first disc to play... and it genuinely changed my whole perception of what games could do. I was in love.

Playing the demo made me feel like I did back then. It's changed in ways because the gaming world has moved on and it needed to, but in other ways it's eerily identical. It's like what I imagined the game to be as a kid.

Being episodic is a big downer, but I fully understand. Making games today is nothing like it was on the PS1. I just hope they stay true to the original and manage to finish it all on a good time scale.

Some love the hack & slash combat system, some hates it. Everyone is entitled for their opinion. For me the combat works well with the remake. I truly enjoyed playing the demo and can't wait for the full release.

I read an article on Gamespot that mentioned Tifa and Aerith, but I'm pretty sure they're not playable in this demo...

I think that was the Gamespot article where they were talking about their 3 hour play session they got with the game in a preview build, and not the demo everybody else is getting.

This is how a remake should be done. Yes, I love the original, but this demo is amazing. I can’t wait for the full game. The combat feels awesome and despite looking similar to Final Fantasy XV’s combat, is not like it at all. Idk what to tell the people who are trashing it. Apparently some of you don’t like awesome things. I know that some of you are going to hate this game just for the sake of hating it.

I've played the original at least 5 times and it's my favorite game of all time, no question. I've just finished playing the remake demo and thought it was cool. I never write reviews or comment, but for this game I almost feel compelled to throw in some words, considering it's THE game of my childhood. After playing the demo, i just wanted to keep playing. I don't share the negative views being posted here. On the contrary, I thought the game seemed very very cool and was an 'upgrade' from the original. Although it was only a short demo, I can safely say the new remake intro was, so far, even better than the original. That's my opinion anyway. If anyone from Square Enix reads this, THANK YOU for doing this. Best game ever, and amazing demo --- thank you

@NorwegianPrince: Same here. I hope the game is just as good outside of this particular segment (when Midgar will open up to you, when the materia system gets introduced etc.). I'm positively surprised, but they can still **** it up (yea, that's the pessimist in me). I hope Square Enix got it this time, though. I can certainly see this be as good a remake as RE2 was, or even better.

Tried the demo the combat just ruins it for me plain and simple, I was disgusted by FFXV combat and now SQE went to took something like FFXV combat and infected FFVII with it. Voice Acting is bad imo too.

Look amazing but sadly this action combat system DOES NOT WORK for FF GAME where you have 3 party members. Classic mode is not even remotely anything like the classic game, and there other modes are just trash like FFXV is.

Wont preorder this wont buy it a full price, all parts will be released in one package for less then 20$ before I even think about getting this.

If they left the damn Combat system ALONE I would preorder/ bought it day one collector edition etc but this this just leave sour taste in my mouth.

Thank you SQ for take one my favorite childhood games and turning into something IT IS NOT with this trash you call combat systems these days.

As someone that enjoyed the original, I didnt care for the remake. interms of the combat, I liked the turn base style of the series. they have switched to the action oriented style. Which for this series I dislike.

They shoehorned in "classic" style combat (which they tell you sets it at easy setting, why I dont know) and it essentially just attacks for you. which left you to do nothing really.

If you wanted a Monster hunter competitor you should have spun off a new series. instead of ruining the formula of what got the series here in the first place....end rant.

Well, I'm not very excited for this, but I won't say no to a free demo - smart move to issue one. I've "discovered" a lot of games I didn't know I really wanted over the years thanks to demos. Maybe SE will surprise me and get a sale

This particular segment of the game, at least, was honestly like ten times better than the original in almost every single possible aspect - except in terms of exploration, which was about the same or maybe slightly worse.

I'm still very hopeful for the final release now.

I'm sorry to say that the combat was every bit as bad as I expected it to be.

You either play normal mode which is just a button mashing action crap fest that has nothing to do with FFVII, or you play classic mode where you feel like you're not even playing the game yourself.

Also, Barrett's dialogue is atrocious and they retconned the story so that Avalanche isn't responsible for the reactor explosion, effectively removing some interesting moral ambiguity from the game.

I guess I'll maybe pick up the complete edition on a Steam sale in 10-15 years.

@Acheron18: I think you should seriously put down those rose tinted glasses... The combat, from a mechanical standpoint, was way deeper in this 1 hour demo alone than the entirety of the original Final Fantasy VII. I'd really like to see where button mashing would actually get you - that's right, nowhere. The Spiderbot would whoop your ass on normal, let alone if hard mode is added (which i'm sure it will be). The boss fight has many more mechanics than the original one could ever dream of and if this is an indicator of how good boss fights will be in this compared to the original, I'm very hopeful. The only thing I'd do, is reduce the number of restoration items in this level.

They still did destroy the reactor, Shinra just helped out a little more. There's certainly no moral ambiguity lost here, if anything, it could add some more to the whole Midgar story-line.

@Berserk8989: There's nothing rose tinted about my glasses (that I don't have). I enjoy turn based games just as much today as I did 20 years ago and that includes FFVII.

The problem I have with the combat of this game, aside from being too action focused, is that you have a party of three characters but you can only control one at a time. Sure, you can order the others to execute certain commands but when it comes to attacking, moving, blocking and dodging you can only do that with one character. The others are controlled by AI, which I find extremely boring. Why have three characters in a party when the game is playing two of them by itself. I want full control of all characters.

Your argument about Shinra is just silly. In the original, Avalanche caused the plate to drop. In the remake they didn't. I you don't consider that a big change in the story I don't know what to tell you.

@Acheron18: But you can control all the party members (not can, but HAVE to) and switch to them in an instant and do with each what you want, you don't even have to wait for some turns to end, since it's real time with pause - AI only goes into cover for certain mechanics and auto attacks, that's it. You still have to do everything else. In the original you did the same, just that you have to attack now in between with attack combos (depending on the character, since each is different to a degree) and position yourself. If this style of combat is too hard or complex for you, you still got classic mode which is much easier and almost as simplified as in the original game.

No, your argument about Shinra is silly - They cause the plate to drop later in the game, when Avalanche attacks reactor 5 iirc. It does not happen here at the beginning of the game. The plate drop will still happen in the Remake.

@gargungulunk: Chapter 1 does not mean the end of the first game. It's just the end of the demo.

The game is divided up into "chapters".

I'm going to say that this is not the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, this is the Crisis Core Sequel. A somewhat academic differentiation but its soul is definitely shared with Crisis Core.

I'm fine with this, I really enjoyed Crisis Core.

Ugh its not even recognizable. Shoulda nixed this idea when they lost the original 3D assets.

Get FF7 for pc. Install the Remako mod which upscales all backgrounds and textures using AI. Looks phenomenal now even on 4k. Play the og because this, without the prospect of escaping Midgar until whenever the next "episode" releases years down the road, makes my desire to play this pretty much gone.
