Pre-order Final Fantasy VIII Remastered for PC

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered has a new trailer out of Gamescom, and it's finally given us a release date for the upgraded version of Square Enix's beloved PlayStation RPG. You can watch it above.

The remaster, which was announced during E3 this year, is due out on September 3 - just two weeks away. It's coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. It's a substantial polish on the old game, removing a lot of the blur that led to some classic memes.

This is the final PlayStation-originating Final Fantasy game that was yet to be remastered and released in HD, with Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX having already been updated for modern consoles. There's been speculation that the source code for Final Fantasy VIII was lost, which would also explain why the game's glow-up is so dramatic.

If you're a 90s PlayStation fan, prepare yourself for a burst of nostalgia soon.

FF8 was one of my least favorite in the series. Sure, the story was good, but several aspects of the gameplay made it tedious to play.

I hated the fact that:

1) The monsters would level up at the same rate as the characters, so grinding to beat a tough enemy was virtually useless.

2) The character to make the killing blow got more experience. This made it very difficult to keep your characters evenly leveled because the stronger characters usually got more experience, thus making them even stronger still. In order for the weaker characters to keep pace, you had to hold your stronger characters back.

3) The only way to obtain spells was to "draw" them from monsters. This was very tedious, as you had to travel around to different locations just to "stock up" on the spells you need.

I suffered through the game once already, and that was quite enough, thank you very much.

Why anyone would want to play this is beyond me.

You might have noticed in the trailer they released, they only showed CG and combat. Combat is 100% polygonal graphics. They did not show the backgrounds on the field screen, which are 2D. They almost certainly look bad because of the low resolution, which no remaster is going to fix because they don't have the source assets anymore.

The original game's art is at 240p which will look awful on a 4K or even FHD display.

I’m wondering how they will handle the pocket station games Or if they will dummy it out and add the items as separate in game rewards. The original kept the entire feature which made it impossible for western fans to get the items. However the PC version had it as it’s own little application.

I am honestly curious how they will handle it for the console releases. They could take the mini application approach but unlike the PC version that would require a player to completely exit Final Fantasy 8

@Infinity_Bowman: Nothing will beat its original form. A nice cleanup is all it needs.

@ballashotcaller: Wouldn't ever suggest the original could be "beaten."

@malachi: The word 'remaster' is so vague these days that a port counts as a remaster now as long as the display resolution is higher than the original's.

Can’t wait. I’ve played just about every Final Fantasy and 8 has always been my favorite. I’ve been dying for them to bring it back around.

Awesome. I loved that game back on the PlayStation and am really looking forward to playing it again, this time on the Xbox One. However September was already crowded enough before. Ugh.

@shadowwarrior4: August 27th, Control & a new rpg, August 30th Man Of Medan & Astral Chain, September 3rd Catherine Full Body & FFVIII, September 6th MHW DLC, Bards Tale IV & Gears 5, September 13th Borderlands 3 & Daemon x Machina, September 20th Links Awakening & Ni No Kuni, September 24th Contra & Surge 2.

Then finally the worst day of all being September 27th which has the improved version of Dragon Quest XI for switch and Code Vein. Honestly I don't know how I'll decide between which of them to play first, I'm not buying all the games I listed but I'm getting quite a few and this doesn't include Oct, Nov and December.
