Endgame turnaround closes King Of The Hill tournament By Cliff Hicks
In Gamespot's King Of The Hill tournament with Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle-Earth II, John "DeadDorf" Westendorf came from behind to beat Sandell "ReusableGore" Wall III and Devin "Terrin" Herritt for the $600 Best Buy gift certificate first place prize on Friday. ReusableGore finished second, winning a $300 Best Buy gift certificate and Terrin finished third, winning a $100 Best Buy gift certificate.
Reusablegore came out swinging, rushing for the flag first, capturing the flag for the early game as he repelled attacks from Terrin. Reusablegore started to reinforce the center ground, trying to establish it as he was fighting off attacks from both opponent. Deaddorf was able to sneak into the area and hold the flag for a little over a minute before Reusablegore reclaimed the area, fortifying as best as he could.
"You can't turtle up," senior editor Jason Ocampo said. "You have to start taking risks from the beginning."
Over the next few minutes, it looked as though Reusablegore was going to keep the center in a lock. For several minutes, he repelled a handful of incursions, including one which gave Deaddorf a few precious seconds onto his total before Reusablegore reclaimed the center section.
After several assaults, Deaddorf and Terrin pushed into the center, with most of Terrin's forces being wiped while Deaddorf took control of the center. The battle wiped Reusablegore out very heavily and he had to attempt to recover while Deaddorf dug into the center. Through several buildings and aggressive tactics, he pushed Terrin away from the center, and made an attempt to control the middle.
Terrin continued to try and push in to claim the center, but Deaddorf put several towers up and extended the fight away from the flag itself. Despite a last minute push from both Terrin and Reusablegore, trying to reclaim the flag at the very end, Deaddorf controlled the flag for the last third of the game, finishing with an 8:24 hold time, beating Reusablegore's 8:02 hold time.
"Mostly I just had better income," Deaddorf admitted. While he admitted some nervousness about whether or not he waited too late to come in, he said that he was pleased to finally win, after having a losing record against most of his friends in RTS games.
Gamespot Tournament TV's next tournament will be on August 11th with a Counterstrike: Source tournament sponsored by Stride.
