Final Fantasy 8 Remix Album Out Now, Listen to Samples Here

The classic RPG was released in North America seventeen years ago this week.

While Final Fantasy fans still have a while longer to wait until Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake are released, they can now pick up a new album featuring remixes from the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack.

No Caption Provided

Released this week, Successor: Final Fantasy VIII Remixed is a six-disc, multi-hour collection that was created by more than 150 composers, arrangers, and YouTube personalities (full credit list here) who have provided their own take on the game's soundtrack. It was originally composed by Nobuo Uematsu, but the new arrangements are described by production company Materia Collective as "unique and imaginative."

That is indeed the case, as you can hear for yourself in preview samples embedded in this post.

As its name suggests, Successor is the second Final Fantasy music remix album from Materia. The first, Materia: Final Fantasy VII Remixed, was released in October 2015.

"After our debut album Materia, choosing Final Fantasy VIII as a follow-up tribute album was the next logical choice, and aligning the release with the game's release anniversary seemed poignant," Materia founder Sebastian Wolff said in a statement. "Final Fantasy VIII is musically distinct, and its eclectic mix of music suited our diverse skillsets."

Successor is available on a number of digital music platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, and Loudr.

This was a special week for Final Fantasy VIII, as February 11 was the the seventeenth anniversary of the day the game was released in North America in 1999.

Leave a comment below to let us know what you think of these remixes!

I know a lot of people hated 8, but it had the best music. Faye Wong - "Eyes on Me" FTW

Just played through this game on Steam last month. Didn't get all the triple triad cards like I did back in the day when it came out on the PSone, but I still played the Hell outta it. Fantastic game.

This is awesome, FFVIII is one of my favourite Final Fantasies, and probably my favourite soundtrack. I'm such a sap, I love the Eyes on Me track so much, it's nice hearing other renditions.

@Rufus_the_rat: Yes, SQEN takes ~30% of the gross income though, then ~20-30% goes to other costs so all 160+ involved all share the rest depending on how much they worked on a piece. So in maybe two or three months we will be able to buy the album for ourselves (since copyright doesn't allow us to get free copies of the album ourselves..........)

@Grim_Jackal: Yikes. I hated that track. That and the Triple Triad music which was the game rubbing my frustration in my face.

@lostn: The remix or the original? It's no Main Them from Final Fantasy VII, but when it builds to that sweeping section it's just glorious.

@Grim_Jackal: Original.

Are you talking about Blue Fields? I've never allowed myself to listen to it long enough to get to the sweeping section, so I guess I've just not noticed it. It played on the world map, which meant it was played a lot, making me hate it even more.

FF7's world map theme (pre-meteor) was so much better.

it feels just like it was yesterday that I was playing FFVIII on my PS1. I still remember the fun I had with the game, taking the SeeD Exams to raise your rank and get more allowance, switching around GF, and looking for draw points for magic. Also loved the soundtrack it had. Really loved that game, I really hope that SE will release the updated version for the PS4 also

I'm always interested in hearing the before and after stories when someone says a game changed their life.

@lostn: I was hit by a car(they ran a red light) which sent me into oncoming traffic. I was able to steer out of it because I instinctively applied the same steering physics from all the racing sims I used to play.

Also, my best friend nearly cut his thumb off and severed a tendon doing so. His doctor said he'd never be able to use his hand in any meaningful fashion again. A couple years later after some Goldeneye 64 therapy, he now has full use of his thumb.

@Zombrex: That's quite interesting. Particularly the part where you learned to drive from playing a game. I've learned more about WW2 history from playing CoD than from history class, but I've never learned how to do something from a game better than actually doing it in real life.

I take it you have a racing wheel and are very into driving sims?

That's all fine and dandy but I would be MUCH happier to see maybe a FF8, (and also FF9 FF12) remastered port release on PS4. I mean I'm sure FFXV & FFVII Remake is top priorities but I would love to be able to relive those classics on the PS4. FFVII port is tremendously smooth on PS4 and the new little features Square added made my favorite game of all time that much better. Anything related to FF is more than sought over in my opinion and I can't wait to continue to expand my library of the best series EVER in the RPG genre.

It was released in Japan in Feb of 1999. North America was 9/9/99. I very clearly remember the advertising.

There are so many awesome Final Fantasy remix albums out there. I actually had my photo taken with Nobuo Uematsu at Distant Worlds and he signed my FFIII SNES cartridge.

@Jimbowesker: I was the same as you. Did it live up to your expectations though? Because it didn't mine.

I remember GS (videogames.com at the time) had reviewed the Japan version in Feb, and gave it 9.5 saying it was the best game to bear the Final Fantasy title. You can't imagine how excruciating the hype was during those next 7 months... No game could possibly have lived up to that hype.

And after that, I rarely got hyped for games again.

@lostn: No it didn't mine either. I disliked the changes to the battle system and the plot and characters weren't as captivating as FF7. The world also lacked interest of exploring in my opinion. I was disappointed as well and have yet to enjoy a single play through as I did with FF7. Here's to hoping FFXV brings it back!!
