Final Fantasy 9 Out Now On Switch, Final Fantasy 7 Coming Next Month

The PS One Final Fantasy games are finally coming to a Nintendo console.

Among all of the Nintendo Direct's news, Nintendo revealed the release dates for a trio of classic Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VII is launching for Switch on March 26, while the FF spin-off Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy is also set to release next month, on March 20. However, fans won't have to wait that long to play Final Fantasy IX; that game is out now on the Switch Eshop for $21 (in the US).

Back in September, Square Enix announced it will bring a slate of modern-era Final Fantasy games to Nintendo Switch (as well as Xbox One) in 2019, including the classic PS One entries Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX. The former was recently featured in a new Switch commercial that teased it would hit the console "soon."

Beyond those titles, Square Enix is also bringing Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII: The Zodiac Age to both Switch and Xbox One this year. The X and X-2 HD Remaster collection will arrive on April 16, with Final Fantasy XII following several weeks later, on April 30. The publisher has also previously announced a PS4 and Switch port of Final Fantasy: The Crystal Chronicles, but no release date has been confirmed yet.

That wasn't the only Square Enix news to come out of the latest Nintendo Direct. We also learned that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will launch for Switch this fall, while the Minecraft-like spin-off Dragon Quest Builders 2 is coming on July 12.

my days. swtich isnt the first portable console where you can/could play final fantasy on the go...... i understand why you peeps get them feels and so cool im playing 7/9 on the go etc etc

i had them feels when playing them on the vita..... well i have 2-9 on the vita and ff 1 on the psp ......

The price is reasonable. Anyone who has been exclusively Xbox/Nintendo the last 20 years is getting these old games for the first time. They have achievements too. I know PS4 has these games too, but I'm saying the novelty of playing these old PS1 games on Xbox might justify the premium.

Nobody bitches about how Nintendo pricing everything like this. At least on Xbox we should get a sale within six months halving the price. I imagine it will be $20 on Switch forever. Might drop to $15 in the odd sale but even that, ill believe when I see. We should get multiple chances to nab these games at $10 a piece in about 12 months on Xbox. Patience pays.

This is huge, couse we can play FF with the best mobile console on the market.

Thats the only reason, I guess not much people play the switch as TV console... the only reason would be the few exclusives...

@mari3k: I purchased FF IX immediately. It was a lot of fun playing it today during my daily commute. FF on the go is an amazing option and i cant wait for them to release FF VII(crossing my fingers for FF VIII one day). I love my Switch and only play in handheld mode because of my daily commute.

Yeah I can't in good conscience spend that much on beloved FF games right now. I don't really have the time for it right now anyway.

I regret buying the Steam versions of 7, 8, 9 and 10. Steam sucks. If I'd known they were coming to the Switch, I'd have waited - and I might be more willing to drop the twenty+ bucks on them. But at least Steam offered them at a more reasonable price.

@Lord_Sesshy: i played 8 on the go with the vita, still got the ps1 discs and ps1 ... its also my all time fav, they did good with rinoa and squall in dissidia psp and more so in ps4.... in case you havnt seen they look just as good as cloud does in advent children

so they got the base designs down if they wanna go next gen they shown 8 can be done over

@Flyin3lvl: That reminds me, I need to pick up FF8 for the Vita. I guess that's really the only way I can play it now lol. And I just looked up the Squall Dissidia character and yeah they look amazing. Just makes me more sad that they will probably never do a remake, but here's hoping.

@Lord_Sesshy: I hope they remake it, but Square has mentioned that it would be tough to bring FF VIII back just because they would probably have to build it from the ground up. I don't know if VIII has enough fans to make it worthwhile for Square, but i hope they do it anyway for some fan service.

PSA: FFIX still has terrible low resolution backgrounds, but the PC version has a few mods that lessen the blow a bit (the most recent ESRGAN one is pretty fantastic).

@bentleyj10: they are just talking about the Switch version because it was a Nintendo Direct that they’re reporting on. I know you are trying to get people to play the Xbox version instead but they don’t need to advertise that version if that wasn’t the one discussed today

Now I wonder when FFIX is coming to Xbox. I thought they would release in sync but not sure.
