Firaxis teases new project

Civilization studio shows teaser trailer for "big" project that won't be discussed for "a while."

BOSTON--Civilization V and XCOM: Enemy Unknown developer Firaxis Games today teased its next major project.

Before debuting a teaser trailer for the game during a PAX East panel today, designer Jake Solomon said, "It's big," noting that "we're not going to be able to talk about it for a while."

No Caption Provided

The trailer showed a shadowy figure and featured voiceover saying the following: "Hello, Commander. The war continues at great cost. We now believe another force is at work against us. If not dealt with swiftly, it could destroy us. What we are able to tell you…" it went on, before fading out.

At this time, text on-screen appeared that read: "Signal Lost."

The teaser trailer was captured by Kotaku . No information about platforms or release date was provided. If an official version of the teaser trailer is made available, it will be embedded here.

I wish it is a reboot of the Syndicate, but sadly EA, one of the most greediest publishers own the Syndicate IP and 2K Games own Firaxis Games.

If they make another Xcom I will this time be very careful and wait to see if its anything like their current Xcom if so no coins will be given.

I grew up with the original series too. With that said I feel XCOM: EU is a great game. It's a miracle that the game even exists at all on consoles with it's legendary difficuly attack.

Does it have problems? Sure. It's a tad scripted. Babysitting "the volunteer" for the final mission is a pain in the ass, and the Slingshot DLC is linear (it's so short and the rewards are great so I don't mind). It also gets predictable on subsequent playthroughs because by then you know where the aliens are hiding. They still have designated patrol routes on some maps though.

It's probably the XCOM: EU expansion entitled XCOM: EW (enemy within???).

I want aquatic aliens (Terror from the Deep) and alien worshipping cultists.

Probably more X-COM content, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's a new 4x TBS game instead.

The next big project is this really hot girl at my gym. I need help getting her to sleep with me so I hired Firaxis Games to help me out. The status of the project should be released soon.

@Hekteur Yep. Because of the alien attack, civilization failed to colonize Alpha Centauri and so the pink mold stuff is now here to colonize Earth!

Another XCOM? Good news, if true. I honestly didn't think Enemy Unknown would sell well-enough to get a sequel, but I'm glad to see it appears to have been a success.

I'd love to see a remake or sequel to Alpha Centauri. Sadly, if I'm not mistaken, a certain jerk-ass publisher is sitting on that license and letting it rot, so that'll never see the day. "sigh"

I started yesterday XCOM Enemy Unknown and it gave me back my almost lost faith in the video game industry.

Great game, and fresh air from the usual CODish and 3rd Person shooters we have been playing non stop for 6 years now.

@xsonicchaos A crossover? Do you mean to say we'll be able to play as alien civilizations? That would be pretty cool. I think they should make a game called Civilization Galaxy or something like that and allow us to conquer the galaxy! I know there are already games out there like that, but none of them are Firaxis or Civilization quality.

@JLCrogue @xsonicchaos There's already a game that does exactly that, Galactic Civilisations (1 & 2). Great games and for me better than the Civ games.

My expectations are the lowest ever since XCOM EU disappointment. Heavily dumbed down design that cannot be merely addressed with DLC or even an expansion pack. Firaxis unfortunately lost its touch since Civ5.

@Ultramarinus There are plenty of examples of old beloved IP's getting dumbed down or FPS versions that completely miss the point or are just cashing in on nostaligia or the reputable name of a series. But after playing the new XCOM i really think you are being too harsh, and hasty in your judgement. This new version/reboot did so much right, and what it did wrong can easily be improved/added in future versions of the series now that Firaxis has been able to evolve the original with a modern version.

All the things that were left out like base invasions, picking up weapons on the fly in mission and the myriad of other aspects included in the original can be included in future releases now the blueprints have been established for the modern version. I can really see that. So i'm willing to give Firaxis the benefit of the doubt here, especially since they in my opinion did their best to honour the original with a stupendously enjoyable game.

@Banefire76 Not that I agree 100%% with Ultramarinus...as I rather liked the reboot (and I can say it was dumbed down in the same breath) but do you know the meaning of "nostalgia"? Those who miss certain things and aspects of the original X-Com aren't being nostalgic.

"Nostalgia"/"Nostalgic" intones that someone likes something because it reminds them of a fonder time...not because they actually enjoy something.

Some of us like complexity in games. The demand for that never went away.

Longing for giant arcade machines is nostalgic.

Longing for a style of game that went away because someone wanted to wide their market base is not.

@Banefire76 @Ultramarinus No they cannot, they explicitly stated that shooter-like 'inventory' is so that they can force so-called 'choices'. Similar with single base. You'll never pick up weapons, you'll never get alien attack on base.

They tried to honor the game in the alpha builds, they came along the notorious 'focus groups' that made them completely change gameplay and dumb it down so they can market it to the big masses.

I'm neither harsh nor hasty, I hyped the game and made people actually buy it so we could do multiplayer. Result? Nobody cared with multiplayer and everybody including me dropped the game after 1 week because it was dumbed down beyond recognition. There have been way better and deeper spiritual successors around. Money is better spent supporting those companies than Firaxis, who's happy with iOS consumers' money.

@moonlightwolf01 @Nodashi @Ultramarinus @Banefire76 That would only be true if I only kept playing 20 year old games. There are better game designs around in recent years when it comes to this genre but none of them are from big-budget American studios.

XCOM EU is done for the masses and in design shallow and inferior to nearly all games of its genre. Not even 'more playable', you keep wasting time switching stuff around before every single mission, they couldn't even streamline it properly. Multiple team setups, hello?! Those are problems addressed ages ago by other games.

It might be decent for people who don't care about tactics games. For the tactics enthusiast, it's an over-simplistic game, aimed for the lowest common denominator in the market.

@Nodashi @Ultramarinus @Banefire76 Its clear Ultramarinus is one of those annoying gamers who's stuck in a major nostalgia loop in which he mistakes better design for dumbing down. XCOM EU is an excellent game and in some ways better than the original. Being more playable doesn't mean easier it just means it makes sense more often. half the difficulty in older games was often just trying to work out what you were supposed to be doing or what the interface was trying to show you. For a tiny minority that was the fun but for most it was just frustrating. Perhaps he should go and play the old XCOM games again and remember just how much of a pain in the ass they could be. Nostalgia rose tints away all the problem but play for an hour and maybe you'll remember some of them.

@Ultramarinus @Banefire76 I must say, I really liked the game. I don't think the inventory would be relevant (and I doubt soldiers would stop for the groceries) and I ALWAYS felt it's stupid to loose stuff after you clear an area - why the hell would you term NOT sweep and grab everything useful AFTER actual combat?

Attacks to the base would've been interesting, indeed. But the game is good enought without is, imho.

About them ultiplayer, I WOULD play it... if it worked! I have no idea if it's functional now, but I tried a lot of times and only ONCE could play (I play on PC).

Commander + Single lost = X-Com. Civ games mostly start in the bronze age so those terms don't fit for that game.

There is a slim chance it could be alpha centauri 2 , but my money is on another X-com game.

Why? Because intro logos are the same, council person is all the same...
