Final Fantasy 7 Remake Is A Timed Exclusive On PS4

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is exclusive to PS4--for now.

It appears the much-anticipated upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a timed-exclusive for PlayStation 4 and will come to other platforms later, although no specifics have been confirmed regarding a possible Xbox One or PC release. New box art for the game recently appeared online, stating clearly and plainly that the game is exclusive to PS4 through March 3, 2021. [Update: This date may have now shifted, as the PS4 release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been delayed until April 2020.]

Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on March 3, 2020 for PS4, so it appears the deal that Square Enix and Sony struck was for a period of one year. By March 2021, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett are expected to be in the market, so it seems the Final Fantasy 7 Remake may be a cross-generation game. After all, Square Enix has already said the game will be playable on PlayStation 5.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Is Coming To Other Platforms - GS News Update

Officially, Square Enix has only announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PlayStation 4. The company has not commented yet on the appearance of the new box art. You can see this new art in the image below, as spotted by internet super-sleuth Wario 64.

Now I know how long I have to wait to get this on Steam. Was seriously considering getting a PS4 Pro just so I could play it sooner. A year ain't too bad and the new GPUs should be out by then! Not that I'll need a new GPU to play it, just the icing on top.

Can this be fake?

I mean, it gives us PC folk an easier time to just flat out wait until the entire series is finished, but this stings hard.

Platform exclusivity for the sake of exclusivity just needs to stop. It's completely anti-consumer.

@DAOWAce: But multi-billion-dollar companies don't care about being pro-consumer. They're "pro-money."

@zmanbarzel: But they would make a shit ton more money by simultaneously releasing this game on every platform, instead of holding it hostage on one platform for an entire year.

@Simulator_Shock: Unless the owner of that one platform is cutting them a check so big it more than makes up for those sales (either in actual money or in the form of advertising/marketing or lowered per-unit licensing fees).

I can't help wondering if Square-Enix will try to port this to Switch.

This isn't "News". Go back to the original unveiling at Sony's E3 2015 presser - Adam Boyes says at the end "Coming First to PlayStation". We've known all along this meant it would also be on PC for sure - it doesn't automatically mean it's also coming to Xbox One. However, with the recent announcement of all the old FF games coming soon to Game Pass, perhaps Square-Enix will be tracking engagement numbers to see if there's enough interest from Xbox players to warrant releasing FFVII Remake on XB1 down the road.

@Furwings: yes but the article has an actual date so its good to know how long people need to wait. FF games have allways sold well on xbox this is just more shady timed exclucive nonsense that both companies do but both say they dont. Its as bad as microtransactions.

Are there people out there who are thinking,"Time exclusive? I better buy myself a PS4 so that I get first dibs on this game!"?

@nefphlegm: It worked for Crash among other things. People lack patience plus don't want stuff to be spoiled (although my second point doesn't work in this scenario).

@gamingdevil800: It's a shame that gamer patterns like lacking patience is why companies continue to follow practices that leave all other gamers out of the picture. I am of the frame of thought that if your console is REALLY as good as you advertise then sharing that IP with the rest of the gamer universe shouldn't be a problem.

I do understand that business is business so there's always that argument before anyone wants to counter that point.

I was going to wait until they finished the entire game anyway, so who knows what consoles I'll have by then.

Anyone that supports "chapters" releases of this game is crazy. Until the full game is out no one should buy into this. This is bad practice and may create precedent if it sells well.

@batusai4ever: Precedent? Isn't it too late for that? Most AAA games are already being sold this way and most gamers, unfortunately, seem to be okay with it. Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Grid, Most Ubisoft and EA, Bethesda titles, they are all sold to consumers in pieces.

@ahpuck: There aren't actually that many episodic games these days, but I don't think FFVII is going to set any kind of "precedent" that the industry is going to suddenly adopt. I think this game is coming out in chapters because of how expensive it is to make a game the size of FFVII with modern tech and for a market that nobody really knows the actual size of.

It doesn't look that good anyways, so I don't think Xbox fans are missing much by not having an early entry. I agree that 3rd-party companies need to stop doing this anti-consumer crap though.

Just drop it on both at the same time. Such stupid deals. Sure, I'll play it on the ps4 but would also love for friends on the xbox to get to play it at the same time. If its not an exclusive then just stop with that timed nonsense.

Oh Sony...what happened to "we dont need to make such deals" after MS made the Tomb Raider deal with SE? And not to speak about the outrage in the net!

3 years later Sony made over 7 similar deals (and gets a pass) and in the past Sony was the exclusivity deal king per se.

Still waiting to read about how long Shenmue III is tied to Sony

@Barighm: Sure, during the X360 era they done alot of deals.
MS did mainly i guess deals with games like COD and i admit, since i never ever played COD/MW,i never thought about the problem other plattforms getting content later.
The thing is,MS never said they wouldnt do it just to act the oposite.
Also i dont think MS did any worse than Sony,Sony bought devs left and right just to prevent other plattforms getting their titles for years or forever.

When they first announced it, it said play first on PS4, that means that since then it was a timed exclusive.
